When I looked at the Brewers’ roster and needs, my best thought was “package some pitching for a MLB-ready lf prospect with power.”  Right now Josh looks like he could be only a year away from fitting that bill.

In case anyone else has a bit of the shakes withdrawing from baseball season so suddenly, here's a very manually compiled list of Brewers playing winter ball and, in the Arizona Fall League.  Let me know if I missed anyone (or rosters change a lot over the course of a winter ball season--I will try and update if guys get added):

LIGA DOMINICANA (LIDOM):

Aguilas Cibaeans - Steward Berroa - OF, Eddys Leonard - INF/OF, Anthony Seigler - INF/C

Estrellas Orientales - Luis Pena - SS (drafted to them but not playing yet), Sammy Peralta - LHP

Tigres del Licey - Jesus Made - SS (drafted to them, but not playing yet)

Toros del Este - Carlos Rodriguez - RHP

LIGA Venezolana

Caribes de Anzoategui - Andruw Monasterio - INF

Aguilas del Zulia - Jackson Chourio (TBD on how much action he sees this winter)

Cardenales de Lara - Jeferson Quero - C (big start for Quero), Eduardo Garcia - INF/OF

Tiburones de La Guaira - Stiven Cruz - RHP, Yerlin Rodriguez - RHP

Jadher Areinamo is playing for Tiburones de la Guaira if anyone is still not over the Danny Jansen trade.

Yeah. The Dinges one is just really disappointing for the player. I have no direct intel on this but it certainly appears it is likely related to a re-aggravation of his hamstring injury or a separate leg injury. When his last AB is listed as a slow-roller to 3B that kind of just leads me in that direction. He's dealt with a couple nagging injuries in his brief tenure but, we all know, this soft tissue type of injury (whether it's continued pulls or strains of that hamstring complex) can really linger. This was a really massive AFL season to get him very valuable reps defensively. He has shown very plus signs as a backstop but he's also been wildly inconsistent with his footwork and throwing to the bases - second base, primarily the biggest issue at present. I was really looking forward to him getting those reps to bring the experiences deeper into his off-season and into spring training. Now? It almost feels like he may lose out on the rest of the AFL season. I absoluteley hope I'm wrong.

BTW, Surprise lost last night to first place Scottsdale (the Scorpions have really had the Saguaros number early and I do believe now possess a 3-1 head-to-head record?) in a nail biter, 5-4. They fall to 2.0 GB of first place Scottsdale and now sit with a 10-6 record. The Saguaros trailed 5-3 headed into the ninth and final frame. Our guy, and stand out AFL performer, 2B (Is this his first appearance back at his old 2B stomping grounds?) Josh Adamczewski (1-for-4, 2 R) led the mini rally off with a lead-off single. He advanced to third on an error. He scored on a GIDP. The Saguaros got aboard again via a two out walk but then flied out to RF to end the threat.

No other Brewers players played.

Rough day for LHP Nate Peterson

2/3 IP, 2 H, 3 BB, 1 K, 3 ER, 1 Balk, 1 WP, and 1 Disengagement Violation.

Ouch.

LHP Jesús Broca was only slightly better:

2 1/3 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 2 HR, 4 K, 2 ER, 1 E (Pick-off)

No Dinges. No Adams (who has now sat two straight after being pulled early his last game after a game in which he was pulled after a HBP)

Adamczewski, back in LF batting 3rd, 0-for-3, 1 RBI, 1 SF, and 1 K

O'Rae, back at 2B and continuing what has been a fantastic AFL (batting 8th):

2-for-3, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 2B (his fourth so far)

The Saguaros, improving to 11-6 overall, squeaked one out and gained a game back from Scottsdale, 8-7. They are now a mere 1/2 G back.

What level or quality of baseball would some of the foriegn winter league be equivalent to??? AAA.  If know the AFL is kind of in the AA realm. I guess that is a tricky question because you get some mlb players, some minor league guys, and a bunch of non mlb players.

Added the others I could find to this list (bolded/underlined), but only two of them have actually played in games so far and a few of them could be MiLB free agents soon.

Always fun to look through these rosters and see all the former Brewers and Brewers farmhands. From Pedro Severino and JC Mejia (sensing a theme) to Fernando Olguin, Jose Chavez and Jose Sibrian.

Jeferson Quero did it again for Cardenales, delivering a 3-run 7th inning homer to grab a 6-4 lead en route to victory:

Ahhhh, yes. The coveted 0-0 tie that doesn't even show up in the Standings record book. It appears they just scrimmaged last night. 😅

Down 8-0 in the bottom of the 2nd, Surprise rallied to close it to 8-7 with three runs in the bottom of the final inning (the 7th) but fell by that 8-7 score.

RHP Edwin Jimenez made his 5th appearance, tossing two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk.

Dylan O'Rae, playing second base and batting 9th, reached three times (single, walk, HBP) and stole his 5th base in six tries. Through 41 plate appearances, he has an .807 OPS, and the linked Baseball Reference pages so include up-to-date Surprise stats (usually updated by mid-morning).

Josh Adamczewski, playing left field and batting 3rd, singled and walked, .957 OPS thru 61 plate appearances.

Is there any doubt he'll be the backup catcher on OD?  Or does he play a few weeks or so in Nashville first?  Just seems like he's been in AAA for years now.

Quero’s been in AAA for two years, but with only 59 G | 251 PA on account of injury.

I’d guess the Brewers bring in a vet backup backstop for depth so Jeferson can get primary catcher reps in AAA.

At his end of year press conference, Arnold said he feels really, really good about him being on the big league roster to start next year.  I think they're prepping for Quero to be the backup next year. He'll be down to his final option year (though if needed, they'd likely be able to get a fourth due to the injury issues), and I think they believe he's ready, or at least will be after a (hopefully) full offseason of health.

The way Murph talked him up in spring last year was different than the way he usually discusses young players too. I have a feeling he will actually use Quero if he's on the roster. A decent amount more than Haase and Jansen played this past season.

I won't rule out the idea of adding a catcher, but assuming Quero does stay healthy, I'm guessing they go the route of minor league deal or split deal for a catcher like they did with Haase/Nola a couple years ago.

From a talent standpoint point, yes Quero should be the backup. However if we wait like 2-3 weeks we would gain an extra year of control so my guess is he will start in AAA.

The other issue is that Contreras doesn't take days of so from a development standpoint he will only get like 100-150 abs. Unless we expect Yeli to start playing a bunch more in left (which I dont).

My guess is he starts the 1st month in AAA then spends a like a month or so in the bigs. Somewhere in the middle of the year he spends a month in AAA to get some AB's and finishes the year in the bigs.

Agree. I still think a AAAA type of catcher will be added both for mlb depth like a Haase, as well as someone to cover in AAA. Who do we have as possible catcher there - I mean Wood maybe, but can’t expect Miller whose defense had been underwhelming at high A and AA so far.

I do wonder if Murph will start to “force” guys to sit more especially early and the last month given how the fatigue of a full season was part of the narrative on how the brewers offense disappeared in the playoffs outside game 1/2 in the NLDS.
