Jimmy Nelson update from On Deck

Important bits (to me):

 

Nelson said this about his aims for this season: "Not just opening-day roster. One of my goals is to start opening day."

 

The article also talks about how Nelson has been throwing fastballs and changeups for "7-8 weeks".

 

Of course, the big question is can he get back to where he was, even if he's able to meet that goal.

While I think that he's being a little optimistic, at least this is coming from him and not just "reports". Healthwise, at least, it sounds like he's not far off.

This is excellent news-I still think we'll make a move for a lefty, but positive reports on Nelson aside from hopes and dreams haven't happened until now.

I hope he is good/healthy enough to make the 25-man on Opening Day. It would be a nice problem for the Brewers to have.

 

That said, if he isn't 100% by opening day, the Brewers should be willing to send him to San Antonio to get back to form. He has the option(s), the Brewers should use them.

Only if he is injured and on the DL.

A number of others have made the point that it wouldn't at all be a stretch to say he isn't 100% ready to go from his shoulder injury, and he could still go on the DL for that. Given what teams are putting guys on the DL for these days, I doubt the Brewers would have any issue doing that if he wasn't 100% ready. I'm expecting Jimmy to be ready to go, work ethic second to none...if it's possible to come back from this injury, he'll do it.

The biggest thing I take out of this is that Jimmy Nelson is going to go into spring training to prepare as a starter. However that also tells me he is probably not likely to start the year on the opening day roster and instead the DL. That going off the fact they said he will be eased in slower than everyone else. That is my prediction with 70% confidence in it, no insider information.

It will have been 18 months since his surgery by opening day. They've said since the season ended that he was ready for normal offseason work I don't think it's overly optimistic to expect him to be able to pitch on opening day. I'm doubt that he'd be publicly talking about being the opening day starter if he wasn't throwing like he was over the winters before the injury. The question will be if he can ramp it up for the season. Nobody throws mid 90's stuff in January workouts. It's a process.

If he does make the opening day roster(or really whenever he starts pitching in the rotation), I would anticipate the Brewers treating him like a young arm on an innings limit. Skip him in the rotation more often than the other guys to give him extended rest and limit the shoulder a bit. Having Nelson in the rotation definitely makes it tougher to carry 2 of the younger arms in the rotation as you want at least a couple guys that can definitely take the ball every 5th day and allow for a younger arm and/or Nelson in this case to be skipped every so often.

That was just ridiculous speculation. Looking at past news reports, he was reported as being 'on schedule' in May 2018 which basically meant 2019 unless there was some sort of miracle. Then progress plateaued in the summer and he was officially declared out in August.

 

After such a long rehab his comments are the best you can hope for. Nobody is going to expect him to be a #1 starter this year but I admire his confidence.

I'm pretty sure I remember reading that Nelson pitched in fall instructs. I suspect that if the Brewers were 10 games under 500 in September, he might have pitched. You can't throw such an unknown into a playoff race though, especially if it might be safer to simply wait until next year.

I know the news has been slow on all fronts, but I think we're reading way too much into the comments Stearns made, and now Nelson.

 

All of these comments are so general, and really no new information. Not surprising Nelson has ambitious goals, he's a competitor. And anyone who has been through rehab of any kind knows that goals are important.

 

But all we know is he is throwing and that he'll participate in ST. At what level? When will he be ready to pitch in a MLB game? Nobody knows, including Nelson. This isn't coming back from TJ, he may never be an effective pitcher again. I want to keep reminding people of that, because it is possible. Don't get me wrong, if you want to be optimistic nothing wrong with that. It's just that I look at it this way, no sense in trying to predict anything- I'll just be pleasantly surprised if he can help in any way this year.

He very well could get into the rotation early on and then have a few of those arm fatigue DL stints. Which would probably be legit whether trying to limit innings or not.

I think we are lucky for him to perform even average ever again. Rooting for him with everything he's going through, but I've never been optimistic about his return.

Even if it is just a little soreness this is bad...very bad. Coming off a injury, he has had months upon months to rehab, and he still has soreness? That usually is a recipe for disaster...just not good.

This just isn’t true. Soreness is one thing. Pain is another. These muscles are being retrained. There will be bumps.

I would be much more concerned if this soreness was from his shoulder.
