I don't know about that. His bullpen management leaves a lot to be desired and he certainly can't blame talent or resources for this. If I'm a Cub fan I'd have to be a little disappointed with his tenure.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Pirates have fired manager Clint Hurdle.

 

There was a report on Wednesday that the Pirates were going to retain Hurdle for the 2020 season, but it was never confirmed by the club and has now proven to be false. Hurdle, who won't manage Sunday's regular-season finale against the Reds, finishes with a 735-720 record in his nine years as skipper in Pittsburgh. The team is 69-92 with one game left to play in 2019.

If Phillies drop Kapler that seems like a good bet. They are almost playoff ready and will compete for a few more years. I doubt he goes to a rebuilding spot.

The funny thing is outside of the Cubs, SD and Philly are the other two teams that have made some very questionable and expensive FA signings lately. I want to cheer for Joe so I hope he takes the SD job, would be lower pressure and the ceiling seems as high as Philly.

Given Maddon's PA connections, I would say Philly is the most likely scenario. But whi knows? Lots of Midwestern folks would have a hard time saying no to the good part of SoCal.

With the Farm system SD has and there willingness to spend in FA I would think that would be very attractive to Maddon,kind of like when he came to the Cubs with a loaded farm club.

 

Kind of what I was thinking of well.

 

San Diego also has one of thee most tepid fanbases outside of the Florida teams, so it would be much more akin to TB in an expectations/media sense compared to Chicago.

 

Plus the whole laid back SoCal thing seems to line up with Maddon's vibe.

 

To say nothing of the weather or fish tacos.

I’m not sad to see Joe go. He gave them a huge edge. It’s not his fault he had a team with the oldest rotation in baseball. Not only that, tpbut they were very expensive when factoring Lester, Hamels, Darvish, Quintana, Chatwood (in the pen), etc

Great landing spot for him. Familiar franchise, familiar part of the country, he has already thrived in the AL environment, etc

 

Made too much sense for Trout and friends not to pursue...

Maddon alone certainly isn't pushing them past the Astros and probably not the A's either for the next few years. I'm sure he's better than Ausmus but I really can't see them making the playoffs anytime soon without some serious luck... and pitching.
