I’m calling shenanigans on that sausage race. They were barely jogging! Bratwurst appeared to cramp. There’s gotta be a sausage at Nashville they could call up. Maybe get a Hot Chicken in the race.

Then how exactly would you normalize the data to account for differences in the number of plate appearances, a bench player who is behind a better starter, a player who has missed time due to injuries, a player who plays multiple positions, etc.

Don't say what not to do - say what to do instead.

This is where WAR, while not being perfect, (especially when it comes to relief pitching) does a pretty good job at evaluating the totality of a position players’ contributions, both offensively and defensively, regardless of the role, and both fWAR and bWAR are in agreement that Jake Bauers, for his career, has literally been less valuable than an average AAA replacement player.

Yes, it’s true that Bauers has been better this year than his larger career body of work, but that’s a pretty low bar.

My point was that he is fortunate that he has received opportunities, whereas there are likely players similar to him who will toil in the minors most of their career and never get that shot.

Double strike on Murphy's bullpen management this series. Had Ashby throw 2 innings up 7 and 9 runs in game 1 and then tried to use him again on 1 day rest after 39 pitches in game 1.

Well, the game probably hands in the balance on this next AB. You definitely can’t afford to give up more than 1, and even that might be too much.

Mears vs. Betts and Smith feels like a recipe for disaster, but I'm not sure there are many better options at this point. Ashby was just too wild. He really needed to get Ohtani.

WAR is a counting stat.  It has a direct correlation with plate appearances.

Some players have fewer plate appearances than others because of injuries or being behind another better player at the same position.  That doesn't make them a worse player because they have a lower WAR.  wRC+ normalizes for plate appearances.

And I'd argue that what a player is doing today is what's important, not what a player did 4-6 years ago when he had a 63 and 82 wRC+, lowering his career wRC+ (or WAR, whatever the preferred measure is).

Ashby getting one out on 21 pitches is not good.

The movement on his pitches is ridiculous at times, and the curve especially bites when its right.    But the curve is too frequently just not even close to the plate, non competitive pitches too often.    Hopefully with more reps its improved

And that's why he hasn't been used in many high leverage situations.

He still has bouts of wildness.

I'm going to believe walking Ohtani and Smith saved us 2 runs. I know I'm wrong, but it is what I will believe.

Also, Mookie Betts hitting a sac fly on a 2-0 pitch seems like a loss for the Dodgers. We have a chance now when we maybe shouldn't, lets steal this one.

Correct. And he’s accumulated that negative WAR despite having enough opportunities for nearly 2000 career plate appearances.

wRC+ is going to paint him in a better light than WAR, but he’s still 16% below average for his career, and it’s an entirely offensive stat.
