MLB 2022 Miscellaneous News

I didn't see one for 2022 so just going to start one.

Old man continues yelling at the clouds errr I mean Bernie Sanders has introduced another bill going after the MLB Anti-Trust exemption.

I am not sure the MLBPA is going to be happy with this.  If MLB loses its anti-trust exemption there will be a salary cap instituted which means good bye to the fully guaranteed salaries.  I think both MLB and the MLBPA are going to be fighting against MLB losing its anti-trust exemption.

It's an interesting idea.  When they got their exemption a hundred years ago, it kind of made sense.  Now?  Probably not.

I would be curious to see what comes of this, if anything.  I think that I would be in favor of it, even though it really wouldn't affect me or any other typical or hardcore fan very much.

I was wondering if the other major sports had this issue and discovered Baseball is the only sport that as the exemption.

Baseball America Article

I Googled a little bit to see if I could find something on European soccer regarding Antitrust laws.  I stopped after two pages of UEFA vs. the European Super League.

If requiring baseball to follow the Sherman Act allows for a better competitive balance, then I'm all for it.  However, baseball is a little bit of a different animal with the extensive minor league system.  I just find it weird that the owners the Bucks, in one the smallest markets in the NBA, is willing to incur the fourth largest luxury tax.  Even if there was more of a competitive balance, you still need to have a good GM, scouts, etc.  Stearns / Arnold, Horst and the line of GMs for the Packers have used good philosophies for all of the Wisconsin-based small market teams to be competitive.

I still am mad that Gutekunst traded down an missed on TJ Watt, but that is for the NFL thread ?

Thanks for pointing that out.  To think, I have been mad at Gute for that.  I am guilty of message board slander ?.

Shake it off, at least you had a reasonable complaint. 99% of the message board slander on Gute is usually based on far, far less.

Bernie making life a little difficult for Billionaires always makes me :)  There really is no reason that MLB should continue to have the exemption which means there's likely little chance anything changes.

What may make you question MLB even more is looking at the lowest spending teams in MLB compared to the NBA.  I believe the bottom 3 add up to just above the lowest payroll team in the NBA.  Granted there are the minors that teams pay for but how much is unknown and looking at the living conditions of the players it is not all that much.

Maybe tack on another $10-15m for the minors and now you are looking at the bottom two adding up to the lowest team payroll in the NBA.  The $10-15m to the minors is on the high side of a guess and is probably closer to $4-8m.

Considering how New York created loopholes in their own laws so that TV studios could continue to tape shows in front of audiences back when all this started I can't believe they ever let this actually apply to pro athletes.

I won't even sully this board by posting a link to it but this Homerun Derby X thing is the dumbest thing in a laundry list of dumb things MLB has ever came up with.

Ugg I just the rules and I just feel...

Old.

One member of each team will have an internet content creator and I have not even remotely heard of any of them.

How would you like to be an As fan nowadays? Payroll down to $33 million after trading Manaea.

Fangraphs has it at $50 million. Not that that is much better

Wow, soooooo cheap...

The Pirates payroll is 38 million this year & they're in line for their fourth straight fifth place finish.

I think Bob Nutting is making out much better than whatever fans the Pirates might still have left at this point.

The starting Designated Hitter for the defending Champion Atlanta Braves tonight?

Orlando Arcia

If Arcia was ever our DH this forum would explode against Stearns....unless of course we were the defending champions...

If the Brewers reach the promised land and Bob Uecker is still alive, they should have him as the starting DH for the next opening day.

Even looking through box scores last year I saw some pretty putrid hitting players at DH all over the league. I think the game has changed so much over the last decade or so with so much value placed on young and athletic players that generally speaking the best hitting players on teams are also some of the better defensive options too. Which leaves veterans with league average-ish bats to take the DH spot.
