Doug Melvin surely approves this signing.

Of course you would criticize this signing. Sanchez had a 111 wRC+ last year and .342 xwOBA.

My goodness how is signing a backup C (which was absolutely a need) who rakes LHP and can DH against LHP garnering this much negativity?

Maybe? We didn't really give up much.

He's a guy you sign to a minor league deal if at all and we gave up prospects for him. Now its doubtful those prospects pan out but Bauers wasn't worth giving up anything for.

His OBP was below .300 and thats not worth 7 million but there isn't a move that you don't praise so carry on.

Lol. You know that's not true. I criticized the Hader trade when it was made, for example.

And he put up a 2.4 bWAR last year. That's worth more than $7 million. lol

It's the usual suspects. Or should I say suspect.

Just waiting on Jeffrey Leonhard now...

I wouldn't pay 7 million for anyone likely to have an OBP below .300 but since its a one year deal it makes little difference.

Its also the usual suspects as you say that act like every move is unquestionably great.

More gaslighting.

And as I've said, I criticized the Hader trade when it was made just off the top of my head.

Admittedly this isn't super exciting, but he's probably a better option than Haase. As other posters have pointed out, Haase doesn't have any options remaining and he got a $1m big league deal. My guess is they roll out of camp with 3 catchers assuming all 3 are healthy and then put off making that decision as long as possible. Taking it a step further, unless he just absolutely sucks, Bauers probably makes the opening day roster too since he is also out of options and the rest of the 40 man roster guys like Owen Miller and Andruw Monsterio still have at least an option left. Would make for a super clunky roster on opening day to carry 3 catchers, 2 first basemen, and likely 5 outfielders. So probably wouldn't be able to keep Bauers and Haase for long if the team is healthy coming out of spring training.

I'm not upset that they're adding to the options at DH, but it kinda would've been nice to just run out the young guys as much as possible to see what we really have in Frelick, Mitchell, Weimer, and to a lesser extent Perkins. All of those guys have options so they probably don't all make the opening day roster. I do hope Chourio starts from day 1.

I hope this is the year Perkins brings that AAA success to the Bigs.

Contreras played 108 games at catcher last year, which is 9th most in baseball. Number 1 was Realmuto with 130 games. We're looking at 32-54 games at C for Sanchez and another 50 games as a short platoon at DH with Bauers and Yelich. It's 1 year $7 M with an option, which means it's probably $4-5 M in 2024 with a $2-3 M buyout in 2025.

As for Haase, he actually signed a split contract. ($1.5 M in the majors and like $750 k in the minors.) We assumed the competetion for Contreras' backup was between Haase and Nola.

Man, that's 14 million in Junis and Sanchez?  That money could have been spent a lot better in JD Martinez.

Since when do we count everyone's buyout for the next year as part of every player's current-year salary?  So many people are so stuck on Junis at $7M for 2024 only b/c that's how it was first reported, when a little while later Rosenthal reported it as $4M in 2024 + $3M for the 2025 buyout.

I kind of liked the other two backups (and Quero in AAA) more than enough.   Might Contreras be dangled?  Someone had to say this out loud so I guess it’ll be me.

Seriously?  Contreras is an All-Star w/ 4 years of control left.  Sanchez is a crappy hitting part-time C w/ so-so defense & a part-time DH --> close to the same "potential cut" class as Luke Voit proved to be last year vs. any kind of long-term viable starter.

Junis is a mutual option for year 2, those never get picked up so it is 1/7 because he is only playing 1 year in that deal. Sure for the ledger we are paying him over 2 fiscal years but he is only playing 1. Sounds like the Sanchez deal will be the same 1 year of play 7 million.

Sanchez seems to hit lefties pretty well. A Bauers/Sanchez platoon at DH seems like it would be fairly effective. Last years team was severely lacking in the power department and it seems the Brewers have somewhat remedied that with the Hoskins & Sanchez signings. This also would allow the Brewers to send whichever of Frelick or Mitchell is performing worse down to AAA until an injury occurs. Part of the reason the Brewers have been able to play consistent baseball these last few years is having depth and this helps that. They will mix & match based on specific matchups and that's fine.

On one hand, you're right.  However, for 2024 payroll considerations, Junis is getting paid $4M.  Miley had a mutual option last year (that wasn't picked up) but we only ever discussed his 2023 salary in terms of his 2023 salary alone, not salary + buyout.  Apples to apples.

Similarly, unless it's been updated in the last little while, there's been no clarification yet as to whether Sanchez will have a 2024 salary of $7M and have an additional amount for 2025 buyout, vs. if the $7M is the grand total of 2024 salary & 2025 buyout.

Luke Voit was off the proverbial scrap heap. Sanchez is a better player.
