Oh I'm aware of that. But is there some rule that he can't acquire anyone until Monday? I almost guarantee the reason it always takes him so long is because he's hesitant, hems and haws over the asking price and then the guy gets traded somewhere else.

He did. It wasn't a major trade but it was a someone.

He's a name people recognize. He had success once upon a time. He's a veteran with "playoff experience" so he's obviously going to do well in the playoffs again. If we were sellers and someone traded for Yelich people would be talking about how that team was willing to go for it by getting a needle mover.

Kevin Gausman is 10 months removed from: 3.8 WAR, 3.5 ERA and 1.06 WHIP.

Playoffs: 2.93 ERA and 26 strikeouts over 30.2 innings pitched

IF you mean literally last year when saying "success once upon a time" then sure. He is also going to the best defense in the MLB. This was a great get for them and you are severely underrating Kevin Gausman.

Velocity down, off speed getting hammered, nine home runs allowed in June, 6.10 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in July.

We will see which version of Gausman shows up in Chicago.

Whatever he did last season in the playoffs has zero relevance to what can be expected out of him this year in the playoffs. Jeff Suppan won NLCS MVP. People see a name they recognize and that he has some success in the playoffs and think "needle mover!!!". The reality is he's a 35 year old pitcher with an ERA+ that says he's league average. That's not a bad move for the Cubs at all. They don't have a great farm system so this might have been the best they could realistically do without totally wiping out the system.

It wouldn't have been a terrible move for the Brewers either. We could use a league average innings eater. It's also possible he does catch fire and help the Cubs make a deep playoff run. The same thing happened in 2006 with Jeff Suppan. But it isn't likely. Nor would it be worth trading for him based on it. My point is his name recognition and past playoff performance make him seem like a much bigger catch than he really is.

Seriously. I'm not sure Gausman would even crack our rotation.

The White Sox would have been better doing nothing at all than acquiring Luis Castillo and paying all of his salary.

Teams are desperate for pitching and selling GMs are offering up the junk from the back of their garage.

I think he'd be a guy who could be used as an innings eater who would allow us to skip a start or two from some of the younger guys. We could use that. It would also give us a chance to see if Sproat can be a little more effective in relief. If he can turn into a Patrick type reliever it would be a nice boost going forward and another legit weapon in the playoffs. If not at least we'll know and we get the workload relief we'll probably need for the young pitchers to be effective in October.

It's not relevant on whether or not Gausman would crack the Brewers rotation or not. The Cubs and Brewers are not the same team, nor am I saying I wanted to Brewers to get Gausman.

I'm saying it was a ridiculous comment made essentially paraphrasing that he is a washed up has been, when he pitched a dominant October and regular season for a world series participant LAST YEAR.

His FIP is also 3.5 this season and the Cubs have a spectacular defense and have made David Peterson look like a solid #3.

That somebody was me. An accurate paraphrase of what I said would be he was a name people recognized which made the trade seem bigger than it was. If you're going to call my comment ridiculous at least get what I said correct.

I understood entirely what your sarcastic and completely incorrect comment meant.

I don't care what Gausman did in the past, two top-20 prospects to rent the current version of him is ludicrous.

The Brewers won't be giving up two top-20s for Clay Holmes, that's for sure. And Holmes has similar or better numbers to Gausman this year.

If you did then you wouldn't have paraphrased it incorrectly. I never once called him washed up or a has been. In a follow up post I clearly said he was a league average pitcher. How does that square with me believing he's washed up? My comments had less to do with him than it did with people's perception of players like him. Instead of reinterpreting what people say just accept they meant what they said.

Top 20 in a farm system in the mid 20's. The cost for the Cubs is as much about what they didn't have to begin with. Further depleting an already weak system probably helps the Brewers more going forward than it helps the Cubs this year.

Fair… but getting frustrating that other teams are trading spare parts for decent pieces and we seem to be content with our current roster as is (supplanted by some AAAA lottery tickets that we get for taking on dead weight salary)

I think nobody wants to trade our top tier of guys… but watching all our main competition bolster their lineup while we do nothing has to be a major blow to our guys on the roster

This is the first "spare parts" deal I've seen... though I may be missing something.

I would love to see Clay Holmes. He seems like a REALLY good fit. Heavy GB pitcher, that's always good in Milwaukee. He's been hurt, but not his arm, a broken leg from a comebacker and he was throwing the ball well.

All those things could help.
I'd still want a reliever and a good one, but... this one is kinda baffling. But again, our #13 and #23 prospects are Ragsdale, .292/.429/698 and a 1.127 OPS with 12 HRs and 31 SBs with 70 speed and our #23 is Frank Cairone who is a unique case, but one above, Coleman Crow, a pitcher we know can throw at the MLB level and Jayden Dubanewicz is #24(and I'm not tossing him into a trade given what we've seen in 2 years from him).

Do you not understand what he was attempting to articulate to you?

Skubal was the player everyone wanted. HE was the valuable piece. Teams weren't going to go and trade for another starter until they knew if they were getting him... which is why @LouisElysaid "nothing was going to happen until Skubal was traded.

And I'd almost guarantee the reason it takes him so long is... just because it doesn't.

We ROUTINELY make trades BEFORE everyone else. Adames, Priester, Vaughn...

Ask me after the deadline.

The Jays basically flipped Gausman for Soriano...

But we need a starter, Gausman has a good Fastball and his 3.51 FIP doesn't really seem like he stunk up the joint.
At this point... I'd be very happy with Clay Holmes, Dustin May and an arm like Riley O'Brien.

AGAIN though, what are teams going to ask for? Do they expect Adamczewski for one of these guys? I'd hate teo see him in LF just raking.

I don’t follow the minor leaguers closely at all, but apparently the Brewers traded two of their top 15 prospects for May and Romero.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.
