Four consecutive home losses to Charleston have the Low-A Mudcats on the brink of losing their division lead to Lynchburg. RHP Travis Smith makes his 2nd start of the week (4.2 scoreless innings with 2 Ks in 70 pitches on Tuesday). DH Braylon Payne broke out of a rut (.414 OPS in prior 64 PAs) with a homer and 2 singles yesterday.

23-year old RHP Sam Garcia (2.08 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 11.4 K/9 in 34.2 Low-A IP) makes his High-A debut as Wisconsin tries to clinch a 4-2 home series victory over Cedar Rapids. CF Eduardo Garcia has a 20-game on-base streak and leads the team in homers (9) and RBIs (28).

Man I hope Travis Smith is okay and the short hook was planned today. I know he was pitching on 4 days rest so maybe it was intentionally short but 31 pitches in 3 innings and getting pulled with the state of the Mudcats pitching staff doesn't feel very intentional.

The AAA Sounds have already clinched a home series win over Gwinnett and now turn to RHP Garrett Stallings (1.15 ERA, 0.70 WHIP, 8.6 K/9 in 15.2 IP) for his 2nd spot start of 2025. 2B Ray Delgado comes in with a 7-game hitting streak.

Muddies break the losing streak.

Sounds up early.
I will miss Cornielle’s start today but will look forward to reading about it tomorrow.

Biloxi has won 4 of 5 home games against Montgomery this week and goes for another one with RHP Alexander Cornielle getting his 2nd start of the week (6 shutout innings, 5 Ks in 86 pitches on Tuesday). C Matt Wood has 3 HRs and 2 SBs in his last 5 games (after 1 HR, 2 SBs in his first 33 games of the year).

I’m picking up a lot of things slowly from our minor league savants, and I am beginning to understand the urgency of keeping Eduardo Garcia in the org. He can play anywhere in the infield or outfield. He has power and speed and gets on base. The only problem is his 27 percent K rate, which is bad but not catastrophic.

He’s average age for his level at 22 in high-A. I would think, if he keeps producing, that a promotion sometime this season would help the Brewers’ pitch come minor league FA season.

I'd like to see him get moved up to Biloxi soon to see how the bat looks there. He can play pretty well both SS and CF and has above average power. Definitely a guy you'd like to keep in the org if he can go to AA this year and keep the K-rate under 30% and still flash the power/glove combo.

I'm calling BS on savant's distance on Ernesto's HR. 110.6 EV, 30 LA only going 389ft sounds like a load of crap.

Brody Hopkins just hit Luke Adams up near the face. Look like it caught the face protector though. Adams is staying in the game.

Boeve drew a walk after the Adams HBP and while Montgomery made a pitching change Adams was pinch ran for. Looks to have hopefully avoided a major injury.

I'm thinking maybe it's time to send Burke to Biloxi.  Dinges won't be far behind him if he keeps up this pace.

It's been said a few times but there's no space for Burke in AA until one of Wilken, Adames, Boeve get promoted to AAA unless they want Adams to get reps in LF.

Former Brewer farmhand Gregory Barrios in the lineup for Montgomery.  Looks like he was injured to start the season, but he hasn't exactly given any reasons so far to regret giving him up for Civale.

Don't look now (because I'll tell you here): The Sounds gained another game on Lehigh Valley today. They are now 4.5 GB with two series remaining in the first half. I believe (kind of 😁)

I could make a case for any of Wilken, Boeve, or Adams to get a promotion. Then Burke to AA, it would be nice to be able to move or another good bat to Appleton but with Josh A. would have been the guy but injuries, Bitonti isn't quite ready.

Garcia to AA and Pena to A+ would work well also. Murray could go to AAA if space in AA needed.

What’s the case for Boeve? He’s struck out 30% of the time and has yet to play the field this year.

Wilken’s 15 HR are nice, but the matching 15 singles are equally discouraging. Brock might need to improve on that 27.5 K% and .208 batting average before earning a promotion.

Adams probably has the best statistical case for a bump up, but is the worst fit positionally playing mostly 1B this year with EMJ (& eventually Black) lined up for most of those reps. Guess they could slide him back to 3B but that eats into the reps they’ve been trying to get Seigler there.

Another issue is even with the monster start Burke is off to, he’s only got 3 HR and a .131 ISO (54th of 127 Midwest League hitters min. 100 PA). He’s kinda the anti-Wilken with 48 singles doing the heavy lifting for him right now. Similar to Areinamo repeating Wisco because they wanted him to show more selectivity/power, could see them waiting on a Burke promotion until he starts getting more XBH in the mix.

I hope they wait a while yet.  Let the guy enjoy his success for a bit before challenging him with the next level.  He has been a blast to watch this season!

Hypothetical for the minor-league gurus:

If an OF in Milwaukee went on the IL (I know, perish the thought; we've had enough of that already) & it would be between Rosario & Dalbeck to get the call, who would we see?

Small sample theatre but Rosario (131 wRC+ | 12.9 BB% | 21.4 K%) has been better than Dalbec (92 wRC+ | 8.5 BB% | 31.9 K%) since they came over. Eddie’s had more MLB success too.

Guess R/L could play into the hypothetical too.

Yeah, Garcia is an interesting case.

On the one hand you gotta think he’s itching to get out of Appleton with this being his fourth year there.

On the other hand Pratt and Lara have SS and CF on lock in Biloxi so he’d probably be bouncing mostly between 2B and corner OF (maybe 3B if Wilken were promoted).

Feel like barring injury most of the promotions will be closer to the draft and trade deadline, or maybe around the end of June when the A/A+/AA seasons reset for the second half.
