What would the Brew have to add in a Peralta/Merrill swap?

The thing to keep in mind with Merrill is that the Padres locked him up for 10 years at $156M through 2035.  He's relatively cheap these next few years at $2M in '26, $7M in '27, $9M in '28 and $11M in '29 but then the annual salary goes up to $21M per year for the next six years after that.  It'll still be a bargain for him for those first few years at least - assuming of course he continues to build off of what he's done as a big leaguer these first couple of years.

But....with us already locking up Chourio through '33 and with my assumption that we MAY also look to do the same with Made at some point over the next year or two - I'm wondering if we'd be even interested in taking on another long term contract like Merrill's.....and that of course is making a HUGE assumption that the Padres would even consider moving on from him already, which is HIGHLY unlikely.

Padres are not going to trade Merrill but if they were, they wouldn't want 1 year of Freddy in return. The trade would probably need to be Made plus more.

With the Red Sox signing Ranger Suarez, I've got to guess that they're out on trading for Freddy now, right?  Crochet, Gray, Bello, Suarez and a bunch of other younger guys (Tolle, Early, Oviedo, etc.).

Hopefully with Suarez off the market now that only intensifies other teams' pursuit of Freddy and maybe will force a team to up their current offer a bit to get a deal done?  I guess we can hope!

Maybe the O's?

Jackson Chourio.

If you're looking at a package from the Yankees, would you prefer Lombard or Kilby?

The Mets make a TON of sense here.  They have young, controllable MLB-ready starting pitching that the Brewers would desire in a Freddy trade.  Also, the Mets have clearly stated that they are NOT going to be signing any free agent pitchers and are only looking to trade for one.

With them just signing Bo, they need a cheap Ace - Peralta for Tong/Pena/Comp pick and call it a day

Mets could also use another reliever and Bichette reportedly playing 3B for them. Maybe something like:

Peralta & Koenig or Megill for Sproat and Baty.

Is this a joke?

Well I'm not a GM but Baty seems to be a Brewers type guy who is pre-arb and can play all over the place plus he had a nice breakout last season. Sproat and Tong are both decent upside arms with lots of control. obviously there could be additions/subtractions on either side but those seem like decent targets in areas of need for us.

IF that's all we could get for BOTH Peralta and either Koenig/Megill, then you don't make the trade at all.  I would argue that Peralta alone should get a bit more than Sproat and Baty....so no chance in H-E-Double Hockey Sticks I'm also including either Koenig or Megill into that trade as well!

Brewers would be smart to grab Tong in a trade imo. He seems to have the deception they like to work with. I wonder if this is happening because Woodruff excepted the offer. I'm guessing Brewers rethinking that decision.

Hector Gomez does have some ties in the Dominican Republic baseball circles. I’m not sure how that really helps him with trade rumors though

there are definitely some guys from the dodgers who are interesting, but if they aren’t trading us andy pages I just assume do business with another team  if we insist on trading Freddy. They’re direct competition for winning the pennant and are possibly the only NL team who is already clearly better than we are

The thing about trading Freddy is why trade him to a team you're already chasing? Dodgers should be on the no trade list.

If the Dodgers offer the best package then you take that package.  The Brewers have to build for the future and not just this upcoming season.  The Brewers have to look 3-5 seasons ahead.  It is just how MLB is for small market teams.

From the sources I know and have asked there has been no names exchanged from any of the team’s that have contacted the Brewers.  Basically it has just been asking if he is still available and that is about it.

How are we this far along in the offseason and no names have been exchanged from any team?  Very weird.

I'm getting the feeling that if Peralta is traded to the Mets, Baty will be part of the trade.  Really hoping he isn't the main piece.
