I'm wondering if the plan is to platoon Sanchez & Bauers at DH while Yelich stays in LF and one of Frelick or Mitchell goes back to AAA until an injury hits.

Gotta feel like an OF for a pitcher trade is coming. No way they're going to stash multiple of those guys in AAA.

I'd be surprised if Turang makes the Opening Day roster much less is a starter. He needs to hit.

I would do that trade, but I think the Marlins would want Frelick instead, so no to that.

Just hard to imagine any team wanting Mitchell after missing last year and with his injury history.

An 85-90 wRC+ would make Turang a valuable contributor to a championship-type team because of his incredible defense at 2B.

I don’t think that’s out of the realm of possibility, in fact I think it’s probable he improves in the box and gets to that level this season.

I think that is the way to go but the Brewers already stated Yelich is playing LF. Sure he will get some starts at DH but I'll take their word that their plan doesn't include Yelich as the every day DH. Would  think Hoskins/Bauers get plenty of time at DH if they go that route.

It seems weird to sometimes use 2023 numbers and sometimes use projections. Mitchell's projections are much lower than his 2023 numbers. Also Frelick really struggled last year against LHP so I'd rather start Yelich over him if a lefty has to play against LHP.

 

My guess is we'll see Bauers/Sanchez in a DH platoon, Yelich start every day, & Frelick & Wiemer platoon with Mitchell heading to AAA until an injury occurs

I only used 2023 numbers for guys being platooned as there’s no projections available for splits. Otherwise, I went with projections.

I agree Yelich isn’t being platooned but I think he should. Frelick had relatively nice numbers in the minors against LHP.

Frelick has had severe issues with hitting left handed pitching at multiple levels. Mitchell has not.  Not sure why everyone is platooning Mitchell.

Also why would Mitchell be the one starting in the minors, as some have suggested? He had a very nice extended look as a rookie in 2022, then followed it up with a strong start to the season last year before going down with a fluke injury. I know that most are considering Chourio the CF of the present and future, but Mitchell is an absolute stud defensively in CF, and has nothing to prove in the minors at this point.

Mainly because Mitchell seemingly has benefitted from a lot of luck, the Projection systems are very down on him. That said if they wanted to send Frelick to AAA rather than Mitchell it doesn't make a large difference imo

If he would get up to 85, he would be fine. That is a long ways to go from the 60 he was in 2023.

Mitchell / Frelick / Chourio / Wiemer are all just a “ride the hot bat” situation to me. I know Chourio has the contract now but if he could still potentially spend some time at AAA depending on how things go, and Wiemer is probably least likely to hit his way into an every day role, but they are all going to get a shot unless traded.

Except this is not really true...

Frelick vs. LHP (2021): 1.054 OPS, Frelick vs RHP (2021): .840 OPS

Frelick vs. LHP (2022): .865 OPS, Frelick vs RHP (2022): .890 OPS 

Frelick vs. LHP (2023): .612 OPS, Frelick vs LHP (2023): .722 OPS

Mitchell vs. LHP (2021): .732 OPS, Mitchell vs RHP (2021): .817 OPS

Mitchell vs. LHP (2022): .768 OPS, Mitchell vs. RHP (2022): .847 OPS

As you can see, Mitchell is the one with the more dramatic splits in his minor league career. Frelick's career OPS against LHP is north of .800. Mitchell's is well below that. I'm not going to pretend his 9 total MLB ABs against LHP is any sort of meaningful sample size despite the .967 OPS. 

Frelick showed more dramatic splits last year, but it's also important to keep in mind that he was injured for a good chunk of the season. I'd put more money on Frelick being able to hit LHP than Mitchell, especially with Mitchell's unsustainable BABIP and 35%+ K rate.

It's kind of funny to me that that at least one projection system assigns the lowest batting average in the starting lineup to... Rhys Hoskins (and of course I know average doesn't tell the whole story), and 3 of the lowest 4 projected batting averages go to new signings.
