Wireless won't slow you down unless you are really far away from the router. Wireless G has a theoretical limit of ~54000 kbps, well above your speeds and almost everyone else here.

I figured I'd bring back this old topic because it might be interesting to see whose connections have improved over time. Here's my home connection:

4.77 Mb/s is pretty typical, but this test hit 5.18 Mb/s for me once. One time recently, the result was about 3.8 Mb/s. This compares to 2.92 Mb/s in October 2008.

 

Given that I have 5 Mb/s service, there's reason to be happy with the download results I've been getting. Tech support says that my upload speed should improve if I rearrange my equipment and add a router for my wired stuff (the TV and DirecTV receiver). I currently have 25 feet of phone cord between the wall and the DSL modem. I should have the DSL modem closer to the phone outlet and run an Ethernet cable to the (unpurchased) router, which would be located near the TV and DirecTV receiver.

I got comcast recently, I haven't been very happy with their cable but their internet (and phone) has been pretty good. I never ran the test with the DSL I had up until a few months ago so I'm not sure how it compares to what I used to have. This was tested wirelessly, I don't know how much of a difference, if any, that makes.

 

edit: just tried it again and the difference was kind of large:

I almost feel like breaking out a cat 5 and seeing if it helps me cross the 25 Mb/s threshold. But I won't. Probably.

That's from two years ago. Newer equipment is likely to have Wireless N, which is faster.

 

As long as your connection speed is slower than your wireless capability, your speed should be about the same whether you use a cable or WiFi. I've found very occasional "burps" due to wireless, but that's about it.

I have Charter. I pay over $50 a month for the lowest cable internet speeds. Cable internet is the only service I receive from Charter. I'm going to be dumping DirecTV soon and bundling internet and cable.

This is using my hard-wired ethernet plugged into a power adapter unit from Slingmedia (the slingbox people). Still faster, probably, than my wireless signal, I would guess.

I know very little about computers, so when i look at my results compared to many others on here, i noticed that my upload speed is very low in ratio compared to download speed. Would anyone here have any possible explanations as to why? Is this something i should be trying to get improved?

It's normal for upload speed to be much lower

than download speed. Things are built that way. But as you say, for a 17

Mb/s download speed, 0.3 for uploading seems quite low.

 

Only one other Road Runner connection has been reported since this topic was revived yesterday, so there isn't much of a sample to eyeball. In that case, download and upload speeds were almost equal, which is unusual. But that looks to be a business account, which could have something to do with the upload/download speed ratio.

 

I'd call Time Warner and see what they say.

Cable is famous for very slow upload speeds - it doesn't have the capacity that fiber optic has.
