You could make a case for the catcher to have a chance at the ball, but Cobb didn’t have position to validly do so.

Apparently, a fair catch isn’t allowed to be snatched mid-air until it actually hits the ground. That's what MLF was arguing.

The issue is that you still have to be in a clear position to catch the ball. After Cobb bobbled it forward, he wasn’t.
