Ya if your expectation was Skubal, this is certainly disappointing. im disappointed we didn’t get Skubal, but I do think the moves we made today will help weather the rest of the regular season and there’s a decent chance the 3 pitchers we got all make the playoff roster.

My thought process was that Frias was the high upside guy with massive exit velocities, but still a ways off. Might be a guy, but could also end up a bust. ragsdale more of a high floor guy. Having a massive year. Similar timeline as Adamczewski and Payne, but probably the lesser prospect of the group. Felt lower ceiling and more redundant than Frias. who knows though. I won’t claim to be an expert. I just read the scouting reports and occasionally tune into a game.

Seems like a pretty reasonable low cost trade. Not exciting, but some middle relief reinforcements were needed.

Ya that last point is the real kicker. It’s pretty clear the Brewers internal evaluation of Frias isn’t as high as say the me just put out there by Fangraphs last week. that’s what I need to remind myself of. The brewers are good at this and they know more than I do or anyone who is putting out publicly available prospect evaluations.

Yup, this is pretty painful. I’m ok with trading away Ragsdale. Frias is a player I would’ve wanted to keep. That’s a tough one.

At first glance I like this move better than I thought I would when looking at names over the last month or so. I probably discounted it thinking the cardinals wouldn’t sell, but they’ve been kinda stinky lately so it’s not surprising to see them sell off some players. we even traded for an injured pitcher, a brewers time honored tradition. im sure the players we gave up will sting a little bit.

As much as the rational fan in me thought “hey skubal is the only guy worth trading meaningful prospects for and now that our biggest competitor added him instead we might as well sit this one out”… I’m getting antsy. Give me an injured pitcher to dream on at least. 😂

Even if it was inevitable, it’s hard for me to not feel disappointed. I guess I prefer him going to the Dodgers than the Braves, Cubs, or Phillies. We will still have a tough path to even see a match up with LA.

I understand where you’re coming from. I even wanted the brewers to adopt the snell/Glasnow strategy with woodruff this year. Just get him to the playoffs healthy. but the bigger issue is that they’re able to pay $100m for ohtani, snell, and Glasnow and not need them to contribute to the regular season rotation because they’re so deep and they have very little competition in their division.

I think he'll be remembered fondly as a solid role player. He really filled in admirably during Mitchell IL stints. I hope he can hit a little bit more for Cleveland and stick around the league for a few more years.

I think this is the main motivation for the move. maybe they also think they could turn Naylor around a little bit, but I think that’s secondary to having a 3rd healthy catcher on the 40 man they can stash in AAA. as for Yoho, it was pretty clear the Brewers weren’t quite as enamored with him as us fans. Too bad we never saw him get a long term shot. I hope he finds success with Cleveland. The other 2 guys in the trade don’t mean much.

This might be a reasonable proposal. Obviously Peña is a well regarded prospect across the board. Positional fit and timing of big league readiness possibly make him redundant and/or far enough away from his debut that I could stomach his inclusion. Fischer is a bit of a boom/bust prospect. Prodigious power, but scary whiff rate. I don’t mind trading him, but I kinda feel like he’s undervalued here. ragsdale, I could live with selling high on him. He’s having a great season and is possibly positionally redundant if he’s on a similar timeline as Adamczewski. moneys… I don’t mind in theory trading this type of prospect, I just don’t want to trade away this particular lottery ticket. overall, this package would hurt. If you subbed out Fischer and added Adams or Burke I think I’d be ok.

Obviously some differentiating factors between these trades and a theoretical Skubal trade. If we were putting together a comparable package with our current player group you’re probably looking at something like Peña + 2-3 other interesting prospects.

TBF, minor leaguers in general are running wild. Freaking Blake Burke has 25 steals lol. That certainly isn’t going to translate to being a SB threat in the bigs. But I agree with the overall point that Quero is likely expendable.

I think this is a totally reasonable perspective. And maybe actually shifted my thought process on pursuing him. this is a unique situation that rarely ever comes up. One of the best 3-4 SP in all of baseball is available and we likely have the players to get a deal done. Literally any team can use an ace level pitcher. Skubal is the type of player who could single handedly increase our odds of winning a World Series due to his role and skill. im not expecting it to happen and I’ve even said in other comments that I probably wouldn’t want to give up what it would take to get him. However, as the deadline draws nearer and the likelihood of Skubal being traded increased… I can’t help but throw caution to the wind and change my tune of wanting to acquire him.

Ok perfect. Good to hear it’s just bumping everyone back a day. if we make some moves, Pannone is DFA fodder here after his start, but at least he got a call up and a big league paycheck

Since stallings is the corresponding move I’m hopeful that there’s no major injury concern with Drohan. I’m sure we will learn more before the game.

I actually think the best we can hope for is Detroit hanging on to him and Mize and those guys not getting traded to a different contender. If we face Detroit in the World Series I’ll live with it 😏

I wouldn’t trade Made. I probably wouldn’t trade Peña. I have a prospect crush on Adamczewski and would prefer to keep him. The rest of the prospects yet to make their debut I could probably be convinced individually are worth trading for Skubal. I don’t want to trade Henderson even though I understand the injury risk may be higher on him than our other pre-arb starters. I know you have to give something to get something, but I’m not sure the Brewers would be willing to give up a good enough centerpiece to make a deal. And my message board GM feeling is that I wouldn’t either.

I dont agree that Myers and Sproat were a wash in trade value at the time of the trade. from last year, the Dustin may trade may be a decent comp for a Freddy package. The Res Sox gave up Tibbs who has obviously had some helium since the trade, but he was still a pretty legitimate prospect at the time of the deal. I think if we end up trading for Freddy, the reaction on BF is going to be pretty negative on what it took to bring him back. personally, don’t think I’d want him back at this point. I just don’t think a Jett/Burke package is that bad.

I don’t necessarily feel inclined to defend the Jett/Burke package for Freddy since it wasn’t my idea. Worth noting, Jett Williams trade value has likely dropped since the time of the original trade as well since he’s struggled in AAA this year (I’m basing this on results alone, i haven’t dug into the batter ball profile at all). Burke to me is probably more valuable to the Brewers than he is in a trade. He’s not rule 5 eligible for another season and he’s in that mix of guys to play 1b/DH after we no longer have bauers, Vaughn, and slightly further out Yelich. We don’t need all of Burke, Fischer, and Adams to pan out. Similar to the OF situation a few years back with Frelick, Chourio, Weimer, and Mitchell. Hang onto all of them and hope you get a starting caliber player(s) emerge from the group. Ultimately power only 1b/DH types probably aren’t that valuable in a trade and that’s reflected in his FV rating (40+ according the fangraphs off-season prospect write up) I do think it’s highly unlikely the Brewers and Mets could agree on a trade package centered around Jett Williams. The optics of it would be bad for both sides and furthermore I’d guess the Brewers are higher on Jett than the Mets are and that’s probably partly why the trade got done in the first place. if we agree to a trade for Freddy, i don’t see it actually including Jett.

Dan Zymborski also pitched a Peralta to brewers trade: Blake Burke and Jett Williams as the package. I don’t actually hate this package. Williams hasn’t hit at AAA and Burke doesn’t have a vastly different skillset than Fischer. Burke may never be a starting caliber 1b/DH type at the mlb level. ultimately it only makes sense if the Brewers think they can get him back on track to a sub 4 era type starter the rest of the way.

My armchair GM/Manager feelings are mixed. Reasons to keep in in the rotation: 1. we have a 4 game lead over Atlanta on the 2 seed and developing sproat as a starter at the big league level is probably best long term. 2. we don’t currently have a healthy option who is better than sproat 3. he’s one of the few starters we have who could theoretically go a full seasons workload since he threw 142 innings last year between mlb and aaa. reasons to bounce him the the pen: 1. He’s not an option to start a playoff game in his current form, but might be able to help us in a relief role. Better to figure that out in the regular season than wing it in the playoffs 2. Ideally, Harrison will returns and to form soon and Misiorowski/Henderson remain healthy. If we acquire a SP by the deadline then we are looking at moving Gasser, Drohan, or Sproat to a relief role. Sproat has probably performed the worst as a starter of that group. I think ultimately I’d stick with him in the rotation for the time being, but acquisitions, overall pitching staff health, and the standings could quickly impact that.

I’m probably in the minority, but I don’t really mind him being the 4th outfielder. who knows what happens at the deadline. If the Brewers add a complementary bat who plays corner outfield, Lara may get optioned if Frelick returns at some point.

Man… I’ve generally not been bought in a trading for Skubal. I’ve mostly been skeptical that the Tigers will trade him however I think I’m coming around on the idea at this point. He’s been awesome this year since coming back from injury. His playoff performance has been every bit as good as his regular season performance. Even while playing better, the tigers just haven’t been able to truly get back into the playoff picture and have a bunch of teams to jump. Henderson scares me long term due to frequent injury issues. I’d hate to trade him, but if he’s the main piece for a Skubal trade, I think I’d get over it. Not sure really what a package would need to look like, but Henderson would have to be a pretty damn good centerpiece since he was a pretty highly ranked prospect who has done nothing but succeed at the mlb level so far. Henderson would hurt because he’s helping this years team so much, but if they went in for Skubal I’d have to imagine they make some other moves as well. (I’m not prepared to defend this. It’s just a gut feeling from a fan perspective and subject to change at any point lol)
