In the time that Rengifo has been with SD, Joey Ortiz has an OPS+ of 146...

Luis Rengifro (SDP)

140
Monastario 119
Caleb Durbin 106
Isaac Collins 102
Anthony Siegler 102

Cooper Pratt 100
William Contreras 98
Brandon Lockridge 92
Christian Yelich 89
Luis Lara 88
Joey Ortiz 83
David Hamilton 80
Sal Frelick 75
Luis Rengifro (MKE) 50

OPS+ Comparison.. kind of highlights our continued offensive underperformance imo

Fair enough.  Does that mean that the hitting coach needs to be let go.  We have never heard that before...

Rengifo is a sample of 87 PA. For the season the Padres are at 4.24 R/G (21st) and 95 OPS+ (24th). If the Brewers are underperforming at 4.96 R/G (5th) and 103 OPS+ (10th), I'm not sure what adjective best describes a Padres offense paying Xander Bogaerts $25M for a 79 OPS+. or Manny Machado $25M for a 98 OPS+, or Jake Cronenworth $12M for a 68 OPS+ with like half a billion left to go on those contracts.

Monasterio has been a lefty killer for sure with 97 PA of 162 wRC+ vs LHP, but a less impressive (more Brewers-esque?) 82 wRC+ over 151 PA vs RHP. Seigler has been good against RHP (116 wRC+) and with the monster (134 wRC+), but abysmal on the road (55 wRC+) and vs LHP (40 wRC+). Two useful bench pieces forming one solid platoon I guess.

Durbin (105 vs 102 wRC+ and 101 vs 106 OPS+) has been essentially the same hitter he was here and Collins (122 vs 100 wRC+ and 118 vs 102 OPS+) has been worse. Not sure how either are any kind of indictment against the Brewers (especially considering they were the ones that identified Collins as an MLB player in the first place).

Who gets the credit for Turang (127 wRC+), Chourio (123 wRC+), Bauers (142 wRC+), Mithcell (114 wRC+), and Vaughn (139 wRC+)?

I don’t get the point of the comparison. Durbin and Collins are doing exactly what most of us would’ve expected. Mona and Seigler are running with opportunities they were buried too deep in the depth chart to get here – happy for them. Rengifo has had a great 87 plate appearances – good for him. As Cheez points out, the guy who actually replaced him here has been better in that time.

We all know that Contreras and Yelich are struggling. So what’s the point – that we should’ve gotten rid of those guys instead of some of the guys we got rid of? That our coaching is screwed up? Seems unlikely that a couple of vets would get screwed up by coaching, and in Yelich’s case, you can’t coach age. Most of those other guys are either 21 and raw, on the upswing recently, or doing pretty much what you would expect. The exception is Frelick, but we may find out that he was playing hurt.

I just don’t see anything here.

Point is just that all 5 marginal guys we dealt or  let go of are outperforming the majority of the roster this year, and that is concerning

Which one of those five is playing SS over Cooper or Joey?

Which one of those five is playing RF instead of Bauers or Lara?

I see four guys that are pretty much 2B/3B only and a LF.

Harrison (2.9 rWAR) + Drohan (1.1 rWAR) + Hamilton (0.4 WAR) >>> Durbin (2.3 WAR) + Seigler (0.3 WAR) + Monasterio (0.2 WAR).

I guess I don't see what is concerning about it. The Brewers are a top five run scoring unit in MLB without any of those guys, have the best record in MLB (with a big assist from Harrison and Drohan in the run prevention department), and have a plethora of position prospects that should be filtering in over the next couple seasons that are better than any of the five guys listed.

Second-guessing everything is fun, isn't it? Are you suggesting they should have kept Rengifo? You are worried about Anthony Siegler and Isaac Collins? and I liked Caleb Durbin, but I like the pitchers the Brewers got even better. It took Durbin til game 73 to get his OPS out of the .500s. I am sure that would have gone over well here.

im not at all second guessing trading those guys for pitching. Its just that we had better batters making them expendable, but i feel the current lineup is underperforming

Durbin was a good player and the Brewers probably thought the same thing but getting Harrison was considered an upgrade. Zerpa getting injured was unfortunate but had to  give up something to get him and a late blooming average player was the cost, if the opportunity presented itself again they should take it.

As stated, Ortiz is outperforming Rengifo over the same period of time, they gave him ample opportunity and he couldn't take advantage of it.

again, not suggesting we would be better off with these guys, im concerned with the performance of guys here who should be doing better. the most glaring being the jump for Rengifro

So your concern is basically just about Yelich and Contreras? All the other guys are performing around expectation.

im concerned that the 5 mediocre guys we dropped are out-hitting the 9 better ones we kept. not suggesting they are better, but the lineup as a whole I would expect better from

Why would you expect better from the non Yelich, Contreras, Frelick players on that list? Is this a gripe that the Brewers can't coach hitting? A gripe that our FO made bad moves?

having all 5 players outhit the other 9 suggests a coaching concern to me, especially with one going from a 50 to a 140

Rengifo is in the middle of a sustained hot streak. That's all it is right now. He was always due for major positive regression.

What about what the Brewers have done with Bauers and Vaughn coming from other orgs? Shouldn't that lessen your concern?

Durbin is hitting at the same level as a year ago with worse underlying numbers. Collins is hitting comfortable worse than a year ago with worse underlying numbers. Seigler is hitting better but with only marginally better underlying numbers. Monasterio is hitting at the same level as a year ago with better underlying numbers.

If it's a coaching issue, why is that collective group not clearly better than they were a year ago in Milwaukee?
