Dotel, Gagne, Riske, Percival, no closer trades likely

Looks like Riske could be a Brewer very soon. The deal would be around 3 year, $18-20 Mil with an option for a 4th year.

Yikes.

That is a lot of money. If they are going to pay Riske that much, they should just make him their closer. I mean honestly, anyone can close, as long as they are a veteran that knows how to handle pressure and knows how to get over blowing a ballgame. Riske has good stats...I don't see why he can't become a cheap closer.

Should we believe that site?

Unknown at this point, B2k. To be fair, though, it seems Riske has been a logical target for some time now. I'd be happy to have him, even to the point where a 3rd year on a deal wouldn't worry me.

jjfan, ERA+ is a stat that accounts for Park Factor. So a guy pitching in PetCo will be factored differently from one pitching in Coors.

PF, I know he's a good RP, but I find it odd that his FIP/xFIP don't really match his other numbers. At this point, it appears that he either has figured out how to succeed through a manner for which FIP doesn't account, or he's had some real nice defensive help behind him - but I'm not sure there, since his GB rate is nowhere near high.

Also, the two years where he's over 190 (ERA+) are the two where he had ridiculously lucky strand rates. Outside of that, good but not great.

Riske has always had a very strong LOB% which is why his ERA is good. I assume that is a skill since he does it year in and year out so I wouldn't be too worried about it.

Ennder, what's generally considered an average LOB%? Riske seems to hover around or north of 75%, which obviously seems strong.

This year the average was just above 70%, basically the same for 2006, about 72% in 2005.

Thought people interested in Riske might want to read this.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

Good news about Riske, pending official word and the details. On the other hand, looks like Percival is indeed heading to Tampa.

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin was willing to give free agent reliever Troy Percival a one-year deal. But, even at age 38, Percival wanted a two-year deal.

"He'll get a two-year deal," Melvin predicted Wednesday after the Jason Kendall press conference at Miller Park.

Melvin was right. Reports have surfaced that Percival is on the verge of signing a two-year, $8 million deal with Tampa Bay with escalators that could take it to $10 million.

Melvin couldn't see giving that kind of money over two years to a 38-year-old reliever with a significant injury history. Can't say I blame him. Do you?

That's the kind of good news I hope to enjoy hearing. Thanks for posting that, dpapo.

Thanks trwi7, I didn't realize you were just guesstimating. I know about Fan Graphs, but I thought you had the literal numbers of what the averages have been. In any event, cool!

I don't think arbitration being offered would have made much of a deal, as I'm all but certain he's not a type A.

Now Michael Barrett could be interesting, though.

Joe Nathan news

The Brewers plan to have David Riske setting up games for whichever closer they can land, whether it is Eric Gagne or Joe Nathan. They plan to start with Joe Nathan in hopes of prying him away from the Twins. It will cost them though because Nathan was dominant yet again for the Twins. The Brewers would probably have to include Rickie Weeks, along with Carlos Villanueva, and maybe another prospect. I do not think that is too much to ask for. Second base is the easiest position to fill on the field. They could easily sign David Eckstein to play second base and then they are a much better team. They have enough pitching to part with Villanueva, and Weeks has not been all that impressive in his time with the Brewers, but has shown improvement. If the Brewers want to push into the playoffs above the Cubs and Cardinals, they will need to improve their bullpen and look to sign an outfielder.
