Diamondbacks claim 3B Jeff Cirillo off waivers

Diamondbacks claimed IF Jeff Cirillo off waivers from the Twins.

For a team that's still in contention, the Twins sure don't act like it. Losing Luis Castillo and Cirillo won't crush their chances by any means, but it's still odd for a team within striking distance of a playoff spot to part with veteran hitters when their offense needed more help to begin with. Cirillo will serve as a bench bat for the Diamondbacks.

I had missed that he had even got waived. I find it shocking that he wasn't given playing time in place of the incomparably bad Nick Punto. He's not pirannah enough, apparently.

Hmm, I also had missed that he was DFA'd. Or was this one of those where the Twins were sending him through waivers like teams do with old guys in August and the D'Backs claimed him and the Twins just figured they may as well let him go and save the money?

I also see that the D'Backs claimed Byung-Hyun Kim off waivers from the Marlins. Hmm, they're making some moves, aren't they? Kim is a guy I've liked for awhile, but his arm just hasn't been the same since he got hurt late in 2003. I keep hoping he'll get some arm strength back eventually (he's only 28 ), but who knows?

Why was Kim DFA'd, last I knew he was pitching nicely.

They werent DFA'd they were placed on waivers just 90% of the majors. I would imagine everyone on the Brewers sans Prince, Braun and Yovanni were put on waivers. This just means that those teams have to either trade those players to the Diamond backs or waive them for nothing.

That's what I thought too. I guess what probably happened is that the D'Backs claimed him when the Marlins tried to get him through waivers and the Marlins decided to let him go and shed his salary.

Good luck to Jeff! I cant believe Minnesota gave up on him. Kim going back to where he was such a dominate closer for a few years. It would be nice to see Cirillo help the Dbacks win the West.

I think it's noteworthy just because it's been awhile since I can remember any teams making substantial waiver claims in August for years. I'll proceed to open up a can of worms and ask if some other team claimed Suppan to try and block would you let him go? Would you wait until later in August when Sheets was closer to waive him and hope?

Cirillo has gotten zero respect in Minnesota. Sports Radio was cheering that he was finally gone today. They needed a starting third baseman this year and he isn't that right now. It's good to see him in the National League again.

This just means that those teams have to either trade those players to the Diamond backs or waive them for nothing.

Or they can rescind the waiver and keep the player, but he must stay on the team for the remainder of the season.

Considering his line so far this year has been .261/.327/.386, he hasn't exactly earned a whole lot of respect. Not as bad as Punto, but not real good either.

I'd guess Cirillo would be pretty close to as good or better than Dillon for the rest of the year. I would love to see him in a Brewers uni again, and I think they could have fit him on the roster. Oh well.

He might get a little more playing time with the dbacks at least he will be in a playoff hunt. Also karma with the pick up of kim?

He's completely useless against righties and can't play on a regular basis, not really a lot to love for a team like the Twins. He makes much more sense in a role with a playoff team.

A 37-year-old with a .327 OBP and a .386 SLG who can't play everyday... meh. I'll take my chances with the guy with the 1.010 OPS in AAA, even if he is 32. Even if their production would be the same through the rest of the season, the upside with Dillon is far better and it can reap future benefits in that it could entice better minor league free agents to sign with the Brewers, because it shows that if you have a great season and the opportunity becomes available there is a chance you will get rewarded.

 

Besides, I'm pretty sure that the move was made before Cirillo was put through waivers, so at that point there was no going back.

I wouldn't doubt if the D-Backs just made a claim to block another NL West team from making a trade for them. Of course, as a result, they got stuck with them. It happens.

 

I still remember the year San Diego made a claim on Randy Myers (1998 I believe) that the Padres made a claim to block Atlanta from acquiring him in a trade with Toronto. But since he made so much money ($10 M +) the Blue Jays said, "he's yours. Thanks for taking him off our hands."

The DBacks also got Joe Kennedy on a waiver claim. Cirillo, Kim and Kennedy - very interesting.
