Cubs are awful

1st and 2nd 0 outs and 3-1 count, their #9 hitter swings at two pitches not even close for the strikeout

I was thinking about the Brewers playoff performances since 2018 the other day, and I completely agree. I think there's something with Craig's personality that tightens up the team. I know we lost to the Mets in Murph's first year, but you could just sense the team was so much looser. Part of that is youth, but I think a lot of it is Murphy vs. Counsell.

I mean, if we are being honest, Murphy is no better in the postseason than Counsell ever was. He has two first round bounces and a 4-game belt whoopin’ on his resume.

Bro, what?

He has one first round bounce and as many series wins in two years as Counsell won in 9.

Yeah, Brewers would have rolled them like they did all year.

Didn't the Padres win/sweep us this year?

Yeah they swept us in August but brewers could have easily won 2/3 as well. Couple bad breaks at the end

Looks like we face the Padres.  This is gonna be tough.

It’s the playoffs. You have to expect that it will always be tough.

The Brewers will have to buck the recent playoff track record of teams with 100 wins. By my count since 2019 12 teams have won 100 games and 9 of them have lost in the division series. Only one has won the World Series, 1 lost in the WS, and 1 lost in the LCS.

Padres have some good bats and Mason Miller, no question.

Game 1: Tatis, Machado, Bogarts crushed three changeups from Boyd. Machado drove a 2-0 count 94 mph fastball from Boyd off the wall. Merrill with base hit up the middle, Passed ball and throwing error from Carson Kelly.

Game 2: Opposite field single from Bogarts,  sac fly Salas, Sheets HR off Palencia.

Miz will be different than the 94 mph stuff the Padres teed off on. Henderson’s changeup will be important to locate in Game 2.

Boyd’s changeups and Palencia’s second half struggles seem like the biggest problems for Cub pitching this series. Zero offense from Chicago makes it hard for San Diego to feel any meaningful pressure.

True, except Counsell has been managing for 12 years.

And Murphy has 2 years of playoff results, so just one first round exit, not two.

Oh my bad, bro. I thought it was Murphy’s 4th year, bro. Point still stands though, bro. Murphy hasn’t done any more than Counsell ever did.

Murphy is great, but I don’t know why we have to pretend he has done anything more magical than Counsell did in the postseason for us. Losing a WC and then getting whipped in a NLCS (after narrowly avoiding history after blowing a 2-0 NLDS lead) doesn’t feel ‘looser’.

Hopefully, in a week we are celebrating a second NLCS appearance. But as it stands? This isn’t any better than Counsell’s first few postseason appearances after he made the team an annual contender.

Evidently you don't follow the Cubs chat rooms because the consensus is: After Counsell signed a record-setting managerial contract with the Cubs ahead of the 2024 season.  Come to find out we got a guy who treated October like it was optional. David Ross did more with far less. : By i am Cubsessed

Certainly Counsell has set the bar low and as much as I like to think Murphy will clear it I don’t think anyone would have predicted Counsell to come up a game short of the WS and then proceed to not win another playoff series again (to date).

Hopefully in a week Murphy has a second NLCS trip under his belt.

I dont support a regular season trophy.

After googling, both the NHL and NBA do have regular season trophies. Of course they are not the big ones, though...

Why would Counsell not have Holmes pitch at all in this series? Isn’t he their best starter?

He was awful in September.  8.24 ERA, same number of walks as strikeouts.  Maybe they saw those 4 starts and were like we'll use him in game 3 if we have to but we have to actually get to game 3 first.

I'm not sure post-season success has all that much to do with the manager.

Looks like Murph can continue with his underdog persona:

Perhaps the Brewers should be considered the objective underdogs in the NLDS. Including their wild-card sweep, the Padres have gone an MLB-best 43-18 since July 24. That stretch includes a three-game sweep of the Brewers in August. Now, the Padres look even stronger than they did then. Their offense blends power and speed, experience and youth. Their bullpen is the deepest in the sport. Their rotation is relatively shallow, but it features Michael King, who is coming off seven innings of one-hit ball, and the fiercely competitive Nick Pivetta. And most importantly, a two-game sweep means every San Diego pitcher will go into the next series on at least two days’ rest. Yes, the Brewers will begin that series with home-field advantage. On paper, at least, the Padres possess a clear edge in firepower.
