I know the he's 23, hurt in offseason, missed camp, good minor league track record stuff is true, but the concern still surfaces when Urias is benched for a Sogard, Peterson, Arcia infield and it's probably the right call.

Look I've been hard on Hiura as anybody but you wait until a week left to sit him?? Now we draw the line in the sand? Let him play it out. At least he can run into one. On the other hand Orlando Arcia's reward for last nights horrible ab is a move up to 6?? This lineup makes you realize this team does not belong in the playoffs even with 8 getting in. It's embarrassing.

It's just a really bad bench. I understand why they threw a lot of darts to try fill the bench and lineup this year but unfortunately they missed the board with almost all of them.

 

I realize Pomeranz was very good for us late last year, but it's too bad Dubon never got more opportunity here. He'd be a great fit, especially being young and cost-controlled.

 

Dubon's .713 OPS this year isn't exactly screaming "missed opportunity". In comparison, Jace Peterson's OPS currently sits at .787. Granted stats far from tell the whole story, especially this year, but Dubon, at least to me, looks like another "dime a dozen" utility guy.

I agree. Still can't figure why Mathias has gotten such a small opportunity. He at least looked the part when he came up.

Holt has been a good player most of his career and we should have given him more of a chance. He has always been better than Peterson and Sogard but Counsell likes the other two for some reason.

Its unbelievable how Narvaez went from being one of the top hitting catchers in baseball to hitting like Jeff Mathis. We also need someone good to work with Hiura who was great last season and still has tremendous talent.

Ok you've made the point that it makes no difference who the hitting coach is. If that is really true just eliminate the position altogether. This is not a talented lineup for the most part but when nearly the entire team is underperforming it might be time for a new voice.

This is a total dart throw, but one thing I’m curious about is whether maybe the Brewers value the fact that Jace Peterson sees a lot of pitches in his at bats? He is currently seeing an average of 4.69 pitches per plate appearance. Among players with 50+ plate appearances only Mitch Garver has a higher Pit/PA at 4.70.

 

Daniel Vogelbach is also near the very top in the league with 4.52 Pit/PA. Among players with a 100+ plate appearances that is tied for second best in baseball (behind only Yoshi Tsutsugo and tied with Shogo Akiyama).

 

Again, I don’t know if there is anything actually to it but I wonder if they are valuing players that work counts in these games down the stretch. It would make some sense against a team like the Reds where you want to try an get to their middle inning relievers.

 

All of that being said, Hiura was actually not bad in this category (which is partially inflated because he was swinging and missing at so many pitches).

Playoffs on the line and we are starting Peterson and Sogard, and for that matter Arcia, who was supposed to be replaced by Urias. What a nightmare of a season, and yet, we still have a chance for the post season.

Hiura has 77 strike outs in 55 games, and his OBP is barely above .300. Besides the homers he has only four other extra base hits (all doubles). What a tale of two seasons from the guy who sprayed the ball all over the park last year, to the guy who can't hit the high fastball yet can't lay off it.

 

They should have given him a break earlier before the season was on the line.

 

Well, they didn't and still don't have any adequate replacements to give him a break with. There's no Jerry Hairston or Felipe Lopez to bring off the bench this year.

 

Don't forget Kotsay... Wish we had him to start a crucial game in CF. UGH! (yes, I realize Hairston and Lopez were actual decent options, but it made me think of the decision that RRR made that ruined everything)
