DVD Purge:

Civil War - Really like this one...  Happy they didn't politically lecture us in either direction.  Keeper

Cruella - Out of character for my tastes, but I love this movie!  Keeper

Dan in Real Life - Decent Rom Com, but just decent, not keeper worthy.  Goner

Dark Half - Decent Stephen King adaptation, but no need to see it again.  Goner

Dark Shadows - Boring and bad.  Had never seen this one before, still had the plastic wrapping on it.  Goner

Men in Black - meh.  Goner

Men in Black II - Hard to even sit through.  Goner

Have seen three duds recently: Anaconda, Avatar and Marty Supreme. Might have to take a little break from movies until something worth seeing comes out.

I've had a hard time finding anything that I'm interested in seeing in the theaters recently.

I got a free ticket through my Fandango account to Dracula next week.  I doubt I would have gone to see it if it wasn't free.

Also plan to see "Send Help" sometime soon.  Getting really good reviews, and looks pretty good.

I finally caught Sinners on HBO.  I respect when filmmakers bend genres and take risks, and this certainly fits both of those bills. I wish I had seen it in the theaters. Some of the shots would have really been neat to see on the big screen.  I thought it was too dialogue-heavy, which is my big complaint about a lot of movies these days (Matt Damon lifting the veil on a potential reason why), and had kind of a choppy edit. I enjoyed the music and the visuals and the themes but I don't think this movie was any kind of game-changer or anything.

Speaking of Matt Damon, I watched "The Rip" this weekend on Netflix.  It was pretty good and kept you thinking.  The last quarter of the movie was as expected.

I caught Train Dreams on Netflix last night and loved it. It's about a guy living his life in rural Idaho right around World War I and all the joy, struggles, and heartache that entails. It reminded me of A River Runs Through It.  It's certainly not for everyone as it's not plot-driven and there isn't a ton of action but the cinematography is gorgeous and Joel Edgerton is fantastic.

DVD Purge:

The Curious Case of Benamin Button - I remember seeing this back in the day and not really liking it that much...  After watching again, I have changed my mind, thought it was kind of fascinating at times, even though there are a few holes in the plot, I can overlook them - Keeper

^^^The last C movie! ^^^

Days of Thunder - Always really liked this one, and I'm not a fan of Nascar - Keeper

Deadfall - Thought this was pretty good. - Keeper

Dead Poets Society - I've always thought that Robin Williams' work when he wasn't a zany weirdo, was far better than his over the top comedic stuff.  This is just a good movie. - Keeper

The Dead Zone - Though I'm usually not a fan of Stephen King movies, probably because I have always read the books before the movies come out, this one I've always liked! - Keeper

The Dilemma - I enjoyed this one, and really had no memory of watching it previously.  Kept my interest and worth seeing again imo - Keeper

Girl on the Train - Meh.  Sometimes pretty confusing, I'm sure the book does a better job.  Nothing I need to see again. Goner

DVD Purge

The Day After Tomorrow - I like this one.  Keeper

Dazed and Confused - One of my top 3 movies of all freakin' time!  I have seen this movie countless times and never get tired of it.  Just an absolute classic!  KEEPER

Death Race - Decent flick, not that I need to see it again.  Loosely based on the cult classic Death Race 2000.  Goner

Death Race 2 - Actually serves as the prequal to Death Race.  Again, I thought it was fine, but not keeper worthy.  I do not own, nor have I seen Death Race 3.  Goner

Death Race 2000 - Absolute classic!  If you haven't seen this one, give it a go, but consider when it was made (1975) before passing judgement.  Yes, special effects are lacking and it can come off as cheesy at times, but that is part of the charm! Definite Keeper!!

Deceived - This was ok, but just feels like it's missing something...  Goner

Deception - Also an ok movie which was enjoyable to watch, but I don't need it in the collection.  Goner

The Departed - This is a good one.  Starts off a little slow, but a really good movie with a bonkers ending!  Keeper

I'm not sure if this fits the thread as it isn't being shown I guess the term would be 'commercially', but last night we attended a showing of "A Road at Night", a documentary detailing the automobile accident that left University of Wisconsin assistant basketball coach Howard Moore severely disabled and took the lives of his wife & daughter. It's being shown through February 19th in Madison with all the proceeds benefitting Coach Moore's ongoing care. The hope is to eventually get the movie shown somewhere in the Milwaukee and/or Chicago areas (Coach is a Chicago native) & someday get picked up by a streaming service.

To say the movie is extremely powerful is an understatement. I would greatly recommend it to anyone in the Madison area over the next four days. If not, hopefully it can reach a wider audience very soon.

Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die

This movie started out great!  I couldn't wait to see how it ended!  Loved the message it was sending (especially as a retired high school teacher)

Then, all of a sudden, about 2/3 of the way through, it became nonsense, garbage, and I totally lost interest.

I had high hopes for this one after reading reviews, only to be majorly disappointed in the end.

Saw the Elvis documentary EPiC at IMAX in Madison and really enjoyed it. Liked how Elvis was narrating the whole movie with his comments, great job with the editing. Hard to describe but sometimes felt like a real concert and had to remind myself this was footage from 50+ years ago. Not a straight concert, goes back and forth to the concert, rehearsing, backstage, news conferences and other interactions with various people. Elvis died before I was born but always had the image of Fat Elvis in my mind but this takes place in the early 70s when he was still a great performer and had the look. Would recommend seeing at an IMAX if you have a chance but going to a more mass audience a week from now.

I caught F1 over the weekend. Seeing as it was a Jerry Bruckheimer flick, I was expecting formulaic fun and it didn't disappoint. Great action sequences, Brad Pitt being the coolest guy on the planet, and a contrived love story that didn't need to be there. All in all I enjoyed it.

It's a good movie, basically Top Gun in a racecar. I'm not sure how it pulled off a nomination for best picture but the racing action is legitimately fantastic and excellently filmed. You don't need to be a fan of racing to feel it.

The one thing I didn't love was the announcing aspect. I get that the filmmakers needed a way to explain the action to those that don't have any knowledge of racing but to put an echo effect on the announcers voices like it was coming over the PA system at the track was corny and brought me out of being fully immersed into the movie. I got used to it but it was a poor choice IMO. I'd rather have seen one or two quick cuts to a broadcast booth to get the point across that it was a broadcast for TV or something so they could avoid the echo effect. I can see the pros and cons of doing that too but it really annoyed me. Overall a small annoyance though.

The Bride

Not sure why this is getting such negative press to be honest.  I really enjoyed it.  Not my favorite movie or anything like that, but I thought it was interesting, strange, and different.

Jessie Buckley was crazy good in this one!  Not sure they could have cast that role any better!

Definitely worth seeing imo.

Saw Project Hail Mary today too.

AWESOME movie!  Just awesome!

I will say this, if you are waiting to see this movie via streaming, don't do it!  This is a theater movie if ever there was one!

Great movie!!!

Nobody 2 was exactly what I thought it would be and that was good. I liked the hints towards the Dells too.

Agree, there's one scene in particular that really must be seen on a big screen, but certainly all the space scenes benefit.

It's basically a mashup of The Martian and Interstellar (in the best way).

Just as everyone has said, Project Hail Mary is good

NASA driving by the moon comes at a great time to sustain some box office succes for it, too!
