Could the Milwaukee Brewers reunite with former ace Freddy Peralta?

In the latest edition of his podcast "Sources Tell Jeff Passan," ESPN's MLB insider sorts through a bunch of names as Monday's trade deadline approaches and, when talking about Peralta, Passan brings up a potential return to the Brewers for the right-hander, who Milwaukee shipped to New York in the offseason for two key prospects in infielder-center fielder Jett Williams and right-handed starter Brandon Sproat.

The Mets were expected to be a contender in the NL East with the addition of Peralta, but enter play Tuesday at 45-62, the second-worst record in the NL and fourth-worst in MLB. The Brewers, meanwhile, sit atop the NL Central at 66-40 and trail the Los Angeles Dodgers for the best record in MLB by one game.

Peralta's 4.47 FIP is the worst of his career and his 4.99 ERA is second-worst behind the 5.29 he put up in 2019, his first full season in the majors. Last year, Peralta had a 3.64 FIP and career-best 2.70 ERA, finishing fifth in NL Cy Young Award voting.

"He's been terrible and it hurts playing in front of a Mets defense that (has been bad)," Passan said.

While also mentioning and then dismissing the Chicago Cubs as a potential destination in a discussion with co-host Richard Staff, Passan broached the reunion possibility, which would mean David Stearns, the former Brewers president of baseball operations who now runs the Mets' front office, would ship Peralta back to not only the pitcher's former team, but the executive's ex-franchise as well.

"One thing I did hear this week, Richard, is that the Mets have been talking with the Brewers about Freddy Peralta," Passan said. "I don't know if that's going to happen, but it's the kind of deal where you see what they would get back from Milwaukee, considering what they gave up, is that a trade that David Stearns politically—already just getting fileted every time he's mentioned in New York—is that something he can pull off? Could he actually deal him back to Milwaukee?"

Staff, a Mets fan, retorted that the conspiracy theories would flood the radio talk shows with the much lesser return for Peralta than what the Mets gave up.

Ignoring whether or not it would be a good idea from a player quality/roster perspective, getting him back for presumably almost nothing would be incredible. Just hilarious.

Dan Zymborski also pitched a Peralta to brewers trade: Blake Burke and Jett Williams as the package. I don’t actually hate this package. Williams hasn’t hit at AAA and Burke doesn’t have a vastly different skillset than Fischer. Burke may never be a starting caliber 1b/DH type at the mlb level.

ultimately it only makes sense if the Brewers think they can get him back on track to a sub 4 era type starter the rest of the way.

No chance. Jett's value has perhaps fallen, but that would be a massive overpay IMO.

Yeah just because everyone knows Freddy would probably be very good for us the second he came back, he has been very bad for the mets and the price should reflect that. Half of what we got for him and another solid prospect in a position that will be open for us next year is too much for what he's done this year.

I'd stay away from Peralta who has been damaged by the narrowed ABS strike zone so that some of his high fastballs have become balls that used to be called strikes. This depreciates the other pitches he throws.

Every trade suggestion in the media:

brewers get: some guy they don’t want anymore

other team gets: half the brewers farm system

From a logic standpoint, it makes total sense. The Brewers could use rotation depth and Peralta has had a lot of success here. The Mets are contending and have no use for him.

Optically, I think there is just too much to figure out. Stearns looks silly if he gives up two decent prospects for Peralta only to sell him months later for pennies on the dollar. And assuming Peralta is still QO worthy, he needs to get back compensation that at least exceeds a comp pick.

My understanding is that peralta does not qualify

We would not be able to if we traded for him, no.

The Mets can if they don’t trade him though, which is why I was saying any offer from us would at least have to beat that price.

And that's why I don't see this happening. From the Brewers' perspective, given the year Peralta is having & the fact he's a rental I don't see the appropriate cost being something Stearns could possibly go for. Giving up Burke & Williams would be silly.

Mets would only get a pick at the end of the 4th round if they stick a QO on Freddy so I don't think that's much value.

In that case, after what I saw last night let's pick up Peralta & mandate that Doug Eddings call balls & strikes for the rest of his starts😀.

Yeah, there’s no way we’re paying that to rent a struggling Peralta for 2 months.

I can probably talk myself into Coleman Crow plus Brock Wilken and picking up the whole tab on Freddy. I don’t think that’s going to get it done.

Somehow a Peralta for Jett/Burke swap is even more of a return than Peralta/Myers for Jett/Sproat, with a currently far worse version of Peralta and it being for even less time with Peralta than the original deal as well, and that radio host expects me to take it serious

Yep, Myers was included in the original deal. Nice reminder.

I'd peruse the system to find a pitcher that I'd rather include instead of Crow, but that sounds pretty close AFA what I'd be willing to do.

The main reason for trading Peralta for Crow is so we can frame the inevitable "Stearns Eats Crow" headline on the NY Post sports page.
