I doubt there is anything this team can do that would give them a real chance to beat two of Atl/Phi/LAD which is most likely the road they will have to go through to reach the world series. Last offseason was the time to try and get someone like Flaherty on a one year deal. This team isn't good enough to pillage the farm system for short term gains and with our limited payroll it really is never smart to do that which can really damage the future of the franchise.

Have we not learned from any of the last several postseasons in the NL?

If last year's Arizona team, can knock off Phi and LA....

There should be a bunch of quality upgrades to trade for at SP once late July comes around and the Wild Card picture gets clearer. Even on Florida and Chicago (AL) alone, there are five or six possibles. Starting pitching is the obvious weakness. I am all for someone who can pitch next year here too even if it costs us a bit more prospect wise. We will be having a 40 man crush starting this offseason….no use in standing pat just to put more up for Rule 5. We are in an excellent position to add a SP rental AND a long term SP for the next few seasons.

If the Brewers can get a TOR-type starter (Flaherty?) and another innings-eater type (Fedde?), they'd be in pretty good position imo.

And the cost would not be inordinate if that's the direction they went in. We've got prospect depth to trade from.

I cannot imagine the Brewers looking for another OF who is injury proned and owed almost 60 million dollars like Roberts. They have an abundance of cheaper and healthier options, just an outstanding position for a small market team, and gambling on an injured OF especially seems unneeded.

And I can see Black being here soon too as our left-handed 1B. I can’t see us adding an infielder. If Murphy hits him 3 for multiple games, that tells you  a lot.

Exactly.  Just get in and get hot.

1) Jon Gray for Devin Williams, Hoby Milner, and Jadher Arienamo

The Rangers will get a ton of pitching back Scherzer, DeGrom, Mahle, Lorenzen, Gray, Eovaldi, Dunning, Heaney, Bradford. They pay a big price for badly needed bullpen help.

2) Luis Severino (mets pay most of remaining salary) and Saul Garcia for Joey Weimer.

Stearns knows Weimers potential and needs OF help. Weimer is a lot to pay for 1/2 year of Severino so we get a big arm in Garcia that needs developing.

3)Taylor Clarke for Amed Rosario

Rosario fills the utility IF/OF role better than Monesario and Clarke gives the Ray's a year of extra control.

Peralta, Gray. Severino, Rea, Wilson/CarRod/Tobias

Megill, Hudson, Peguero, Payamps, Koenig, Paredes, 2 of Uribe/Hall/Junis/Wilson/Ross/Misi/Zas/others

Contreras, Hoskins, Brice, Willy, Ortiz, OF Mitchell/Sal/Perk/Chourio DH) Yeli Bench) OF, Sanchez, Rosario, Bauers/Black

League average replacement level RH OF who should cost very little.    Same type of SP, who should cost very little.   Just league avg/replacement level types.

And if they get lucky with Perkins keeping this up and Mitchell/Chourio hitting better over the next 6 weeks might not need the OF.

With the gap between them and LAD/Phi/ATL I wouldn't be giving up any legit prospect capital unless its for several years of control. Which I guess would apply to Robert and those CWS pitchers too.   Otherwise, generally stay the course with Canha/Santana level pick ups for OF and SP. And I suppose a Rosario type I saw above can't hurt for backup IF and to cover if someone gets hurt, again as long as it doesn't cost legit prospects

Until I know what I have with DL Hall, Joe Ross, and Junis, I am going to stand pat.  No need to panic with the way our current starters are pitching.

Yeah, those three plus Ashby, Taylor Clarke and I’d even throw Chad Patrick in there gives them like a half dozen in house rotation depth options to choose among twixt now and the deadline so I don’t see them paying a prospect premium to go out and get somebody before then.

The only scenario I could see pushing them to a more aggressive posture would be something happening to Freddy (please, nothing happen to Freddy).

I wonder if the Giants would trade for Frelick.  Maybe something like Birdsong (LHP) for Frelick could work.  Wouldn't be someone who could help this year but next year could be possible for Birdsong.

One of these teams is not like the others.

I think we're lumping ATL in out of habit, but they're not the juggernaut that Phi is. They should be talking about how they're going to get past LAD/Phi/Mil

Yes that's fair, missing their best hitter and pitcher they're not what they were.  And of course they're not performing right now while dealing with other injuries too.  But their roster is still top notch, would be very surprising if they don't get humming by end of year.

And with all those issues, we're still only a few games ahead of them.  We have all our injuries too but they have a lot of positive regression to the mean coming from guys.  We're currently seeing the negative regression on guys like Contreras/Yeli.

Contreras was not going to keep that pace up all season, add that to the fact that he was over used.

From this point on, he needs rest, simple as that.  Maybe less than most catchers, but he better not be playing the next 70+ games again.
