What's bugging you? ~ 2022 ~

Why is it when I watch other sporting events (World Cup, non-US Soccer events, NFL in Europe, etc.), that I ALWAYS hear the crowd singing the respective country's national anthem.  When there is an event in the US, you rarely hear any fans singing.  When I go to games and sing, I get strange looks.  Yes, I don't sing well, but at least I'm proud of being an American.

Why is this?  Quite honestly, it gets me quite miffed and I think it is an embarrassment.

Depends on the culture of the team.  During Blackhawks games there is the cheering of the national anthem.  I know in Kansas City during Chiefs games they sing.  I am not sure on any baseball teams that have a tradition like this.  Back in the 90’s I definitely remember a lot of people singing along at Brewers games at County Stadium not so much when I went in the early and mid 2000’s.

Nationalism is far lower in Canada and the US compared to the South American and Latin American countries.  Even in Europe nationalism is far higher than it is in the US.  Nationalism is probably at its lowest since before 9/11 in the US.  So the lack of signing of the national anthem by spectators really shouldn’t be surprising.

A) The US is a young country and certainly so when you considered when it was colonized. Maybe it just wasn’t a focal point of a country being created in 1700.

B) I don’t think Nationalism is determined by singing a song. Why don’t we base it on national flag underwear sales, I bet we are the best then.

C) How many of these countries have massive religious values that the song relates to or is a communist/3rd world country that sings it three times a day to not go to jail or be executed behind a dumpster?

People were ready to start a civil war because a guy kneeled during it. Do people have to sing to care about the song? Not trying to create kneeling argument (I don’t care if someone does), but certainly people care about the song then and about their country.

1. There have been differing levels of nationalism in the US and unlike other countries it is usually the highest around a national tragedy.  The US is very different from other countries where nationalism is rather high no matter what.  In the US it is only ever high during a national tragedy 9/11, Pearl Harbor and a few other events.  Otherwise in the US nationalism is tempered at best.  If you go back to the 1800's and even into the early 1900's states normally had higher pride behind them than the country as a whole.  Going back to the civil war there was more state pride than there was national pride.  People get annoyed by Texans but they are one of the few states left that has this huge state pride thing.  This used to be the norm throughout the US.  There was some nationalism but it is nothing compared to the state and local pride.  This is very unique and you don't see it in Europe, Africa or any other country or continent.

2. Obviously singing the national anthem is not what determines nationalism but it is part of the formula that is showing nationalism.  It is basically taking the pride in the country.

3. Unless you are talking about Israel or any of the Muslim countries then no religion doesn't really bring in much nationalism and it is more the religion than it is the state.  Communism and other dictators obviously but I am not sure I would call that nationalism.  Some may be nationalistic in their views but most I believe would just be doing it so they don't get killed.

But don't soccer teams play a lot of games against other countries' soccer teams a lot? I'd think if our major sports teams played against Russia and Germany and Argentina a lot, you'd see a lot more Anthem singing just for the bigger nationalistic feeling of the situation.

I hate fall because it's a tease. It's summer on it's deathbed. Warm days, cold nights, plants dying, and total darkness by 6:00. I hate seeing and hearing leaves on the ground. Every day is a reminder that real summer is over and winter is coming. I hate the slow change and it just depresses the heck out of me.

I'm not fan of winter either but winter is what it is - cold and snow. There's no pretending to be something else.

Stupid fall. Nice day outside, right? So I take my laptop outside on my front porch to do some work. My front porch faces southeast so it gets direct sun for the first half of the day. After about 15 minutes I have to go inside because I'm too hot (I'm wearing shorts and a tshirt) and the sun glare is giving me a headache. I decide to work on my back porch instead (opposite side of the house). That's more comfortable but requires several more layers of clothes.

If you are a Nationalist, or publicly proud to be an American these days, it always leads to being called a Trumper, racist, or some other "ist" in today's over the top political climate.  I believe there are still people out there who are proud to be living in our country, but I also believe there are a lot of people out there who don't want the hassle that follows when they admit it.

MLB provides an international broadcast for many playoff games.

Yesterday  I watched the CLE@NYY with this broadcast which featured Bob Costas and Ron Darling.

It was such a bore..., the game didn't help too and the park sounds were mixed so low they were bearly audiable.

The game started at 10 PM in Italy and i consider a personal achievement I didn't fall asleep.

About 25 years ago UW played a football game at the U of Hawaii. None of the major players in televised sports picked the game up, but one of the stations in the Milwaukee area (don't remember who) picked up the local feed from Honolulu & televised it. Some local play-by-play guy who I assume usually does UH sports, wasn't very well-versed on the Badgers but simply called the game as best as he could w/o marketing himself or working with the color analyst to show everyone how scintillatingly brilliant they both were. And no 4 or 5 person crew song-and-dancing us through halftime.

Thoroughly enjoyable.

I have long wanted for a sports broadcast option with no commentators at all, just the field mics and let that be it.  That would be so incredibly wonderful to me.

MLB.tv used to have this you could change the audio to stadium.  Haven’t checked if that is still an option in awhile.

Hopefully as streaming gets bigger we'll start to be able to select from different options of commentary.

I've always wanted to hear football games from a coordinator's perspective and what strategies are and how they should change. I got to watch a game with a former NFL player once and I was all anxious because I figured he'd note all these things that I wasn't seeing, but instead he spent the whole time questioning the manhood of every defensive back who avoided making a tackle.

If it's still an option, I somehow missed it last year and this year but thank you for letting me know.  I will be searching for it next season!

Don't worry, your appointment won't begin until 4:15 anyway.

It's really easy to get disability. Just tell the doctor you have anxiety or a bad back and boom there ya go. In my state, unless you obviously deserve it, you'll always get denied on your first application but never denied by your final appeal. Disability is the new welfare and the system is pretty broken. Unfortunately it can lead to stuff like that where people who really need stuff like close parking spaces being hugely inconvenienced by people who don't.

This is because states and feds share welfare costs but the feds pay for disability. So states are financially incentivized to push people onto disability. A lot of states that claim they have super low welfare rolls, simply have a ton of people on disability.

Install surround sound, buy stadium chair, and create a stadium candle.

Then microwave some crummy hotdogs, get a crummy bun, and squeeze them as hard as you can. It should be impossible to put ketchup and mustard between the hotdog and that bun. Your beer option should be whatever is accurate to that stadium for that given game.

Dog owners that claim their dogs are service animals when they obviously are not. The legal system needs to fix this.

There is a little terrier that I occasionally see at the dog park I go to. It has a vest that says 'service dog' and it loves to excessively bark at people and other dogs. Will also sometimes jump on people.

There is absolutely no way that dog ever passed an accredited test by any organization that is legitimate. Additionally, no one with a service dog would go and take it to a dog park and have the vest on the dog. Those vests are not simply so other people are aware it is a service dog, it lets the dog know it is working.

Unfortunately, the rules are incredibly broad on what a service dog is....and I am not sure what kind of enforcement there really is if one is found for lying about it.

At least in my very specific neck of the woods, none at all. It came down a couple years ago that we may ask the person if it's a service dog, and if they say yes, we must accept that answer and not ask any more questions. In practice that really just means never asking in the first place. But I've had people insist that because it's a service dog (no it wasn't) that they didn't need to abide by leash laws (yes they do).

Not bad ideas, but I'm not trying to pretend I'm at the game.  I just like the sounds of the game more than I enjoy having commentators jabbering away, telling me what I already see.

I don't envision myself creating a stadium candle anytime soon.

The law is you can ask what the service dog is trained to do. If they say it is a service dog, you have to let them in. However, if the dog bites someone, for example, and it is deemed that the dog is not a service animal, the owner and not the business is liable. The real kicker is people claiming emotional support animals are service animals and they are not protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act. If you ever question these people, they go psycho.

There are times in your life when you remember what happened to a T.  This was one of them.  ?

That didn't sound right to me, because we bought our then new house in '99 & I specifically remember watching it there. It was 2000. I think that was the era when they went out to Vegas or Hawaii every four years or so.

Or your long-term memory is as shot as mine & you first-born is actually four years younger?.
