  1. I would just like to point out that Gamel never said he didn't like playing 1B. He offered up a very vanilla answer in an interview saying something to the effect that 1B is harder than it looks and he has a lot of respect for the guys who play that position. His humble answer was put into a blog post by Hardicourt that made it seem like he didn't want to play 1B. When asked about it, Hardicourt said his body language indicated he didn't like playing first, but Mat is a typical kid in that he doesn't get excited or show much emotion. Personally, I think he would be thrilled to play any position if it meant he would finally get a real chance in the bigs.
  2. While this is true, most of the good and knowledgable Cubs fans I know (I live in Wriggleyvill so I know a lot of good and bad ones) are perfectly willing to admit that the Cubs fanbase as a whole is very unknowledgable. Wriggley is still mostly a beer garden. Last year me and my friend (also a Brewer fan) were in a drinking game at a house party near Belmont with a bunch of Cubs fans. During a segment of categories we went deeper than everyone else at naming players on their roster. Most bowed out when they couldn't go beyond Marmol in their bullpen or when they named players who hadn't been on the team for a year or two. These are the same people who will defend their team and say they this is their year. Yea, that happens with Brewers fans, but it is much more prevalent with Cubs fans in my experience having lived among both fanbases.
  3. Much more often than not it doesn't work out like this. The rare instance of Belly having a better season doesn't change the fact that it is much more likely Betancourt continues to Quevedo his way out of baseball.
  4. He could tremendously improve his value by moving a year closer to free agency.
  5. Take them to a game in the bleachers at Wriggley as soon as you can. Yea, they will probably be scared for life but you wont have to worry about them being Cubs fans.
  6. I think that makes the most sense. My understanding at the time was that they were trying to get their two pitchers onto the roster in a season with the dead weight hanging over them. After dumping Hall and Soups contracts they could pay it back. I don't know how they could put it off to 2013.
  7. Anyone know how much of Wolf's deferred salary from last year he gets this year? If its around $4 mil, that puts up back up to $86 and removes some of that wiggle room.
  8. Is it bad that my first thought was to make the segment into a drinking game based off of the number of "you know"s.
  9. Chris, Duke sucks! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif That aside, best of luck to you and I will miss watching you pitch for the Brewers. I can't imagine what you have been through twice to get back to pitching in the big leagues. Tons of respect.
  10. I have nothing to back up this opinion besides a gut feeling, but i really feel like Gallardo is going to be better this coming season than his last two seasons which were pretty good in themselves. Less walks from Yovani leading to him going deeper into games and an ERA in the 3.00-3.25 range. If so, with health among our rotation, Gallardo could hit the 200 innings mark, Greinke should be over 200, Wolf has thrown 200 plus innings in back to back years, and Marcum threw 195 innings last year. There is a lot to back it up, like Yo's 3.02 FIP last season. The problem is that the defense has probably gotten worse, but I do agree that having some pressure off him will help. For what its worth, I expect his wins to increase as well since the BP should be more rested as you said. He also wont have those starts where he needs to pitch 6+ innings no matter what because the guy before him came out in the 3rd inning. The importance of that cannot be overstated.
  11. On this board pointing to semantics is usually a sign someone is in a pointless debate with you. Everyone gets his point, including you. If you want to chastise posters for embellishment in attempts to diminish what players have done why not look at posters saying Gamel has done nothing at the MLB level.
  12. His PitchFX numbers were all over the place last year. He was definetly working on stuff as opposed to trying to get a low ERA. And Greinke doesn't just strike me as a pitcher who might decide to strike out the side then do it. He strikes me as a pitcher who might decide to strike out the side using only 50 mph curveballs, then do it.
  13. It comes up in every Gamel thread, which comes up like every other day.
  14. Villanueva and Parra also looked like awesome starting pitchers in September callups. I wouldn't read to much into anything done in September. They were also given fair opportunities to start in the Brewers rotation. That's where Rogers is headed. The Brewers 2008 rotation had Sheets, Soup, then nothing after Yo got hurt. That situation has absolutely nothing to do with this year.
  15. I didn't read it that way. And speaking of minutiae... For whatever it's worth, Drew Olson's comment about Betancourt on 540 ESPN this afternoon was along the lines of: "The people I talk to, who get paid to watch Royals games, say he's one of the worst players they've ever seen." "Who get paid to watch Royals games" is a lot more informative than "those who watch them." For all we know that could mean his family and friends.
  16. I didn't read it that way. And speaking of minutiae...
  17. Anyone who can comment on the new Assasin's Creed? BTW, I can't say enough about GT5. Awesome game.
  18. This is a pretty funny interview. Definitely quirky. Reminds me a lot of the Ben Sheets interviews. Without listening I am guessing thats the interview where he talks about crying in bed and screaming "WHY?" after Brad Pitt and Jennifer Anniston broke up. Hilarious stuff. Sometimes I think he is serious though too. Its like he doesn't really get white lies or irony. In that instance I am pretty sure he was trying to be funny, but some of the stuff he does with fellow players is just crazy...in an endearing way.
  19. "Cliff Narveson" gave me a laugh. He seems to have us as 3rd best in the division still. I don't think he really knows what he is talking about, but time will tell.
  20. An improvement over being bad the previous two years. Don't sugarcoat the numbers, he has been a below average defender and that has been backed up by other accounts.
  21. He makes it sound like the PTBNL could be Rogers.
  22. I just want to say I am finding a lot of new music from the past year that I didn't hear previously from this thread. Just a suggestion, but if you are going to talk about an album you think a lot of people might not know about, it would be helpful to say what kind of music it is, who they remind you of, or just describe it a little. Lots of new stuff for me, so it would be a huge time saver!
  23. Oh, how could I forget Broken Bells came out this year. Now that I have time, my top albums would be: 1. Black Keys - Brothers 2. Broken Bells - Broken Bells Then in no particular order, Sufjan Stevens - The Age of Adz Vampire Weekend - Contra Spoon - Transference Das Racist - Sit Down, Man The New Pornographers - Together Sufjan Stevens - All Delighted People EP Atmosphere - To All My Friends, Blood Makes The Blade Holy The National - High Violet Interpol - Interpol Most disappointing - Gorillaz - Plastic Beach
  24. I think its pretty obvious that Matt Stairs can no longer be killed by conventional weaponry.
