Thinking back to what Sabathia did in '08, I doubt if we'll ever again see a rent-a-pitcher turn in work like he did w/o regard to future endeavors. It was remarkable at the time & even more so years later.

And that goes directly against the folks upset that Miz was scratched the day before the all star break and that Drohan was scratched yesterday. CC was running on absolute fumes. That’s fine - the goal in 2008 was to get to the playoffs for the first time in 26 years. If extra rest is what is needed to get the starting pitchers at their best in the playoffs, so be it. These guys are young and haven’t had these workloads. Is it cautious and frustrating when the division is still in play? Of course. Would it be far more frustrating to have an IL stint and/or poor performance in October due to fatigue? Of course.

Exactly, we have seen time after time the Brewers either not having their best pitcher available or nowhere near their best. From Sabathia, Gallardo, Sheets, Williams, Woodruff and even Fingers/Vuk back in the day. Since the playoffs are a near lock, let's try something different.

The game sure has changed from the days where most teams had four man rotations and many of them would go seven eight or nine innings. 

Granted most weren't throwing triple digit gas. Not sure what velocity so the old timers would have based on today's technology. 

Nolan Ryan and JR Richards come to mind.

Neither scenario you pose is guaranteed. Injuries always occur,to upset your applecart. Do you really think that Drohan not starting in SF on July 29 will really be the linchpin for the Brewers to win their first championship in their 57 year (58?) history?

You could also fire on all cylinders on July 29 and lose anyway. Nobody think it's guaranteed but you play the high probability path. I personally wouldn't care if they told Miz to go fishing for 6 weeks.

Sabathia was pitching complete games on 3 days rest. 

On  comparison to pitchers going 5 innings on 5 days rest.

We’ll never know what would have happened in 2008 if Sheets hadn’t gotten hurt and if the offense hadn’t completely disappeared in September.
