Subpar, pretty bad, below average, whatever semantics you want to use - he's not an asset as a defender. He probably makes the team worse in that capacity.

 

His offensive profile worries me a bit as he's at a career low for BB%, a career high for K%, and a career high for BABIP. His XBH/H% is down and his K/BB ratio is more than double what it was last year. All of those things in relation to what is likely an unsustainably high BABIP would make him (for me) a likely candidate for some in-season regression. ZiPS and Steamer have him at 0.4 and 0.3 WAR for the remainder of the season, and it wouldn't shock me if that's how he ended up. Because of that, I'm also dubious that he's a 1.9 WAR player in 2019 and 2020.

 

I think I also just talked myself out of giving up Santana for him.

I believe all of this still applies. Pass if I have to give up anything of value, and I'm not even sure I'd even claim him.

I still like Forsythe better than Dietrich as a second base option. Forsythe was bad at the plate in 2018 and is only an average defensive player. But I like his chances of bouncing back to be something like a .335 OBP/.740 OPS player next year. That would make him a much better option with the bat than Perez. And even with average defense, he'd be much better in the field than Dietrich. If the cost on Forsythe is 2 million or less for 1 season, he's my pick to be the 2B bridge to Hiura.

 

And on Hiura, after the Brewers play the "years of control" game with him, it's very likely they will then play the "super two" game with him. Even if he breaks out like gangbusters to start 2019, I think the earliest we see him in a Brewer uniform would be late May.

What are there, maybe 2 people on this site suggesting Hiura should be the OD 2nd baseman? Darn near everyone is saying he'll be up after the Super 2 passes and Stearns says nothing here to make anyone believe otherwise. You're the one suggesting another full year in the minors because he might not be ready - which is preposterous, btw. Stearns knows Hiura could hit .400 in Spring Training so he has to get ahead of the fan cries now, simple as that. He said something similar a month or two ago. This is not breaking news. There is no mystery here. They'll bring him up once they've secured another year of control. At the same time they're not going to deprive a playoff contender from one of the organization's best bats for another full season.

I don't know about that. The way Stearns answered the question makes me think that Hiura could hit .800 in Spring Training and save a load of kids from a burning bus and he'll still start the year at San Antonio.

Your first sentence is true, but you could have substituted innings pitched in 2018 for plate appearances in 2019 and been talking about Corbin Burnes this time last year. There's a level of expectation for Hiura to perform well enough at AAA to factor in the big leagues at some point in 2019. His performance in the AFL only solidifies it. Someone like Dietrich would have to come along and perform at a high level from the get go and that might delay things, but even if it does, I think by August we'd see Hiura getting significant playing time. Dietrich threatens Thames spot on the roster more than anything so he could be moved off 2nd to make room for Hiura.

Derek Dietrich has reportedly cleared waivers. He is now a free agent.

With not having to compensate Miami, he is worth an offer of two years at around $4 per year. A goo utility player that can start at 2b until KH is ready.
