Maybe disappointing, but you have a series against the Pirates with the three aces going out and a struggling pitching staff where only Oviedo (who pitched last night and won't this series) showing above average straps as a starter in August

Another chance to build some real momentum here

Four-way tie for the final wild card spot.

The Cubs had/have the opportunity to control a lot of the wild card action. They just split a series with the Reds, which didn't amount to much because they blew a late lead in one game. Now they face the Giants, then they face the Diamondbacks.

One of those series where taking 2 of 3 is more than fine for the standings but might still feel disappointing...huge pitching advantages all 3 games.

Eh. Pirates have been playing pretty good baseball lately. Mitch Keller going on Wednesday. I'd be fine with 2/3 regardless. It's tough for me to expect a sweep for any series.

The thing I like is that you now have Burnes-Woodruff-Peralta going in 6 of the next 8 games. Unless we dick around with a 6th starter in the next week, which is always possible.

I hope Yelich is recharged from a couple days off. He's had a nice season, but sometimes goes in these stretches where he can make mediocre/average pitchers look pretty good due to the swing & miss.

Hope Contreras carries this through to the end. Looks really good at the plate. Just missed hitting one out yesterday to put them up late.

I'm so tired of this team playing such good baseball lately and not being rewarded for it. That's what's supposed to happen. Play good baseball and increase your lead.  A week or so ago I was HOPING for a 6-7 game lead with 20 to go, essentially putting the nail in the Cubs coffin. Yet, here they are STILL with only a 3.5 game lead. That's annoying for how well they have been playing.

Rather be us than the Cubs who are playing just as well (including taking a series from us) and haven't really made up any ground.

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave

The giants have hit the wall

They have just totally fallen off a cliff at the plate since the ASB.

Pre ASB - 102 wRC+, 4.6 runs per game

Post ASB - 76 wRC+, 3.6 runs per game

Add them to the list of teams we played while they were hot and the Cubs are playing when they are ice cold.

Just did a piece on him, bad news is I don't think it's fatigue related. His stance has changed and his exit velo, which has always been upper tier, has stopped massively in August. I think it's a simple fix, but we'll see

Counsell must be drunk batting Frelick in the clean up spot, or even playing him at all. Taylor would be a much better choice.

I've been saying this for a while.  Frelick isn't a clean-up hitter, and it's time our manager figures that out.

I'm wondering if hitting him #4 is messing with his mind a bit?

Currently watching Aladdin with my daughter.  Better turn on the Brewers game because listening to Gilbert Gottfried is going to want me to play The Aristocrats joke.

Why not? He hit Owen Miller cleanup for a while....
