Makes sense.  Strz come out of nowhere last year, dropped off this year, change of scenery trade for him.

Gives us something (hopefully) useful this year.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

Strzelecki has been decent. Scuffled some this year. But he's kind of a dime-a-dozen type hard throwing, volatile reliever. The Brewers literally gave one of those away yesterday in Jake Cousins.

Overall hard to find a whole lot to argue about here IMO.

Well that is about as fair a compensation package we could have hoped for. Sigh of relief.

Man, it's so odd to see Cousins and Strez scuffle like they've scuffled and now both gone from the organization. I thank (Com)Pete for his service as a Brewer and hope he rediscovers that shutdown form we saw during last year's second half.

If that is all we gave up, I'm fine, don't really see the point, but fine.

If there is another piece that we are giving up (which could be the case, you never know), then I may change my mind.

It is very fair to question whether Cousin's days as a 'hard throwing' reliever are behind him given his arm injuries the past couple years. His velo was routinely down 3mph on average in nearly every outing with Nashville in 2023. It was really sad to watch, honestly. A shell of his best former self.

Look at his numbers from '21 & '22.  Then you'll see the point.  If he can get back to that guy, he's a great addition.

And even if he's the guy he's been this season he's better than Strzelecki.

I share your worry about it being more than that though.

Chafin has been one of the top lefty non-closer relief pitchers in the majors for a long time. It's a pretty major upgrade.

If you say so, but his numbers are inspiring no heavenly chorus.

4.19 ERA over 34.1 innings

1.42 WHIP.

Chafin is a really good get for the Brewers. Like any reliever he could struggle but he is a history of being very good and outside of a couple games has been solid this year. This is a good move with very little cost

He had one outing last week where he gave up 5 runs in 2/3 of inning. Before that, his era was 2.96.

Like I pointed out earlier, he gave up a 5-spot against the Cardinals last Monday. ERA was 2.9 prior to that game. The volitility of pitching in relief.

It is all about walks for Chafin. If he cuts those down he is very good. Just too many this year. 18 in 34 innings

But

49 Ks in 34 innings. Has pitched in high leverage situations with 8 saves this year

That's not a piece of information that increases optimism, but let's hope for the best.

Chris Hook has been effective.

Did this return get confirmed by anyone else? Anyone more reliable I guess? It's weird to only see the return reported by one guy, usually it gets reported by a bunch of people

Rosenthal has it.

Can't believe it.

Edit:  That's not true, MLBTR is just repeating the other guy.

Its one blow-up outing in 43 appearances. You're kinda making mountains out of molehills IMO.

Numbers this season for the two.

Strzelecki - 35.2 IP, 4.54 ERA, 4.05 xERA, -0.40 WPA

Chafin - 34.1 IP, 4.19 ERA, 4.25 xERA, -0.70 WPA

Hopefully we get good Chafin as he hasn't been that great this year.

I mean, one of the best non-closers in baseball the last three seasons...What's not to like about that? There's more to it than surface-level stats.

Here's his #s since 2021: 160.1 innings, 180 Ks, 10.10 K9, 2.69 ERA, 3.04 FIP, 3.0 WAR (20th among qualified relievers and sandwiched between Camilo Doval and Ryan Helsley).

He hasn't been as good this year, but he's still inducing whiffs and strikeouts which is a good sign.

Gotta be more than Strzelecki.

That's a heist if that's it.

It’s 5 years of one guy for 20- 25 games from another

but what has he done lately?

I hope this works out for us, but I refuse to celebrate just because it was a Brewers move that was made,.

I mentioned the need for another reliever weeks ago and was booed here. Given the state of the Brewers offense every single game is going to be 3-2 heading to the 7th. You can't just have 3 guys. Counsell wears guys out as we see with Peguro. I hope they add one more.

Ok, great, so that game doesn't count then?  Neato.
