I Am Legend

Just got back from a midnight showing of I Am Legend. It was pretty good and I recommend it. Will Smith manages to fit a lot of humor into the film.... "I was saving that bacon" was the best line of the movie. There were parts where the entire audience was so anxious.... people couldn't stop squirming in their seats. I love going to midnight openings!

 

There were previews for The Dark Knight, Semi-Pro, 10,000 BC and one other.... I was upset there wasn't a preview for Walk Hard.

I watched the HBO sneak peek thing. It seems like the concept of the movie is neat, but like Rluz said, it seemed to focus on zombie action instead of the personal struggle.

Thats what the book is about. A man suvives a biological attack while everyone not dead turns into vampire like creatures.

This trailer makes it look like a very interesting plot fucusing on one man's solitude with the teaser of finding out what happened to everyone else.? All it apparently turns out to be is 28 Days Later, Part II.? Been there, done that.?Don't get me wrong, I'll probably end up watching it but the trailers looked like it could have been so much more.

the trailers do a bad job explaining the situation. It is mirror of how "monsters" feel in stories. He is the only one left of his kind, fighting and killing the vampire people who view him as the monster.

 

This is also the 4th time this movie has been made.

I completely disagree with some of the reviews listed. I picked up a lot of personal struggle that Will Smith displayed well. You can see him struggle to cope with the events that were laid out in the plot.... and at the end when there's no hope at all and there's a discovery.... his pleading was so sincere.

 

Most of the movie was dedicated to showing how he tried to live his life without personal interaction.

It's Will Smith -- They probably watched some of his movies, or listened to his Rap music.

Right -- It's the common thread in zombie movies -- Every zombie movie has a point where the viewer comes to the realization that as bad as the zombies behave, they probably function as a community better than humans.

 

I was thinking of starting a "If you were a zombie, which Brewers' brain would you target" thread. -- but it would have probably gotten locked.

I always feel bad for zombies. I mean they are just trying to get a meal and people go and kill them.

I'm down with the zombies. I'd rather be one of them then a Cubs fan. Zombies strike me as a lot brighter.

I believe "Omega" & "Legend" are both adaptations of the same novel.

The slow zombie really is screwed. I mean honestly, how hard would it be to get away from a slow lumbering zombie no matter it's unreal strength. It'd be like playing tag with your grandparents, they sure can't going to catch you.

 

Now the recent fast zombie (28 days and what not) that's an entirely different story.

I believe "Omega" & "Legend" are both adaptations of the same novel.

 

The Last Man on Earth, The Omega Man, and I Am Legend are all adaptations of the book I Am Legend. Their was also a direct to video movie that was an adaptation and Night of the Comet is clearly influenced by it as well.

I haven't read it, but the novel I Am Legend by Richard Matheson is well regarded as a genre classic. One of these days I'm going to pick up that book. Other than that book, Matheson is probably most famous for writing several episodes of The Twilight Zone, most notably "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet".

I actually think that the best acted scene by Will Smith was his second trip to the video store where his brokenness is really exposed. Additionally, the film did a fine job of relaying the sense of extreme isolation. To write the film off as "just a zombie movie" doesn't do it justice.

The book is outstanding Robert. One of my favorite sci-fi/horror novels. I can't recommend it enough. Wish I could say the same for the latest film.

Completely agree Ando. For those of you passing judgement on this film without seeing it are making a major gaffe. I grew up in a movie theater, seeing virtually every movie shown there since 1982, this is the first time I've been in a theater with more than a handful of people watching a movie where NO ONE left for snacks or the bathroom during the entire showing. The isolation was well portrayed and Will Smith did a terrific job in this film and this is coming from someone who hasn't liked many of his performances.

I went tonight and was suprised by the amount of people that came out to see it. There were actually people sitting on the stairs. I personally loved nearly all of the movie. Will Smith gives a terrific performance as he is basically the only human for most of the movie. The ending to me would be how Micheal Bay would end this film. Without giving too much away, a small child could figure out how the ending could have worked out better. For a movie that is pretty smart for nearly the entire time, the ending is very dumb. I experienced the same thing as TFS with no one leaving the theater. New York with all the CGI plant growth, animals, etc. is worth going to see the movie for. Just be prepared to exit the theater with a sense of unfulfillment.
