My point is, the 40 man roster is full, there is not a lot of chaff there to begin with, yet there are other non-roster players likely to see Milwaukee before Wilken. So it could be a numbers/opportunity thing with him.

Verbosity aside, I do not think you’re saying anything different;  so I don’t know what I’m seriously misinterpreting.

Even if someone disagrees with this overall position in the larger debate they are having, it is pretty absurd to me that this specific post has received four downvotes…..seems a bit over the top.

Made, Pena, & Fischer are unlikely to make it to the big leagues this year

Adams, Bitonti, & Adamczewski arent likely to play 3B in the majors

Id bet they could all play out of position and play better defense than wilken

Besides no reason for anyone to be called up for 3rd this year let rengifo start if he isn't productive enough kick ortiz over to 3rd and call jett up to play short wait until may or whenever so we dont lose year of control

The time is fast approaching when the greatest collection of young organizational talent in baseball will start spitting-out the impact positional talent the team needs to completely fill-out their 26-man roster without having to sign meh positional talent as stopgaps because of payroll limitations.

Soon there will be no need for the Rengifo’s & Sanchez’s.

Not really, will always need and take a backup catcher for 1.5 mil contreras will more than likely be traded next offseason

if quero then lights it up and proves hes the guy a good prospect like marco dinges will be more valuable flipped for mlb ready pitching or younger prospects rather than just him filling the roster and being a backup

whats he gonna get 150 abs? Sign the backup and take the trade value

Seems the Brewers could have had Urias if they wanted him

With incentives tied to plate appearances, it  looks like St. Louis views him as a utility infielder not a starter. A view that likely explains why he was a free agent until after camp opened and signed a 2 million dollar guarantee.

It will be interesting to see whether Rengifo or Urias will be the better player next year.  I was hoping they would sign Urias.

I'm just hypothesizing but I wonder if Rengifo (over Urias) having outfield experience also allows the Brewers to DFA someone like Berroa and free up a 40man spot for alternative use. JC, SF, GM, BP, BL, AB, CY, JB, LR, SB, etc... 1/4 of the Brewers current 40 man roster can play in the outfield and Jett is lurking.

I think Rengifo vs. Urias is pretty easy to understand. Urias has been a better player, but he’s entering his age 32 season. Rengifo is three years younger. If you buy that Rengifo’s struggles last year were an outlier, they’re pretty comparable now. You trust the 29 year-old to hold more of that value than the 32 year-old.

Details of the contract:

Rengifo will make a $2MM salary in 2026 with a $1.5MM buyout on a $10MM mutual option, per Jon Heyman of The New York Post. The incentives are based on plate appearances, with $100K for 150 and then each 50 PA increment up to 350, followed by $250K for 400 and 450, then $500K for 500. There’s also a one-time assignment bonus of $250K if Rengifo is traded.

Am I reading this right that at 500 ABs, he will accumulate $1.5M in incentives? ($100k*5+$250k*2+$500k)

So "best case" scenario is $5M for one year ($2M base, $1.5M incentives, $1.5M buyout). Seems like a fair deal for both sides for a decent bounce-back player.

Exactly. And if he racks up those bonuses, Milwaukee will likely be happy to pay them. Only way he does (barring the injury bug) is if he’s playing well, given that Hamilton can platoon and Wilken/Jett/Pratt/Adams/trade candidates could take over if he’s struggling.
