Nelson Cruz

Sounds like he's close to a deal with an NL team. Wouldn't be the worst DH tonhave.

Not at all. A 30 HR right handed bat would be sweet.

He's 42 - key is how much he has left in the tank.

A one-year deal would likely be all the team should have to commit to the guy.

I just don't see us interested in such a one dimensional player unless he comes cheap.

Cruz 2021 MIN (346 PAs) 141 wRC+

Cruz 2021 TB away (137 PAs) 115 wRC+

Cruz 2021 TB home (101 PAs) 66 wRC+

Nelson was pretty much the same as he ever was before going to the Rays. Sure, his road production with TB was still down, but the Trop is what really killed his line over the last two months.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that the Padres are one of the many teams interested in free agent slugger Nelson Cruz.

Enrique Rojas of ESPN reported earlier Saturday that Cruz's market is accelerating and there are now eight teams interested in the 41-year-old's services. The Padres attempted to trade for Cruz at last season's trade deadline -- before the Rays ultimately acquired him from the Twins -- so it's not surprising to hear that they maintain interest. His powerful right-handed bat would fill a giant hole in the middle of the Padres lineup. Expect him to finalize a deal before the weekend is through.

If there are truly 8 teams involved, sad to say, we are out of luck.

Almost all NL contending type teams are in on great DH Nelson Cruz, including Milwaukee, his first big-league stop 17 years ago. Their pitching is excellent but they could use a bopper just like Cruz.

lJon Heyman of MLB Network reports that the Brewers are one of many teams that's in on the Nelson Cruz sweepstakes.

According to Heyman, almost all of the contending teams in the National League are currently in the mix here. The 41-year-old slugger began his big league career with the Brewers way back in 2005, so signing there could bring his career full circle. Where there's this much smoke, there's usually fire, so it shouldn't be long before we know where Cruz will be stationed in 2022.

To me Cruz makes sense because he adds what we need (power) and at a decent price (probably around $12-14M) and without a long term attachment (one-year deal).

However, with as many teams in on Cruz as people are saying, it might drive up his price.

Yes, there's risk at his age. But no matter who Milwaukee signs, it's going to have some sort of caveat. That's assuming we don't want to spend a ton and give a lot of years on a deal.

With lots of interest, I'm wondering if he ends up with a 2 year deal. $10 million per year, $2 million buyout on year 2 (guarantees him $12m) and a vesting option for year 2 at around 450 at bats.

I'm surprised Stearns would be in on Cruz.  He usually places a high value on versatility.  Cruz as a DH only not only brings in a one-dimensional player, it also limits the versatility of the rest of the offense by not being able to play other hitters at DH very often.

I'm pretty concerned about Cruz, I don't think I'd target him for the dollars he's likely to get. He was entirely pedestrian with Tampa.

I love Nelson Cruz and think he's an amazing dude but from a baseball standpoint, I wouldn't pay him $10m at this point.

According to Stearns, sounds like we might also just have a revolving door for regulars to get a day off in the field, which lines up with his statements about the core of the team already being here...although I certainly would love to be caught off-guard by another Stearns special signing here.

I'm not sure him returning to MIL was ever the most likely scenario, but it seemed cool.  At that price and term, I'm glad we didn't pay it.

Absolutely nuts to be giving multiple seasons to a hitter over 40.  I get it......he's still productive but guys that age fall off a cliff in a heartbeat.  Once they can't catch up to heat or recognize a breaking ball, it's over.  There's no adjustment or anything else that's gonna save them.

1 year with a mutual option according to Ken

That makes more sense than the 2 year deal with a player option as first reported. Probably a deal I would have been willing to do.
