Whats the rarest baseball thing you've seen in person?

Posted

I've been digging around and looking at a lot of stats and such lately, also pondering that not much was said about Manny Parra's 4 strike out inning despite it being 5 times more rare as a no hitter. I've compiled a short list of things I have seen in person and approx. how rare.

09/14/08 Zambrano No Hitter: 1 of roughly 270 No Hitters

09/28/08 09/25/08 Braun Walk Off Grand Slam: 1 or roughly 170 since 1950

04/04/07 Jeff Suppan 3 pitch Inning: 1 of roughly 170 in MLB history

04/22/06 Brewers 5 HR inning: 1 of 5 times in MLB history

05/20/10 Home plate umpire leaves with concussion: ????

*edit*

06/15/07 (from Vjmastr, I was also there) I saw Brian Shouse pitch three perfect innings to get a save in a

blowout in Minnesota. A LOOGY getting a three inning save has to be

pretty rare. Also in that game, Johnny Estrada actually threw out a

baserunner trying to steal, which was rare in itself.

The ones I was going to say are on here already but I'll list them anyways.

9/28/08 Brauns walk off Slam (best game I have ever been to. Loved those towels)
4/22/06 5 HR Inning. I just remember looking at the people I was with and saying "is this really happening?"

I saw Corey Koskie's concussion.

And I saw Rick Helling strike out the side on 9 pitches in the 1st inning.

I was at that game last year where some dude hit 2 grand slams in one game. Can't remember if it was against the Nats or the Marlins. That's gotta be rare.

I witnessed Randy Johnson's only home run.

I also witnessed the only home run he ever gave up to a pitcher.

all in-person:

Paul Molitor hitting for the cycle AND stealing home in the same game (1991 in MN vs. Tapani)

Ryne Sandberg hitting for the cycle at Wrigley

Odell Jones' near-perfect game in Cleveland (1988 in Cleveland)

2 Brewers' defensive triple plays (the Home Opener one against the Cubs & the one in the DH against Toronto, game 1 of which was Woodard out-dueling Clemens in his ML debut; wasn't Cirillo &/or Vina in on both?)

Gorman Thomas' last Brewer game prior to '83 trade

Tom Brunansky's last Twins game in '88, right after which he was traded to St. Louis (found out over dinner w/ Johnny Goryl, then the Indians' 3B coach -- Snyder & Carter both hit grand slams in Cleveland's win over MN that night)

Baltimore clinching the AL East in Milwaukee on a very cold Sunday in 1983

Bronswell Patrick's & Scott Karl's HRs at County Stadium

Dave Valle's three-2B game in his Brewers debut (I think that's right)

a Brewers win in St. Louis - really! - close game through 5 or 6, then tons of runs for both w/ Darren Jackson's grand slam ultimately helping make the difference

1992-05-15 - Franklin Stubbs Walk Off Grand Slam

2007-04-07 - A-Rod Walk Off Grand Slam

2008-09-28 - Ryan Braun Walk Off Grand Slam

1996-05-29 - John Smoltz - 13ks (might not be hugely rare I guess, but as a big Smoltz fan it was a great game)

Those are the ones that jump to mind at the moment. I'll have to reflect on if there were others worth mentioning.

I think it was Memorial Day '94 or '95. I caught a foul ball off the bat of Joe Oliver in a game in which--I believe--Scott Erickson broke Kevin Seitzer's jaw with a pitch. It may have been Kevin Tapani, but I think it was Erickson.

Last season when Gallardo homered and the Brewers won 1-0 against the Pirates comes to mind - I don't think the pitcher accounting for the only run has happened too many times.

I feel like I've seen 4 Strikeouts in an inning a couple of times. And I also think I saw Ben Sheets 3 strikeouts on 9 pitches. Definitely was at the 18 strikeout game.

8/29/2002 - Mark Bellhorn becomes first NL player to homer from both sides of the plate in same inning. (done only one other time, by Carlos Baerga in 1993)

I also saw Greg Maddux' 299th and 301st win, so on average I saw his 300th.

I saw a tie at an all star game.
"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

I saw the Brewers turn a triple play last year. Forgot when that game was but it was also the Fielder walk off explosion game.

I saw both of those as well. And possibly saw Hoffman's last save at Miller Park on April 7th.

Game 7, 1991 World Series

made sure to get caught in the horn-honking celebratory traffic jam afterward -- just so I could say I did

("ecumenical" side note: I attended a 1st round playoff game in about 1991 when the North Stars & Blackhawks combined for over 200 penalty minutes. There was more time in the fracases than playing hockey at least one of the periods.)

a guy on my softball team hit a grand slam in his first AB and followed with 3-run HR and 2-run HRs. he came up again with no one on and just missed the solo HR. leaving him only the solo short of the HR cycle.
