MLB 2022 Miscellaneous News

This is bigger news then people realize.

The last time CLE (the Doaln's) got a minority owner for the baseball team was 2016.  John Sherman bought into the team for the same % amount of ownership & the same possibility of getting majority ownership.  Soon thereafter there was the completed deadline trade for Andrew Miller, the scuttled deal for Lucroy, an exciting World Series run and the signing of Edwin E after the 2016 season.

Sherman had 1 out in the deal - the chance to buy his hometown KC Royals (& as we know now, that came to pass).

Now with David B onboard, CLE can look at more extensions (I know MKE will be watching for how a Shane Beiber extension would look as it would likely play a bearing on talks for Burnes & Woodruff) and adding salary at the trade deadline.

IF  (& I really mean IF) MKE falls behind in the playoff race and is trailing the WC teams come the All-Star break, a Hader deal to CLE could be the route to go.  CLE has a boatload of talent in the upper minors and another roster crunch coming after the season.  Hader should be able acquire a couple top 100 guys out of the CLE system that could help MKE in 2023 & beyond...

Just putting the possibility out there...

Your thinking is quite mad, you know...

Last night I was bored, watching the Astros vs White Sox game and this JJ Matijevik for Houston got his first career HR.  Naturally they wanted to get the ball for him, from the fan who caught it (which he did give) and they interviewed the fan about what he got and how the negotiations went for that.  What struck me as bizarre was that they shot him down on his first two requests.  First was he wanted a Verlander signed jersey.  They said no way.  Then he wanted a ball signed by Gurriel.  No chance.  He ended up getting some tickets and passes to BP.  I thought what in the world.  They have tons of jerseys and balls and heck Verlander is sitting right there just chilling.  What is so difficult about making that happen? Evidently Houston later in the game realized they were coming across as cheapskates.  Kid eventually got the Verlander signed jersey, an Altuve signed ball and 6 tickets/BP passes.

Good trade.

When you give a special back shouldn't you get something from the player you're giving it to? Imagine making that trade in person.

"Here's your ball back JJ."
"Thanks kid! Here's my autograph."
"Umm, no thanks. Can you get me Verlander's instead?"

It's not a great look for the Astros but I can't blame them for turning down stuff from other players.

Not news but is it time to start treating the Yankees stadium for left handed hitters like Coors?  Check out Rizzo's stat line he was declining in SLG in 2020 and 2021 with his age.  He is now slugging at a .500 clip again.  Is this the Yankee stadium effect?

Bryce Harper just took a pitch to the hand and went down in what looked like excruciating pain.

If he has a broken hand or something similar that could be a major development in the NL playoff race.

The way he was holding his hand a broken thumb would not surprise me.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Fractured left thumb. Phillies are in serious trouble. #5 on this list of NL's most irreplaceable players. Burnes #1.

Shouldn't be more than 6 weeks to heal. Then a couple weeks to get back used to hitting baseballs.

Tough loss for Philly , being in a tight wild card play off race that could really hurt their chances.

I feel like if I caught someone's first HR ball or some cool milestone HR for them (that wasn't worth anything in an auction), I'd just give them the ball, shake their hand, and ask for a picture. If they offered me something, sure I'd take it, but I wouldn't care about negotiating. Some of that probably comes from getting older - what do I need a bat or other crap for?

Phil Nevin is clearly a piece of work but at the end of the day these are two underperforming teams making themselves look bad. Those suspensions are going to hurt any chance the Mariners had of getting back into playoff contention.

It looks like MLB and MLBPA haven’t gotten real far in a decision for an International draft. A decision is due by July 25th.

If this is true, I have to imagine every player represented by Casey close will fire him immediately. It also makes so much more sense why Atlanta made the moves they made. I was so critical of them at the time, but it seems like they made a big final push for Freeman and dude didn't even know the offer happened.

With Emmanuel Clase as closer with years of team control remaining, the Indians are not likely to part with Top 100 prospects to get Josh Hader. They could improve the front end of their bullpen for less cost in talent.

I'm not sure it's clear exactly what happened.  Close and Excel Sports have flatly denied Gottlieb's take, which could likely just be damage control.  It appears that Close is trying to split hairs that the offer wasn't "firm" and wasn't treated the same way as a firm offer would be.  Freddy wanted to stay with the Braves and it, looks like they may have had numbers he would have accepted, but Casey Close didn't clearly represent the situation for whatever reason. The fact that Freeman fired Close and is still not committal on his relationship with Excel Sports indicates a clearly unhappy client that thinks his interests weren't the primary focus of his agent.  Surprise, Surprise.

Some more bad news for the Cardinals with Flaherty being shut down from throwing for 2-3 weeks.

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/07/jack-flaherty-shut-down-from-throwing-for-2-3-weeks.html

That would put Flaherty coming back at the earliest in August assuming no rehab assignment and I think the Cardinals would do a rehab assignment this time before allowing him to come back fully.  So that means the middle of August possibly the beginning of September before the Cardinals could get Flaherty back.  I think the Cardinals are going to have to trade for a starting pitcher otherwise they are going to slip out of the playoffs as their rotation is not strong enough for them to get over losing Flaherty for this long.

I expect the Cardinals to trade for a starting pitcher around the All Star break.

Might be a blessing in disguise for them this year. He clearly wasnt the same guy as before he got shut down the first time. He may have to go the Wainwright route and learn to pitch the the margins a bit more.
