How many of the 21 2023 draft picks signed? How many of the 16 pitchers signed?

18 of 21 draft picks signed last year. Jacob Gholston (#17), Dylan Watts (#18), and Isaac Morton (#19) didn't sign.

Thank you. I wonder how well those three players did in college this year.

Gholston only threw 0.1 innings for Oklahoma and has a 6.51 ERA in the Appalachian League in 27.2 innings.

Watts had a 7.12 ERA for Auburn in 30.1 IP.

Morton had a 2.87 ERA for Texas A&M in 15.2 IP (tons of walks though) and a 2.25 ERA in 4 innings in the Cape Cod League

Glad none of them signed 😏

113 high schoolers were drafted in this draft. Brewers drafted 12 (10.6%). How many of the 12 do the Brewers sign?

If the same percentages as 2022 and 2021 hold, roughly 85 will sign total. So if the Brewers even sign 8 they will be over 9%.

Wowza!!

10%of all HS draftees to one team

This is a Stearnsian / Arnoldisn zig when the league zags.

( see; signing FAs in 2019 when teams weren’t; building around pitching and defense when others were all in on offense/HR/OPS 2021-2023; drafting JuCo in 2019-2023 when others rarely scouted it)

I just realized: No Juco pitchers. We see players who have played Juco. BUT, nobody from the Juco ranks. Interesting. Which always goes to show you: a trend is a trend until it isn't. What this says to me more than anything is the Brewers are simply good at what they do and they can't really be placed into a given box whatseover.

Yeah they decided to jump the gun and signs guys BEFORE they could be college or JuCo pitchers (lol)

The draft this year was sponsored by the letter "P", and also by the letters "HS"

With the Brewers having a somewhat non-typical draft for them, does this simply mean they 'follow their board'?  Obviously it isn't that simple with the financial juggling that many teams do on the draft days.

This draft was pretty similar to last year. Heavy pitcher and heavy high school.

Or is this the new normal? The high schooler in the first round is new, but a lot of the other things are similar to last year. Taking a large number of high schoolers? Check. Shunning college bats after round five? Check. Ton of pitching taken on day 2 and day 3? Check. No Pratt or Bitonti, but I am not sure that player existed this year.

If only they were drafted by a team who has one of the top pitching labs & programs for developing arms…. Oh wait. Choice to go to school not looking great.

With only 20 rounds now, think it is tougher to bet on yourself & go to college. The end goal is always to play pro ball & odds are tougher to do so. Big reason only 15% are walking away from a contract. Curious what percent of them are redrafted. Clearly two sided coin considering one of our hs flyers just made much of money after going #12 this year.

In the latter half of this video clip, VP of Domestic Scouting Tod Johnson discusses whether 13th round LHP Joey Broughton will choose to complete his rehab with the Brewers or go on to college. Broughton did not pitch in his senior high school season.

From this article, linked in full here, which actually references Brewer Fanatic:

"Although he didn’t throw a single pitch during Northville’s first-ever state championship season that ended in dramatic fashion in mid-June, left-handed flame-thrower Joey Broughton showed enough stuff during his first three seasons — and during high-level summer competition — to draw the attention of the Milwaukee Brewers.

Broughton was selected by Milwaukee in the 13th round with the 395th pick in this week’s MLB Draft. An arm injury prevented the 6-foot-2, 197-pound standout from stepping on the mound this spring, but when he did return for the final third of the 2024, Broughton was one of the Mustangs’ best hitters.

NOTE: Curt Hogg of the J-S indicates it was an elbow injury within his coverage.

Arguably, Broughton’s biggest hit was a two-run home run that broke a scoreless tie against Novi in a Division 1 district championship game on June 1.

“This feels awesome because I’ve worked super hard to be able to get back on the field and to contribute, even though it’s not pitching,” Broughton said following the Mustangs’ 3-1 triumph. “A lot of hard work paid off and I’m so happy to be back.”

Broughton joined teammate Dante’ Nori as Mustang draftees — a rare feat for any high school, let alone a public school that draws its players from within its district’s borders."

Brewers select Manitowoc pitcher in 19th round of MLB draft
Noah Wech, who just graduated from Manitowoc Lincoln and is slated to play college baseball at Oklahoma State, now has the option to join his home-state organization

Within:

"Wech told NBC 26 Tuesday evening that he has not yet decided whether he will join the Brewers organization or continue with his plan to play college baseball."

So other than Pratt, Wilken, Boeve and Bitonti  every other pick but 1 were pitchers? lol That’s amazing…….

The 1 other is Josh Adamczewski, a SS with 898 OPS in rookie ball. What an amazing 5.

Especially if I am a pitcher, I would find it hard to pass up a solid 6+ figure offer from the Brewers. Get premier development. A chance to get to MLB faster and the low minors salaries aren't as terrible anymore. And probably better care in case of an injury.

In terms of draft strategy I expect that their pattern will again shift in a few years as industry patterns change. About the only constant has been liking up the middle prospects for awhile now.

The zig/zag comment may be the most accurate...as the rest of the league is selecting less and less high school kids, the Brewers have headed in the other direction the last two years.

I think it’s safe to say Adamczewski is not a SS at this point but a 2B. 2B is the only position he’s played since he was drafted.

Tod wants to be where others are not. Take advantage of the value others are overlooking.

Is the league selecting fewer high school kids in general or just this year in what was seen as a weak prep class, especially among hitters? Last year had the highest number of preps picked of the 20-round era and comparing it to years with 40 or 50 is really difficult because of the nature of the MLB draft.

Yeah a bit lower of a rate, but there were only 10 fewer HS drafted this year compared to last year so it wasn't like a huge gap.

That is where I grew up and went to high school.  I hope he signs, I would have a new favorite minor leaguer.
