I surely hope we don’t trade our prospects at the deadline to try & get a bite of the apple

Other way around, at this pace they’ll be taking it down to the studs on a rebuild

If they get to 5 games under .500 it's time to sell sell sell.

This team is in a slump reminiscent of the one they experienced about this time (a tad later) last year.

They look disinterested.

Burnes has been mediocre this year - he was terrible tonight.

I love baseball, but last year (75% of the season) & this year (the last few weeks) is not enjoyable to watch.

Exactly.

Even wins aren't fun to watch. This team is terribly unexciting.

I figured about a week ago, the division was the Cardinals. Nothing that has happened since dampens that feeling. Knowing them, this will be 2006 where an 83 win team goes on to win it all.

Rough 53 years amirite?

There have been several fun seasons … last year & this year are not included in my list of favorites

I’m not a fan of the expanded playoff model because it allows mediocre to bad teams like the 2023 Brewers to “remain in contention” far too long

I’m aware that we are in first place in the NL Central - but this team is as cold as ice & not showing any signs of life or giving me any hope

The problem is they’re not even competitive. When they lose it’s been 3-0, 10-1. At least the bad teams of the late 90s would lose 7-5 and were fun to watch

Is Burnes tipping his pitches?

The Astros are crushing the ball

He looks pedestrian

Probably less tipping pitches and more he just refuses to pitch the ball up in the zone. Hitters can just focus on the lower half of the zone so when Burnes with his shaky command leaks one over the middle of the plate it's just getting crushed. He's already given up more HR this year than he did in his Cy Young winning season and it's not even freaking June yet lol

One of my favorite pastimes in a game like tonite is listening to the announcers flexing their justification & lipstick-on-a-pig muscles. Fortunately BA was in the booth tonite as he's a savant at it. What I learned this evening is that maybe Burnes is feeling the pressure of being a staff ace with all the injuries. That might actually be true but boy, if it is what a bad reason. My favorite was

"He gave up 4 home runs tonight, but they WERE all solo shots"

Breezing through the first two hitters & then back-to-back walks to get to the #5 hitter (who I believe was homerless on the season) was interesting to me. I think it screams lack of confidence for whatever reason. And of course he gets taken deep four times afterward which only fuels it. Even in the 6 shutout innings vs KC, four walks. Just very odd.

Not that it makes a difference in a game like this but the ABs have gotten better. Anderson took the night off offensively & Contreras swinging 3-0 in the fourth was horrible: but you scored two & on another night the same ABs might've gotten you 4 or so. But obviously what was supposed to be the strength of the team, right now isn't.

Right now there is no strength on the team.

There is nothing they do well on a consistent basis. Much like last year.

Williams is the only thing you can hang your hat on right now.

Right now, absolutely. The starting pitching was the basket they put their eggs in, which is smart. When you have 7 or 8 you think you can rely on to various degrees & half of them are missing at the same time, you're in trouble.

I think you can also hang your hat on the defensive performance on most days, provided people are in the spots that maximize their ability. But when the rotation becomes a revolving M.A.S.H. unit & Burnes underperforms it's tough to cover for that.

Burnes has been impacted by the pitch clock, no doubt.

I don't think it's anything to do with the pitch clock. The book is just out on him and he's doing absolutely nothing to adjust.

The guy had a 3.97 ERA post trade deadline last season and his ERA this season is also 3.97, so I don't know how people can blame the pitch clock.
