The Brewers tried using an indicator card in spring training to alert players if the situation warranted using a challenge or not, but the league said they couldn’t do that. I don’t see any reason that it couldnt be part of the third base coaches signs before each pitch. It doesn’t need to be a secret. All you need to do is alert the player that this count/situation/inning warrants a challenge if you have a called strike on you. I do think in general that the brewers strategy is to leave the challenges for the catcher.

Its funny, I find the 2028 opening day roster almost easier to predict than the 2027 roster. Catcher, third base, and first base are all tricky to predict. Especially with the CBA negotiations looming it’s hard to predict how active the trade market would be and how likely an extension for a guy like Made is to get done during the off season. By 2028 opening day I think we will know exactly where Made slots in defensively and will certainly be an everyday player by then. I would suspect that one of Adams, Burke, or Fischer has broken through and separated themselves as the future first baseman. Catcher, we will know whether Contreras was traded prior to his final year of team control and whether Quero has looked like a big leaguer. Even the rotation and outfield picture should have more clarity.

Brewers Acquire Lance McCullers Jr. From Astros

I’m not sure Fielder is a future big leaguer, but it was definitely fun to have him in the org and he was one of the guys I’d be checking on when looking at minor league box scores. -
Brewers Acquire Lance McCullers Jr. From Astros

Looks like we need 1 spot on the 40 man to complete the move. I’d guess a Zastryzny 60 day IL since he’s had another set back. I was just commenting yesterday that I don’t think the Brewers are to the point of needing an innings eater type, but I’d still be interested in a guy you’d trust to start a playoff game. well this move probably doesnt solve either of those scenarios. if we really are adding $6-7m in payroll for this move I don’t understand it from a fan perspective. Not my money, but I also realize what the brewers have historically spent on payroll. maybe one or both of these guys could be useful. McCullers feels like a shot in the dark hoping he can stay healthy and effective. The other guy feels like bullpen depth to replace McGee on the shuttle squad. -
I’m not totally sold on needing a 6th starter innings eater type quite yet. I think the group of starters we have he enough guys who can get us through the season. We also have some dead weight on the 40 man (Zastryzny, Baddoo and maybe even Koenig and Black) where if we needed to add an Erik fedde type off the Dfa scrap heap later in the season it wouldn’t be too difficult to accomplish. gasser, crow, Henderson, and sproat all need big league development at this point and have varying degrees of innings pitched in a single season. Let them develop in the big leagues as much as possible. I do think another starter, but one who you trust to face 18 batters in a playoff game is a need. Being down Woodruff and Priester, two guys you probably hoped would be playoff caliber SP this season, is pretty rough. I’d currently think Miz, Harrison, and Henderson are your top 3 playoff starters which would probably be enough if you could guarantee their health, but we can’t do that. So adding another starter to that playoff mix is a bigger priority to me than an innings eater type.

Trade Deadline Pitchers
long ball replied to BrewCrewBlueDevil's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
It’s really tough to predict which AL teams will be sellers and which ones will stand Pat/ buy. I think my main priority is wanting a starter who you’d be comfortable with starting a playoff game. We have enough depth options to get through the regular season IMO. Sonny gray is the guy I wanted, but if the Red Sox continue to play well they probably aren’t going to sell. I think you’ve put together a pretty good list of guys to consider and who may be available. I’m not really sure that the Angels should trade their guys, but who knows what they’d do. I like Mize, but I think the tigers hold onto their guys. I don’t want anyone expensive for next year (wacha). I’m not sure the blue jays or orioles sell. So that might leave us with Robbie Ray as a decent fit, but don’t look at his home/road splits. -
Welcome back old friend - Bryse Wilson to Brewers
long ball replied to Ron Robinsons Beard's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I sorta assume it’s a big league deal and he will fill the 8th man in the bullpen role. An arm that can give you some length if needed and they’re not scared to abuse if needed. I like him more than Woodford in that role, but that’s probably some rose colored glasses type feeling. -
I didn’t realize that Clay Holmes might not even be back from injury before the trade deadline. If that doesn’t scream Brewers trade target I’m not sure what does. I am starting to feel much more concerned about the rotation than I was 2 weeks ago. Woodruff is out. Harrison has the sore elbow. I think we can still feel ok about Miz, Harrison, and Henderson as our top 3 playoff starters, but adding a SP who could be an option in the playoffs is probably #1 on my wish list. If we make it to at least the NLCS, we probably bullpen a game where a 4th starter would be needed, but another playoff caliber SP gives us injury insurance.

Without doing much research, I’ll agree that sounds about right. probably more than the Brewers would want to allocate to a reliever, even if he’s the best reliever in the game.

A Ryan trade would be a little scary. The guys who can become free agents after 2027 make for an interesting risk. we don’t know what will come of the looming CBA negotiations. Will we lose games and if we do, how will that impact service time and contract status? now I don’t think we will lose games, but it would be a real bummer to trade a guy like Peña and more for Joe Ryan only to lose a bunch of the 2027 season. im also skeptical that we see these AL teams like the Tigers, Red Sox, or Twins sell. The league to date has been really soft and all it would take is a hit couple of weeks to move into playoff position.

The A’s got Leo Devries for Mason Miller last year. He’s still under team control through 2030. are we giving up Luis Peña + for Mason Miller who is going to get super expensive in arb? id love mason miller in our pen, but it’s not really the way this team should be operating.

What’s funny is at the time the original game was rained out and scheduled for yesterday I thought to myself “the cards are hit right now and playing much better than we are… by the time this game gets made up we are going to be playing better and they’re going to be playing closer to their pre season expectations.” played out just like that.

Luis Lara Called Up By Brewers To Make MLB Debut
long ball replied to Ewitkows1's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
If there’s ever a time to steal a couple starts by Frelick at third base it’s probably during a Misiorowski start when he’s going to strike out half the batters he faces anyway. -
Luis Lara Called Up By Brewers To Make MLB Debut
long ball replied to Ewitkows1's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
This is kinda my initial reaction to the move. We are butting up against the break. We don’t have another infielder on the 40 man. Add a bat for the rest of the week and take the break to assess how Hamilton is recovering and see if you need to make a 40 man move coming out of the break. -
Brewers (Drohan) vs Cardinals (May): 7/6/26, 6:45pm
long ball replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Archived Game Threads
Looks like May is coming off back to back clunkers. Hopefully we can make it a third. At the very least, hit him better than we did a few weeks ago. would be nice to get 5 or 6 IP from Drohan tonight since we didn’t get much from our starters vs Arizona. im really just hoping to go at least 4-4 this week and stay healthy going into the break. -
This feels about right to me too. Not trying to be pessimistic, but going slightly below .500 in this stretch to the allstar break makes sense to me. Then coming back after the break and playing better against a softer schedule makes sense to me I’ll also pick 14-12

How the Brewers navigate the season and the innings pitched for the whole rotation is something I’ve been thinking about basically since spring training. Obviously, Misiorowski is the crown jewel and needs to be treated as such. The rest of the rotation is pretty inexperienced too. heres the break down of innings pitched by the current crop of starters. First number is 2025 combined innings (minors, mlb, post season), second number being their career high in innings. woodruff 106.2/186.2 (2021) Patrick 166 Gasser 46.1/ 137 (2022) sproat 141.2 Henderson 103 Crow 50/128 (2022) Harrison 112/124.1 (2024) Drohan 54/123 (2023) would be nice to somehow come out of this season with all of these guys getting over 100 IP and healthy.

I don’t think Yoho is high up on the Murphy trust tree. koenig was about at the 30 day mark on his rehab stint. Hopefully he can be reliable in middle relief.
-
Murphy said they won’t go to a 6 man rotation. We saw the challenges of a six man rotation almost immediately in Wednesdays night game where we were trying to protect a lead while 3 relievers were unavailable. how do you predict this stretch till the allstar break plays out? 4 days rest for all of the starters with Drohan or Gasser shifting to the pen? We have limited options currently on the 40 man to turn to when we inevitably need a fresh arm over this stretch. McGee is healthy and presumably an option. Koenig is rehabbing and Henderson is set to begin his rehab on 6/28. Do the brewers end up adding a pitcher to the 40 man? If so, who would you predict? (don’t feel the need to read this all out as a question, but if you could just discuss in general what you think the pitching plan looks like during this 18 game in 17 days stretch that would be great!)

Brewers (Gasser) vs Braves (Elder): 6/21/26, 12:35pm
long ball replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Archived Game Threads
I agree. I’m predicting it’s either Rom or Yoho. Whoever pitches the 9th inning might give us a clue. im also not totally sure they wouldn’t stick with a 6 man rotation till the all star break (assuming health). Give Woody the extra rest plus everyone else in our rotation needs their innings managed to an extent. -
I’m not trading Made. Peña maybe in a Skubal trade or for someone signed to below market deal for several more years. (But still probably not for Skubal). I wouldn’t trade Pratt or lara since we’ve already signed them. if a pitcher has already made their mlb debut, I’m probably not trading them. (Henderson, sproat, crow, Drohan). Adamczewski is the only other guy I’ve sorta got a prospect crush on, but the point of him being a LF is a fair point. And if Peña ends up as an OF then there isn’t room for both of them.
