He's still out there. I'm a bit overly sentimental here, but dang it, Woodruf has earned it. There's now a basis for how this should work, with Kershaw's deal giving a base and escalators for appearances this year and next. I don't expect Woody to pitch for the Brewers this year, so it could be a two year deal with $2mm this year, and $3mm next with rising amounts for games started.

He may never get back. But it's worth the investment to help him work towards it, and it's good PR for future potential free agents.

For all of the reasons you mentioned above, I would love to see Mark and Matt work out some type of a deal for Woody - similar to what you outlined above.

They should try to do it. Woody won't get 3+ years anyway and if he's going to take a 2 year deal why not go back to the Brewers for best chance to rehab his case for a big deal 2 years from now. He might take a discount.

I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

If he will take a team-friendly deal, then I'm fine with the risk.  It would have to be as outlined above because shoulders are so tricky.  I can't say I would be comfortable with any deal that exceeds 2 years and $2-3 million/year.

If they are going to sign him, I feel like it will happen in the next couple of days. That way they can immediately place him on the 60 day IL. Allowing them to keep their roster flexibility

Rumor is that Big Woo and Liam are set to sign after Wednesday when players can be put on the 60 day IL.  Heard Liam is possibly going to the baby bears.

Thanks. Good to know.

I can't believe the Dodgers haven't signed him to a 2 year deal yet. That no team with money to burn has done it yet is interesting. Or concerning.

I think the Dodgers already have like 17 injured veteran starters on their payroll...they might have lost track and just assumed they did sign Woody already.

What else have you heard? Pray tell.

I'd be fine with it.  I always thought the 2/25 talk was crazy, but we'll see.  It certainly makes zero sense for us.

2/8 w/escalators for games started, fine.

I kinda think his career is in serious jeopardy though.

I would love to have him back, I would try and put some incentives in and some different options. Something like 2024=3 million + 350k per start, 2025 $20 (turns into a team option with $3 million buyout if he doesn't pitch in 2024)($5 million incentives for starts, innings, top 5 cy young voting). I'd love to put in like a 3 year team option 2026-2028 (3/75 $5 million buyout) but that might be iffy.

How can a contract for a guy with that kind of uncertainty ever be called "team-friendly?"

I feel so bad for the guy. But that doesn't mean that I want the Brewers to sign him.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately.  Normally when there is a shoulder injury, I think it's time to avoid any new contracts and I'm always pessimistic, thinking the pitcher is done.  The problem here is I love Woody and think he's such a bulldog on the mound.  I have been hopeful there is a team friendly deal to be had and he comes back close to where he used to be.  But the chances of that.... not great.

If you look at what the short term deals for elite pitchers in recent years has been like (Bauer, Scherzer, Verlander), then essentially getting a 1 year deal at a big discount to that for a pitcher who (pre injury) was just as good will be worth the risk to teams. If he's back to his old self, you get one season at a discount and a comp pick. Downside is a good chunk of money for nothing, but it's also just 1 year. Many teams will consider it a calculated risk. I don't think the Brewers have the kind of payroll space to go for that though, limits them too much if it doesn't work out.

Then again, the talk above of just a couple million per year isn't very realistic either. He'd have signed a long time ago if that was the case. Unless, maybe, he has a deal in place that's just waiting for the 60 day IL to open up.

I hope the Brewers can find a solution that works for both parties though. Loved having Woody here and I'd want him back if possible.
