Need to win today if we want any chance to make the series competitive. Pitching did its job yesterday but the bats just got mowed down by Snell. That cannot happen today. Chase Yamamoto early.

Yelich: .619 OPS

Frelick: .511 OPS

Turang: .452 OPS

I know last night was really tough with Snell, but we have to get more from our big lefty bats to have a chance to win this series.

There are some good vibes with this one. They crushed Yamamoto last time in Milwaukee and that game Andrew Vaughn made his debut with Milwauke and hit a HR in his first at bat.

Did some minor digging last night after Snell reminded us that he is a 2 time Cy Young winner and essentially got 3.5 months of this season to rehab a shoulder issue so he is nice and fresh this postseason...

The combined AAV contracts for the four starting pitchers the Brewers will face this series is roughly $170M once you take out the deferred money shenanigans....Dodgers essentially sport a top 10 MLB payroll, rougly $50M more than the Brewers entire team, for their postseason 4 man rotation.

The absurdity of MLB's current financial playing field on full display - and that would be the same for the Dodgers vs just about any other NLCS opponent, not just the Brewers.

Yamamoto has been on a run of great start, meh/bad start for awhile now...he scuffle against the Phillies last time out, so hopefully he isnt "on" tonight.  Gotta make him throw strikes.

Really need good Freddy for 6-7 innings tonight!

They won’t do this, but I’d like:

1 -  CF Frelick
2 - RF Chourio
3 - LF Bauers
4 - C Contreras
5 - DH Yelich
6 - 1B Vaughn
7 - 3B Durbin
8 - 2B Turang
9 - SS Monasterio

Monasterio started 3 games against the Dodgers this year. The Brewers gave up a total of 7 runs in those 3 games. We were fine. Remember when Ortiz missed the last half of August? Can anyone recall off the top of their head anything that went totally wrong at SS?

Contrary to popular belief, the infield defense of the Brewers does not completely cease to function with Monasterio in for Ortiz.

I would much rather have Monasterio start and bring in Joey as a late inning defensive replacement

Its such a tough call, because the defense is the reason it was even a game into the 9th - Bauers has to be in the lineup against any righty starter, but I think he will be at 1st and they will have either Perkins or Collins in the lineup instead of Vaughn.

Wishing Collins could get something going because he would be such a solid fit for what the lineup needs when he was going good, but he's done nothing offensively to inspire confidence lately.

In ballparks lit by money’s glow,
Where dynasties in payroll grow,
A clash unfolds not just of might,
But of two worlds beneath the light.

In L.A., the gold runs deep—
A half-billion promises to keep.
Ohtani’s deal, the TV deals,
The luxury tax that barely feels
Like penalty. They buy their fate,
With stars aligned and gated gates.
From Freeman’s bat to Snell’s sharp flame,
They play the game with wealth and name.

But north in Milwaukee, a different creed—
No flashing checks, no corporate greed.
Just scrappy kids on rookie deals,
Whose value no big contract reveals.
They steal the base, they take the walk,
They turn one run into the clock.
No splashy bids, no front-page fame,
Just craft and grit and Murphy’s name.

They farm their arms, they trade their gems,
They build in back and draft the stems
Of future stars in low-ball lots—
No millions paid for what they’ve got.
Contreras, Chourio, Turang, Frelick—
Names the Dodgers barely pick
From depth charts lost in scouting files,
Not signed with billions, just a smile.

And yet they stand, both proud and tall—
One crowned by cash, one by the call
Of small-market heart, of odds defied,
Of runs eaked out, of games won wide
By pitch selection, by trust, by plan—
Not by the depth of a richer man.

So as the NLCS lights the sky,
It’s more than bats and gloves and cry
Of fans in blue or cream and gold—
It’s the story of a game grown old:
Can heart outlast the balance sheet?
Can dreams compete with corporate fleet?
For if the Brewers lift the crown,
A truth comes down, long pushed to ground—
That talent blooms on any field,
And not all greatness must be sealed
With dollar signs and TV rights—
Some win with soul, not salary heights.

But if the Dodgers take the prize,
The wealth machine will justify:
“We spend to win, it’s only fair,”
And smaller clubs will gasp for air.
The cap debate will rage anew—
What’s fair in baseball? Who gets due?

For the optimists:

The road team winning Game 1 of a 7-game series, across all sports, has something like a 50-60 percent chance of winning the series. That's...not that good. Obviously, the Brewers are underdogs and have the less-talented roster, but I've seen the Brewers open 2 NLCS opportunities with Game 1, home victories, only to lose the series. Every game is its own story. Even if we go down 2-0, we get the off day, win on Thursday, and suddenly Game 4 is huge for both teams. The amount of swing possible when you have to win 4 vs. 3 is just a lot higher.

I'm also just more and more aware of how many things have to go right for the Brewers to win games in the playoffs. We got A LOT of breaks last night, in terms of the double play and hard-hit balls for outs, but we also only put together one real offensive inning, and even in that inning, we had one hit. When your hope for tying the game comes down to a batter not getting out of the way of an inside fastball, you were really hoping to steal one.

That said, pitch selection was again a bugaboo for us. Snell had a lot to do with that, but at a certain point we needed to sit on changeups and curveballs and make him throw the fastball. Never happened. Gotta learn the lesson.

The most important over/under for me, for the series, is innings pitched by the Dodgers starters. I thought Priester/Peralta needed to combine for 8-10, and we needed to hope for less than 12 from Snell/Yamamoto. Did okay on the first part. Really struggling on the second. If we hold Yamamoto to 5 or 6, that's okay if Freddy matches. Really need him to shine, though.

I know people are down on Yelich. Rightfully so. He's struggled in his postseason career with Milwaukee. For me, I think it's just that I know he has to hit for us to win. I don't blame him if he can't. That's baseball. But he hit 29 homers for us this year. After getting on base a lot early in the Cubs series, he's really had a tough go. Maybe the 9th inning walk gets him going. I know this: he's a guy who tends to hit in bunches, and the longer we're around, the more he gets the chance to put a string together.

Who knows what we're saying this time next week, other than that it was a successful season. For now, I'm just glad to get one more week with these guys and fascinated to see how they respond. You can't fault their heart or effort. They're a fun group, and one I'm proud to root for, which wasn't as much the case in 2021 and 2023 (just too much offensive ineptitude for my taste).

Yelich's walk in the 9th was a good sign for him anyway.  His first two games against the Cubs were very good and good enough.  Been rough since though.  Turang has been struggling for a bit now and he was fooled badly on strike 3 in the 9th last night.
