Brewers (Hall) vs Diamondbacks (Gallen): 9/15/24, 3:10pm

Posted

After we shut them down for a game-and-a-half, this team showed just how good they can be at scoring runs. The rough thing today was we absolutely gave them one in the 8th, and Hall basically gave them three to make it 5-0. Not characteristic. Then Turang is walked to get to Chourio, in the same game in which Turang reaches base five times but has two misplays in the INF (even though it wasn't an easy play, the ball Carroll hit was a play Turang can make & quite probably would've been a DP). Even then, he saves us with the backup on the bad throw.

Without hearing the presser, I'm guessing Williams sat down when it became a 2-run lead. Given where we are, if that's the case I get it. Still, with the first-round bye crap in play it can be criticized. But no one's a moron, or doesn't know what they're doing, etc.

---Just heard Murphy. They wanted to protect him due to the workload, 13-game stretch, etc & would've used him if they got to 2 outs in the inning & needed him to lock it down. Koenig DID throw the ball well in the 9th & there were lefties coming up, so I get it but it can be questioned & I'm sure it will be here.

Weirdest game of the year. Walking Turang....inexcusable. Then Murph says "hold my beer."

Only explanation (non-injury) is that he saw all the lefties coming for AZ and then overthought it. And by the time Carroll hit, it was 10-9, bases loaded, nobody out, and you're looking at a game where Devin is lucky to get to the 11th even if he comes in. At which point, you just hold fire and hope.

Bad call. You're trying to win every game, you go with your best. Learn from it, Pat. Move on, and let's pop some champagne at home this week.

It's just totally moronic. If you're worried about Devin staying fresh then he should have been totally unavailable. Warming him up multiple times for a potential 1-2 out situation is one of the dumbest things I've ever seen.

They have the most feared lineup in my view in the NL and that includes the Phillies dodgers and braves.

Silly.  I stick with hard and fast: he either gets up and enters, or he is unavailable.

Brutal. Then why did he get up twice? Just a crazy decision that is indefensible.

Then that would've been the first time he'd done that this season. He's always let it be known that it's that pitcher's inning and his alone.

Coming into the presser, I was with everyone here, and I probably remain so. But I thought Murphy's logic was sound. He was trying to get Koenig to to get to 2 (or 3) outs with two lefties sandwiches Marte, and then bring in Devin to face Christian Walker with two down. It didn't work, but the logic made some sense.

Edit to emphasize that I still disagree with the decision.

He also said it was a “consensus decision “ among the pitching group……I assume that is Hook and Henderson.

The other thought is with two lefties Murphy wanted to get by using Koenig and save Williams but it was clear he didn’t have it at all

Lefties coming up was a big part of it as per the presser. Koenig IMO "had it" in the 9th. In the 10th there were no other viable options if they wanted to stay away from DW.

Ashby getting through his last inning would've made Payamps available, but that didn't happen. Also Hall only going three factored in. All this stuff is inter-related.

We would be undefeated if only a committee of posters from this forum could have managed every game.

Pat has a lot of fans on this board, but people are going to complain about a badly managed game.

As far as I can remember, yep. But supposedly that was the idea.

Second guessing is a fan's prerogative!  Even the best managers make a few bad calls in a season.

If that is all true, then Murphy got too cute by at least a half. That is such a narrow strategic path he tried to walk, that I think he was destined to fail, because Devin still had to warm up so it's not like you completely spared him. So Devin didn't get total rest, the rest of the bullpen is still shot with seven more games before a day off, and we lost a winnable game against a key team. Just brutal.

That insinuates he would've come out for the 8th & not Megill, which would've surprised me.

There's also the possibility, however slim and never to be said publicly, that Murphy, et al, wanted to see if Koenig had the guts to see it through.  He didn't.
