Nottingham had surgery on his thumb... [Latest: DFA’d by Mariners]

Jacob Nottingham announced on his Instagram account that he underwent surgery on his left thumb.

The operation was to repair the radial collateral ligament. Nottingham dealt with a thumb injury down the stretch of the regular season and the playoffs. He had been optimistic that surgery could be avoided, but obviously he wound up going under the knife. The Brewers expect him to be ready for the start of spring training or shortly after.

I'm sure it was partially a result of that wild card game. I believe it was actually a direct result of catching Corbin Burnes as highlighted in the Marcus Hanel interview with "Freshman Parking Lot" that Mass Haas posted on page 10 (I think) in the 2020 archived media thread. Great listen and awesome insight btw! He specifically mentions Nottingham and that game. I wonder if it's "gamekeepers" thumb or something of the sorts?

Wonder why they waited so long?

I thought the same thing... Why not get it done right after the season?

Surgery is normally looked at as the final option..

If they spent the past 6+ weeks trying other treatments to see if surgery can be avoided, I give them kudos.

First for trying other paths & then getting the surgery soon enough to hopefully have him back without much time missed in 2021..

Why would you not try to avoid surgery? Especially when you can try and avoid it for weeks, still end up getting surgery, and still be ready for spring training.

Had nothing to lose trying to avoid this it.

I agree with trying other things before surgery but so often we see players have surgery late in the offseason and get behind in recovery then wind up missing ST time which leads to missing regular season time which leads to some guys never getting going. It seems like if surgery is the likely outcome do it earlier rather than later to leave room for any setbacks.

There is always a chance, however slim, that surgery could effectively end a player’s career. Not everyone bounces back 100% from any surgery. Players want to avoid surgeries, and heal up naturally, if at all possible.

it's going to boil down to whether or not the brewers carry 13 or 14 pitchers on the 26-man (and also whether or not there's a universal dh), but before kolten wong signed, i thought nottingham had a shot at making the club as a late-inning replacement at catcher or first base as the 26th man.

He hasn’t had much of a hit tool but he’s a big, athletic kid. He’s gotten better receiving and I think he’s still got a shot. This could be a big year for him. The conundrum is he’s a third catcher and out of options. Maybe we use the DL to finesse having three catchers, particularly since he’s still recovering that thumb.

nottingham has had some setbacks. appears destined to open the season on the injured list . . .

Just delays the inevitable. Maile was brought in to replace Nottingham as the third catcher on the 40 man. With the depth at the position, I don't think Brewers would be all that disappointed if Nottingham doesn't clear waivers.

if placed on outright waivers and no team claims him, he will be forced to accept the minor league assignment.

at one point in the past offseason, the club had six catchers on the 40-man. they're now down to four.

Wouldn't surprise me if there is some trade interest in Nottingham. Given the sorry state of catching in MLB, I would imagine some team will be happy to take on a cheap 26-year-old with right-handed pop and solid defense.
