  1. We get to see him play 162 games a year, plus spring training and whatever other practices they have, so if he does sit on the couch for the 3 months not accounted for (which I doubt), it is rest his body probably needs. I don't think you have to worry if he is getting enough exercise. I just don't agree that his life is in danger, his body is built that way. My wife and I talked to him up close in Minnesota last season when he wasn't in his baggy uniform and in street clothes, and yes he is short and large, but its not like his belly is hanging over his belt, he is a very strong looking man. I think a lot of this is overreaction because he had a down year last season. I don't mind people saying his knees won't hold up, or that his frame will have something to do w/ slowing his career down, but I think it is nonsense to assume that he is going to die an early death because of his size.
  2. He has always been big, he is a very strong man and is very athletic for his size, its not like he is just a fat guy that sits on his couch all day, he is a professional athlete. I just don't appreciate you predicting a guys early death, just to prove that you think another baseball player has more upside. That is totally uncalled for.
  3. Where are you located?
  4. Why would you write this? IMO, that is just plain wrong on a couple different levels.
  5. I think w/ him being a great rightfielder, and a lefty bat w/ great on base ability, he would be a very good fit. Here are a few reasons I don't think it would take Corey Hart. First of all, the ages, Giles 38, Hart 26. Second, the contract situations, Giles has 1 year and 11 million after the 2 million trade kicker, and Corey is entering his first year of arby. I also think that Corey Hart is worth a lot more coming off an all-star appearance, and two 20/20 seasons, if you look at his stats, it seems like the end of 2008 is a fluke. I could see us giving up a Periard/Braddock type pitching prospect and TGJ to get it done, the only thing is I'm not sure Giles would accept a trade to Milwaukee, since we were on his original no trade list.
  6. Why is it a guarantee that the Cubs will win the division? Is the Cubs talent level really that much better? Lets wait and see what happens this off-season before we declare the Cubs division champs.
  7. IMO the main thing that gives Hardy more value is the fact that he is a good shortstop and Young is an average corner outfielder. Another thing is that Hardy is considered to be a great clubhouse presence, and from what I've read Delmon Young is considered to have a really bad attitude.
  8. I haven't heard anything about Chone Figgins being on the block at all.
  9. What I don't understand is why the Twins won't trade one of Liriano, Baker or Slowey for Hardy? They just traded a guy with just as much upside in Matt Garza last off-season for Delmon Young. IMO J.J. Hardy has more value than Delmon Young even w/ the contract situation.
  10. I think its great that we got a guy w/ that kind of experience as our bench coach, I really like how our staff is looking.
  11. I was just looking at the VWL stats, and I've noticed some things: Brendan Katin is absolutely raking in his first 67 Ab's, he is in the top 10 w/ a 1.103 OPS, and is leading the league w/ 10 HR's, next closest has 6. He is also 2nd in RBI, the bad part is his 19/5 k/bb ratio.. Hernan Iribarren is still doing very well w/ a .961 OPS Alcides Escobar has a .451 OPS through 56 Ab's. Tony Gwynn Jr is batting .314 w/ a .751 OPS through 70 AB's. Indians farmhand Matt LaPorta has a .549 OPS throug 67 AB's.
  12. As a 21 year old in 460 major league Ab's Melky Cabrera had a line of .280/.360/.391, and in 122 AAA ab's that year had a 385/.430/.566, so he had at least one good year. He had a decent 07', w/ a .273/.327/.391, but last year he really dropped off w/ a 249/.301/.341 line. I noticed that his BABIP was down to .271 last year, and you'd have to think that the Yankees might have rushed him a little bit. I think he is young enough, and has shown enough to be optimistic about, I wouldn't mind the Brewers getting him as one of the players in the deal. If we could somehow get Ian Kennedy and Melky Cabrera for Cameron, which I doubt could happen, I would jump on that in a second.
  13. I would like to see Villanueva given a chance to be the closer, he was dominant last year after moving to the bullpen.
  14. I think the reason his value is low is mostly because of his contract, why would they trade Vazquez for a guy that makes more money, is older, and is a worse pitcher? I would love to get him for Bill Hall and a prospect, if they would do it. I think Vazquez would be a great addition to the staff.
  15. I am very bored at work, and I was just thinking of different options to make our lineup better. First off, I would sign Adam Dunn, who I think is the most underrated FA, to a 4 year deal in the 60 million dollar range. This would mean Braun would be moved to RF. The next thing would be to trade for Brian Roberts and try to get Melvin Mora in the deal. I'm not sure what Baltimore would want back for these two, but by signing Dunn and trading for Brian Roberts it would make Hart and Weeks available, so a package of one of those two and prospects would be the deal. So the new lineup is: 2b Roberts ss Hardy LF Dunn RF Braun 1B Fielder 3B Mora CF Cameron C Kendall This would probably give us very little to no extra money to spend on pitching, and we would likely still need a bp arm and starting pitcher. So Melvin would have to be a little creative. He would however have Hart or Weeks, whoever he didn't trade to Baltimore, to use in a deal.
  16. I hope thats true, I think this team would take a dramatic step back if Fielder is traded. I'm not sure how you can replace him in the lineup.
  17. Penny had an injury filled 08', but he was a very good pitcher in 07' going 16-4 with a 3.03 ERA in 208 IP. He would be a pretty good pickup if he got healthy.
  18. A little off subject, but what does everyone think of the Iverson for Billups, McDyess and Samb deal that just happened? I don't really like it for either team, but I'd say this gives Iverson a better chance to go to the finals if he can gel w/ the Pistons. Also long term, this will clear a lot of cap space for Detroit.
  19. I don't think its as much about a hatred for Gwynn, as much as it is not wanting a starting CF who had a .659 OPS in his 3rd season in AAA. Whats strange to me is how so many people don't understand why he isn't being considered as our starting CF.
  20. That was a big win at MSG against the Knicks after losing the home opener, Prince Luc looked good again, man that guy is very good defensively. Altough the Knicks still don't look very good w/ D'antoni as there coach, they have a pretty bad roster.
  21. Mark Loretta would be a nice reserve infielder, he definitely brings more to the table offensively. He wouldn't be as good defensively as Counsell, and is right handed, but is still a good 2nd baseman, and can handle the other infield positions decently.
  22. A guy that I would like to sign to be our backup 1b/3b/Corner Outfield would be Doug Mientkewicz he quietly put up some good numbers in 285 ab's w/ the Pirates last year 277/.374/.379 w/ a 44 walks and 28 K's. He also batted .326 as a pinch hitter, and played pretty good defense at all three positions.
