This, to me is infuriating:

https://www.yahoo.com/sports/umpire-missed-whopping-27-calls-210544185.html

While missing that many calls is mind blowing, the part of it that makes me angry the most is that absolutely nothing will happen to him.  He won't be forced to improve.  His job will not be in jeopardy if he doesn't improve. There is no motivation for him to improve.  Just total and complete job security.

It'd be one thing if he was consistently bad, but some outside were strikes...some balls.  It was terrible.

Oh, Twins twitter is burning itself to the ground but reasonable Twins fans realize that the weather was truly abominable for those first six games and the true talent of the team is still very much up in the air.

Baseball really needs to push back Opening Day to mid-April again. Playing early April games in northern climates is just garbage, there's a reason why MLB used to start games some time around tax day. There is literally snow on the ground in Minneapolis right now.

They also need to put teams with outdoor stadiums on the road for at least a week. At least the cold weather cities. You probably don't have to do that with the Dodgers and Padres.

I generally disagree with this philosophy. This is only ok for extremely borderline pitches. Yes I want that pitch where a sliver of the ball is on the line to be called the same way consistently, and I don't really care which direction it is. If it's a clear strike or ball, it has to be correct. That said, I posted this elsewhere but MLB will be testing automated balls and strikes at every MLB stadium for a small number of games this season. It would seem likely this will be implemented in 2023 barring significant failure. So hopefully these issues will be short lived.

I should have been more clear. He was calling some strikes balls and some balls strikes. If you're calling 3 inches off the corner...yes, terrible, but at least both teams know what to expect.

But yes, new tech please.

Bring on the pitch clock!

The average game time for the 50 nine-inning games in the minor leagues was 2:38. Yeah, that’s right, 2:38 — that was the AVERAGE time of game. That was roughly 25 minutes less than the average time of game for the first week of the minor leagues before the clock was put in.

Only eight of those 50 games lasted three hours, while seven were finished in less than 2:20.

I like being at the ballpark for 3 plus hours for the 10 or so times I am able to make it.  I would much prefer 2 hours and 30 minutes when I am at home though.

Astros fans in the 6th inning booing their own player!  Trying to bunt his way on to break up a no-hitter.  Astros down 6-0 and Niko Goodrum is batting against Shohei Ohtani and fans boo'd when he tried to bunt against the shift.

DON'T SHIFT if you dont' want people bunting!!  GOod lord the unwritten rules are so so so so dumb.

He must have stock in the future automated strike zone systems. He probably doubled the stock value by himself.

Another one.  +2.34 runs for St. Louis.  Basically gave them the game.  Automated strike zone can not come soon enough.

Some of those strikes calls are just pathetic, but 1 and 3 are bad and resulted in a lost baserunner and a missed strike out.  Yikes.

For those with the MLB app, is anyone else experiencing this issue?  When you click on a game it asks if you want to start from the beginning or if you want to watch it live. I always choose live, but it still starts at the beginning.  My son says the same thing happens to him.  You can still fast forward to "live", but annoying. If anyone else here is experiencing this, do you know how to fix it?

Edit:  I guess this only happens on Roku devices according to my son.

This isn't MLB news but there's that video going around of a college pitcher spearing a runner after he hit a homerun which is apparently the worse thing in the history of sports ever. While I don't condone the action I don't see how it's any different than a batter charging the mound. I'm also surprised it's taken this long for something like that to happen with the amount of trash talk and general disrespect I've seen creeping in to college baseball. Showing excitement and enthusiasm is one thing and no one should have a problem with that but staring down opponents, pointing at them, yelling obscenities, etc. has no place.

Generally someone charges the mound when the pitcher throws a 90+ mph baseball at them. In this case I doubt the hitter did anything to attempt to physically harm the pitcher

Yes, same issue, on Roku.  Not an issue on my PC.  I haven't found a fix (deleting the app and reinstalling didn't help).  If I find a fix, I'll share.

Exactly.  There's a huge difference.....HUGE difference between someone talking trash and someone throwing at your bean at 90+.

I do not care if the batter said something about his dog, his mom, his sister, his wife..... you can't spear someone on the field.  At the point he made a calculated decision to spear someone over words or because his feelings were hurt, it's assault, and should honestly be treated as such.

We’ve noticed this, too.  And, yes, it seems to be only on our Roku.  Very annoying—especially since it has never done this in the past.

There is a little more to the story https://www.yahoo.com/sports/juco-baseball-suspension-owen-woodward-weatherford-nctc-230146756.html

I don't care what the guy said, and it may have been completely inappropriate, but I don't see how this is ever an appropriate response. What happened to old "Sticks and stones" adage?

The Giants at it again.... scoring in the 9th inning of a 7-1 game and the nationals got mad mad and started yelling at the giants dugout.

clearly no team has ever scored 6 runs in one inning before.....

Kapler said he is going to run scores up since the tie breaker is runs scored or run differential or something. Good for him.

In other news, I hate the new baseballs/balance they are trying to achieve.

Whatever happened to not being a dbag to your opponent? Once again, not condoning what the pitcher did but this is going to happen when you have 18-22 year olds chirping at each other and pretending to be a tough guy and no "adult" does anything to stop it.

"I'm not condoning what happened but... ."

when you add the *but*, you're about to excuse violence for words. there isn't one.

Fine, I'm glad he did what he did. Maybe that will teach those turds a lesson.

I don’t know, it’s always seemed to me bat flips, yelling at the pitcher, staring the opponent down is taunting. Other sports issue penalties for taunting but it’s permitted in baseball.

Trying to hurt an opponent is never appropriate so the response is improper, but If you’re going to taunt an opposing competitors you should be prepared for some sort of response and take it.

A bat flip is like spiking the football after scoring a touchdown?  How is that taunting???
