  1. Stearns has only had four drafts, so still kind of early to tell one way or another how he has done. Sure, Ray is looking like a bad pick at #5 in 2016, but we still got Burnes, Feliciano, Z Brown, Erceg & Henry for guys that still have varying degrees of chances at being possible future contributors. Hiura has already paid dividends from 2017 & you've still got plenty of interesting guys in Lutz, Francis, Bettinger, Lazar, Ward & File. For 2018 Turang had a solid first season all around then there's Ashby, Rasmussen & Andrews who have already had some success plus HS guys like Bello & Gray with plenty of promise. Obviously way too early to pass judgement on 2019, but Small & Kelly definitely showed out in their small samples. It also seems like we've made strides in the international market since Stearns took over, but of course that will take even longer to maybe bear any fruit.
  2. Thanks for the first hand account, Steve. Always nice to have that sort of context. Stearns & company have been pretty decent mining guys from other organizations that were blocked for whatever reason & just needed an opportunity. Hopefully JP is another such case.
  3. There are 182 players with at least 1,500 plate appearances since 2016. Arcia ranks 177th in WAR (0.1), the five guys worse than him are Kendrys Morales, Albert Pujols, Victor Martinez, Gerardo Parra & Chris Davis. At least Orlando is cheap!! In 176th place, with 0.3 WAR, I'm not making this up, is Alcides Escobar. He's still just 25, I guess. That play he made yesterday was insane. With a barren SS market (unless we could pry Story from Colorado, which is prolly a pipe dream) I'm guessing he's back for 2020 & we'll just have to cross our fingers he finally figures it out. It literally can't get much worse.
  4. Dubon has started 7 games for SF so far. His first three he hit 200/200/400. His last four he hit 462/462/1077. Mauricio has been killing it for four whole games. He also has yet to walk in 25 MLB PAs.
  5. Sometimes leadoff walks score, sometimes they make it to 2nd or 3rd, sometimes they stay at 1st the whole inning & sometimes they get doubled up or picked off.
  6. I thought the exact same thing; I had to remind myself that wasn't a pitcher batting. I have yet to figure out why so many guys come out of the farm system with messed up mechanics. Who are the others you are thinking of, besides the 30 year old joyrneyman catcher currently with his 7th organization in 10 professional seasons?
  7. If Grandal really hit that 442 feet like they just said, I bet Fritos coulda hit it 500+ easy.
  8. We don't know that Stearns let Johnson go. Reports at the time were we made a competitive offer. Maybe DJ just wanted to be closer to home/family & no amount of money would have kept him in Milwaukee. Studies have shown that performance with RISP is mostly random in any given year. I don't believe our front office would fire Haines for something they likely view as largely out of his control. Our farm system is so barren because we traded multiple highly ranked prospects who've yet to amount to anything for the best player in the NL the last two seasons. We've also recently graduated already MLB contributors (Hiura, Woodruff, Houser) & hopeful future MLB contributors (Grisham, Burnes, Peralta). Since Stearns got here we have won the 9th most games in MLB. His first three seasons we massively overachieved expectations. As much as many might paint this season as some huge disappointment, we are still within the range of most likely outcomes based on preseason projections, which considering all the things that went wrong this year means the organization as a whole has actually fared pretty well in my estimation... BPro: 88 wins Vegas: 86.5 wins 538: 86 wins ZIPS: 85 wins Current Pace: 83 wins OOTP: 83 wins
  9. Fritos forcing the Cubs to burn a mound visit. Respect.
  10. Too bad FREITAS is seven letters.
  11. I've always been pretty high on Stokes (had him #7 on my pre-season ballot behind only Hiura, Ray, Brown, Lutz, Turang & Houser), but he's pretty much limited to LF only with his arm so a much better fit for an AL club that can also get him DH PAs. Considering he's like 7th/8th on the organizational OF depth chart at the moment it's nice to see him go somewhere he'll have much more opportunity. Hope he makes the most of it.
  12. If our pitching staff continues to not allow any runs I think we will win a lot of games.
  13. Run differential is telling, but as we know run scoring is heavily dependent upon sequencing, which is somewhat out of the team's control, so sometimes referred to as "luck". A team gets a walk, single, double & HR in an inning. How many runs did they score? Could be anywhere from one through four depending on the order in which the events happened. What BaseRuns does is look at each individual outcome throughout a team's season to predict how many runs they "should" have scored/allowed given neutral sequencing. By this method our "expected" Runs Scored per game is 5.09 vs 4.74 actual. Our "expected" Runs Allowed per game is 5.00 vs 5.04 actual. BaseRuns thinks we "should" have played to a 68-65 record so far, which is exactly what we've done.
  14. Yeah, that whole "trading four prospects who have amounted to diddly squat so far for the best player in the NL on a team friendly deal" was a real head scratcher from Stearns.
  15. The days on the active roster will be why he graduates. Think Grisham will still maintain prospect eligibility as long as he doesn't get to 130 ABs, because September days don't count towards the 45 day limit... “A player shall be considered a rookie unless, during a previous season or seasons, he has (a) exceeded 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues; or (b) accumulated more than 45 days on the active roster of a Major League club or clubs during the period of 25-player limit (excluding time in the military service and time on the disabled list).”
  16. Generally agree with this. At various points different posters have bemoaned our underachieving offense, our terrible pitching, the substandard work of the coaches in charge of each of those areas, Counsell's management, Stearns moves or lack thereof, our cheap owner, our negative run differential, etc, etc. Yet here we are at 66-62, just a couple two tree games out of the postseason. Someone somewhere along the line must have done something right.

  19. Santana 2019: -15 DRS | -15.7 UZR | -13 OAA Gamel 2019: +4 DRS | +2.5 UZR | +1 OAA These numbers aren't close either.
  20. I think the least intrusive way to speed up games is to just go to three ball walks, two pitch strkeouts. Plus, it would add a nice wrinkle when singing Take Me Out To The Ballgame... ...for it's ONE, TWO, (silence) strikes yer out, at the old ballgame.
  21. I think Lutz is the highest ranked guy they'd consider trading just because he falls into that nexus of A) being one of the few guys we have that other organizations might actually value highly & 2) is somewhat expendable given our OF is relatively set in the near term.
  22. Just a couple of 23 year old Hahvahd guys slumming it in A+... 133 IP | 3.52 ERA | 6.9 K9 | 1.6 BB9 | 0.5 HR9 | 8.7 H9 124 IP | 3.63 ERA | 7.0 K9 | 2.6 BB9 | 0.8 HR9 | 9.1 H9 Granted, Suter is a lefty, which certainly helps, but Noah's performance was right in line with his fellow Cambridge man.
  23. Last year, on August 23rd, the Milwaukee Brewers were 3.5 games out of first place. They ended up one game away from the World Series.
