Murphy and Smith have been clearly the best catchers in the NL thus far, but wanted to give Contreras a little more love than he's getting in our poll so far.

Contreras definitely has a chance if they go with three catchers, though JTR has the edge in name recognition.

Yelich has had a really nice May and June after a slow start. He has the name as well so actually going both him and Williams.

The percentages in this poll are not representative of the actual voting as well because if 7/10 voters believe Williams makes it then more like 70% vs. the 46% in the poll.

Yelich is having a fine season, but he's 15th among NL OF in OPS.  Several guys would have to back out before it would get to him.

He's also 6th in the NL in fWAR this year.

Devin obviously well-deserving. Yelich absolutely robbed though by Castellanos and Gurriel. Yelich has a better fWAR than Matt Olson...

I'm guessing you meant to say Austin Riley not Matt Olson. Olson has a 145 wRC+ and leads the NL in HR. Riley has a 110 wRC+ and isn't even on pace to hit 4 WAR. The fact Riley made it over Candalerio is a joke.

No. Coming into today Yelich had a 2.5 fWAR, whereas Olson was at 2.4.

Not that Olson shouldn't have made it, because he's been amazing. Just that Olson was considered a lock, so it's kind of disturbing how Yelich couldn't get in over Lourdes Gurriel Jr with a better fWAR than Matt Olson.

Wander Franco is the best player on the best team in baseball, 2nd in the AL in WAR behind Ohtani…but not an All Star.

They need to take away fan and player voting privileges.

Multiple AL All-Stars are on the injured list (Judge, Yordis the position guy from Houston & Shane M the pitcher from Tampa) so Franco will get named on as a replacement.

With the multiple replacements they do not need to do 1 for 1 sub by position.

I’m curious what your proposal would be for selecting All Star rosters.

I’ll preface my comments by saying that who gets selected for the All Star Game is very low on my list of things in sports that I care about. With the predominant use of the game’s best closers to pitch much of the game, a game that was already a meaningless exhibition has become a dull exhibition.

Your comments suggest that you would prefer a statistical evaluation to choose players over selecting fan favorites or players selected by their peers. That would seem to have the potential to make the game even less appealing to the public, which might prefer seeing an established star like Mike Trout over some Joe Nobody who happens to have a slightly higher FWAR + over the first 10 weeks of this season.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Let the writers and the Commissioners' office decide together. It should be based on merit, not a popularity or ballot-stuffing contest.

Like I said, I don’t care much what they do, but it is certain that if just writers  and the Commissioner’s office made the selections, there would still be plenty of controversy over who gets selected and who gets “snubbed”.

When they took away the fan vote in 1957 after the Cincinnati ballot stuffing episode (which you may or may not know about) they found interest in the game waning. So, they put a fan voting system in place again in the 70’ s and there has been some form of it ever since.

Take the vote away from fans and have a bunch of writers (who have their own biases) applying various standards to make selections probably wouldn’t make you any happier if a Brewer or some other player that you think is deserving isn’t selected. It’s not like fans are universally satisfied  with writers’ selections on postseason awards.

what is the difference between war and fwar?

WAR is the general term, but two different sites have calculations that slightly differ in it

fWAR is from Fangraphs

bWAR is from Baseball Reference

Too bad for Carroll as he is a heck of a player and from Seattle so must be disappointing for him. Yelich is certainly in the running but would think teammate Ketel Marte gets a serious look as well as Tatis.

True. Wonder if Marte gets Swanson's spot. Hopefully, Tatis is being blackballed by MLB and Yeli gets Carroll's spot.

Corbin Burnes has been added to the All-Star roster. Devin Williams has been replaced by Kimbrel. Devin will attend, but not pitching due to recent workload.

Can we talk about this. How in the world was he back in the next game yesterday…. And hit a walk off today was it? He absolutely looked like he was going to be out for a long time… wow. If he was a Brewer and walked off like that you know he’d be done for the year!
