I literally deleted a line because it seemed too long saying he would be the only one that would overlap but that's its essentially a lock that he isn't signing back, so it doesn't really matter.   In addition, if you worked it out as an 'extension' right now you could structure it around Yelich's remaining year

Do you think it is a "lock" because of the cost or the way they handled him in arbitration?  I just have a feeling he is going to break out big time this year with a healed hand.  Would be nice to extend him out a few years.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

That ship has long since sailed. I’m sure if the Brewers offered Contreras 16M+ AAV for 5 or more seasons, he’d sign tomorrow. But they won’t do that, and Contreras has zero reason to sign for anything less.

Yelich had just the massive 2020 extension with Milwaukee. The Brewers bought out Braun’s arbitration years plus a little bit of free agency in 2008. My broader point is extending players meaningfully beyond arbitration years rarely seems to work well.

The Marlins also did an extension for Yelich that bought out Arby and a few years of FA.

Yelich's $22M wouldn't be so bad if he hadn't gotten hurt.  I suppose you could say the same about Braun.  And we all know we won't be buying out every single player past arbitration, but certain ones are worth the risk.

That’s fair. It seems rare for nine figure bets on aging players in their 30’s to pay off like we expect, though.

The better play seems to be having a reliable stream of prospects to replace the 30 year olds.

you’re going to tell the folks who lease your luxury suites and buy season tickets that it’s probably not a good idea to extend Yelich as you send those people their renewal notices?

I am skeptical that whoever is responsible for leasing Brewers suites at major corporations are worried about who the left fielder is.

I assume corporations are worried about return on investment. In other words, is bringing clients to baseball games resulting in additional business?

Certainly, the team must produce a winning and enjoyable product but that doesn’t necessarily mean we are obligated to extend aging veterans deep into their 30s.

Corporations probably did not regret missing out on Wily Adames during our 97 win season last year. If new players continue to win games, then the new players become stars, too.

The point is: the Brewers extended Yelich because he was a tremendous player at the time and it was in the best interest of the organization to do so all things considered not just future payroll considerations.

Adjust your predictions accordingly

I’m sorry about the injuries, but not sorry that Craig Yoho (signing bonus $10,000 in 2023) will likely earn MLB-level pay for a month.

What the heck is a rhomboid?

Anyway… that’s what depth is for. It actually sorta makes the roster work a little better to be able to start with Zastryzny on the IL and then activate him once there’s a need faith a different lefty inevitability inured or ineffective.

My guess is Easton McGee is the cleanest fit to take that final pen spot since he’s right handed. Other right handed options are Coleman Crow and either Sproat or Henderson if either does not make the rotation to start the year.

Strzelecki has been my dark horse to make the OD roster all spring..

Could be. Adding a pitcher to the 40 man and DFAing Berroa makes some sense. Feels like they’d get better use out of one more pitcher on the roster rather than an 8th outfielder.

Are Baddoo & Berroa both injured?  Thought I read something about Baddoo that way earlier.  Berroa seems to have been MIA all spring.
