Melvin had a chance to use Hader in the 8th against the meat of their order…….but opted for the conventional route…….and it probably ended their season.

Harper has been just incredible

They're finding out the downside of Hader limiting himself to being solely a 9th inning pitcher.

Grisham bunting with one out in the 9th inning down a run…just what? Padres deserve to lose with the way they played this series.

Glad the Phillies won…..Grisham trying to bunt his way on shows you how much confidence he had up there against Suarez.

Grisham was so good in the WC and NLDS only to go 0-18 with 9 SO in the NLCS.

All in elimination for San Diego.  A not very good 87 win team wins the pennant.  Remain competitive and get as many bits of the apple as possible.  That is all you can do in the Brewers situation to maximize a chance at winning the pennant.

Two good things to come from this series: 1) The chatter about the Grisham/Hader trades will start to quiet (for now) 2) Confirms that all the Brewers have to do to give themselves a shot at a WS in the future is to find a way into the dance each season, i.e., "bites of the apple." Now, no more loser trade deadlines, Stearns.

A team that faltered badly down the stretch and would've missed the playoffs entirely, had we taken advantage. Anyways, we didn't, so good for the Phillies. I hope they win the World Series over the Astros.

And also one that would've missed every other year with their 6th place finish other than the Covid year.  When the series probabilities run 60/40 55/45 35/65 or somewhere in that neighborhood anyone who gets in has a pretty good chance.

We did not make the playoffs obviously but this sort-of-continues a pretty eerie trend - some obvious because we lost in the LCS, but:

1981 Brewers knocked out by WS team

1982 Brewers knocked out by WS champ

2008 Brewers knocked out by WS champ

2011 Brewers knocked out by WS champ

2018 Brewers knocked out WS team

2019 Brewers knocked out by WS champ

2020 Brewers knocked out by WS champ

2021 Brewers knocked out by WS champ

2022 Brewers eliminated in reg. season by at least WS team

2023 Brewers win first WS :)

Only if Mark A. moves the team to Vegas this winter to up the payroll.

I will choose not to think like this, in light of an 87 win team that we should've overtaken making the World Series.

6 out save…Hader? That’s hilarious.

they could have pitched him against the best Nats hitters. It's not that shocking.

He obviously didn’t have much confidence but, in his defense, under the wet conditions, a bunt might not have been the worst move. A little slip going after the ball, or a wild throw triggered by a wet ball (pitchers are infamous for wild throws to bases) could have made the bunt look brilliant. Failing to drag the bunt away from the pitcher made the defensive play and throw much easier.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Came to post this, if I were a betting man, I'd go all in on the Phillies.

The NLCS was payrolls of $237 million vs. $255 million going at it. Not exactly a club that the Brewers can claim to have any hope of joining.

My takeaway is that both of those franchises got bailed out of many, many terrible spending decisions by the expanded playoffs. And perhaps some of those higher-priced players are worth more in the postseason than the 162-game grind.

The Phillies and the Padres were each paying $30+ M for players to play for different teams. The higher payroll allows teams to buy their way out if mistakes, and not necessarily means they can construct a better roster.

While it’s reasonable to discuss whether Hader should have been brought in to face Harper, it was hardly a no brainer.

The Padres were pretty clearly hoping for Suarez and Hader to finish out the game. Bringing Hader in to face Harper would have meant hoping for Hader to get 6 outs without good backup if he got into trouble.

Maybe they were spooked by Hader’s history of surrendering deciding runs in the 8th inning of elimination games, including a home run to an all star left handed hitter in 2021.

The smarter teams are putting in their top bullpen weapons against the top/middle of the opposing lineup regardless of inning. Middle of the order is coming up for Philly in the 8th, that's a no-brainer to pitch Hader in the 8th and use someone else for the bottom of the order in the 9th. The Brewers have been behind the curve on this strategy -- the Mariners probably do it more than anyone else and it has resulted in them being the best in baseball at winning one-run games.
