Bailey Ober starts for Minnesota riding momentum from a complete game two-hitter against Miami. The right-handed soft-tosser commands six pitches including a "fastball" that averages just 88.6 mph. Ober faced Milwaukee twice in 2023, allowing two earned runs in each start. source

Milwaukee goes with lefthander Robert Gasser, making his Brewers season debut and eighth career big league start. Gasser turns 27 this month and averaged 13.3 K/9 over six starts at Nashville this year.

Today is going to be overcast and windy - not sure of it’ll be blowing in, out, or across, but maybe good practice for Chicago. Supposed to rain later in the afternoon - shouldn’t be a problem unless we get a game going over 3.5 hours.

I’m expecting multiple innings from the low leverage bullpen arms today. We’ve set up the rotation with two spot starts this weekend to get ready for Cubs and Dodgers next week, so probably looking to set up the bullpen, too. Feels like they might sacrifice this one for the greater good - unless the offense unexpectedly rises to the occasion.

Yeah I imagine the plan for today is going to be like yesterday; Gasser and Woodford for most, or all, of the game. Anderson and Drohan pitching an inning each perhaps, if needed. Would set them up nicely for the Cubs series. I wonder what they'll do with Gasser after this start though. Won't strictly need a 5th starter until the 27th if my math is correct. They might still want a 5th starter in order to keep them on an extra day of rest in which case he might stick around. But I suspect it'll be Patrick making that extra start at some point if needed, and Gasser being optioned for an extra bullpen arm.

Ober seems like a pitcher who will either no hit the Brewers or allow eight runs. He seems like an outlier, especially by RHP standards. Kyle Hendricks usually gave us fits, I think.

Vaughn is 5-23 against Ober with 2HR in his career. Yelich is 3-6. No one else has more than 3 career at bats against him

Assuming we get the Mitchell, Hamilton, Bauers trio today. Sanchez caught yesterday so probably a Vaughn DH day with Bill behind the plate.

Betting odds that Chourio swings at the first pitch of the game is -220 in my book.

A couple posters here are not going to be happy that Yeli is available...

Today can be his reboot game with 3 games vs Cubs MTW then

3 vs Dodgers then 3 vs Cardinals, so we will have our hands full.

And honestly if he's not going to go out on a rehab assignment I'd rather find out today if he might be healthy enough to play and at least have the chance of not playing a series against the Cubs shorthanded.  I just hope he's healthy, and if not, that they put him on the IL instead of hoping he gets better in 72 hours again.

The question is will he be available tomorrow. We have seen 1 day Yelich before.

This was a tough coin flip re Yelich the last week. He went w/o a rehab which players do sometimes, it's not some kind of unique thing. As cautious as he's always been w/his comments over the years when hurt, I can understand why they believed him when he said he was good. Then after one game, the soreness. It's in the back, which had the surgery last year but had nothing to do with the latest IL stint. Basically they rolled the dice on him being ready for the six games next week over having Tyler Black on the team in the last two vs SD & this current series. Would Black have made a difference? I dunno; neither does anyone else. They did win 3 of the 4 in the interim. Hopefully Yelich is good now.

I agree with you. I always find it funny when folks lose their minds without information. We don't know the convos behind the scenes but we always act like we do.

I didn't/don't really have a problem with keeping Yelich around to see if he responded.  I just would prefer that they not do it again if the same thing happens again when they're going into series with the Cubs and Dodgers.

I hear ya. I wouldn't be surprised if he could've gone yesterday but was given an extra day setting up sort of a litmus test today.

From the rumor-mongering files, Cooper Pratt isn't in the lineup for Nashville today. Nash-Chi is a pretty short flight though & I imagine it's nothing more than a day off.

Re: Strzelecki ... that felt procedural to me? Even after the game when Murphy was talking about the plan for the night he mentioned Patrick/Anderson/Hall/Uribe (but didn't need anyone after Patrick) so Peter wasn't in the plans seemingly.

I have a hunch this was the Brewers way of throwing him a bone and exposing him to waivers to let him see if he has MLB interest anywhere else? They just did a similar-ish thing with Waguespack earlier this month. He exercised an out clause, didn't find any takers, then re-signed with us back to the minors.

I'm hypothesizing but if there is any merit to it I think it's a tip of the cap move by Milwaukee.
