  1. If you were an NFL GM, you would rather have one (late) 3rd round pick in the current year than a 5th in the current year and a guaranteed 1st round pick of unknown position next year? Really? Unless I'm reading that wrong and you mean we should have gotten a 1st next year + a 3rd this year, in which case I would disagree. Saints already gave up way too much.
  2. Seahawks' pick was kind of a shocker.
  3. Shame to waste such a great outing from Chase. We already miss Thames.
  4. Yeah, whatever. Or I'm the guy who's simply watched this team fail to play average defense for 8 years. It's such BS the way you guys are framing my opinions, like I'm some whackadoodle with no basis for saying this stuff. Seriously, who is a star on the Packers, besides Rodgers and probably Adams? There is not a single guy on the roster who qualifies as a "star." The closest one is probably Kenny Clark at this point, honestly, if we're excluding Jimmy Graham. It's like nobody watched what happened when Rodgers got hurt last year. The roster was exposed for the mediocrity that it is. The Packers should have been investing in defense for the last decade, not paying Cobbs and Nelsons $10mm when Rodgers could have had adequate success with league minimum type veterans. The difference between the Packers and Patriots? They do the latter and invest money at impact positions, or get the last ounce of football from other team's throwaways. Ted's "I'm keeping my guys even if it means overpaying" has hurt the Packers dearly. Before someone says it, no I don't expect Patriot-type dominance, but I definitely feel justified saying they should have played in more than one Super Bowl by now. What's really bugging me about the attitude towards what I've said is that I don't think any of it has been that unreasonable. I literally just said Clark and Daniels are championship caliber guys and that Blake Martinez is a keeper as well. But you can keep on being a jerk about it. My personal feeling is that you're letting the Packers' lack of championship success in the Rodgers' era sway your opinion about the roster quality, and if that's the case I think that's understandable to an extent. Here's how I look at it. The Packers went, I believe, 3-7 under Hundley, which would extrapolate to about a 5-11 season. Bad, but not Cleveland Browns bad. But still definitely bad. The missing part of this equation is how much of a disaster we had at QB. Hundley was one of the worst in the NFL. If he had performed as we hoped, it may have not been as bad. A league average QB probably goes 5-5 or so in that stretch. QB play is enormously important, and ours was a disaster. Look at the Texans after Watson went down -- their QB play was as bad as ours, and they went 1-8 without Watson. And the Texans roster besides Watson is not what most would see as a terrible roster. So do I think this roster in the 52 guys besides starting QB is as good as the Vikings or Patriots or Eagles, no I don't. But I don't see them as the disaster you do, either. I'd probably put them right around league average, which obviously goes up tremendously when you add in Rodgers. I also agree that there have been some bad investments. Dropping 8 figures a year on 3 different receivers is just silly, and Bennett was a disaster from the get-go. I also think having over a 5M cap number for a kicker is completely ridiculous.
  5. Ugh, what a night to be stuck at work. One tab for the Brewer game, one tab for the Bucks game, one tab for the draft tracker, and hope for an easy evening...
  6. I expect the defense to be improved just from Capers not running the show anymore. Maybe that's too optimistic but I do expect it. I agree the corner group as assembled isn't very good but House and Williams are fine as bench depth. Free agency still isn't over and there may be some signings post draft. Guys like Dominique Rodgers Cromartie are still out there. I agree Burnett was nothing special and I think his market reflected that. I totally disagree that the team talent stinks and is in need of a rebuild. There are at least 7 guys on defense that are capable of between average to well above average production for their position when fully healthy (Daniels, Clark, Wilkerson, HHCD, Perry, Matthews, Martinez), while the jury is still out on guys like Jones and King. Every team has competent role players like Lowry. I think it was a Capers problem way more than it was a talent problem. We shall see.
  7. That is all fine and dandy if he can prove to repeat it. You would likely have to pay 5 WAR price to get him (so like Yelich-esque price). He could easily dip down to a 3 WAR guy or lower moving forward. Not so special and not a huge improvement for the price over Villar. If he is a 3 WAR guy going forward that should definitely be an improvement over Villar. Some of you are still really high on Villar. I want to buy in, because our best case scenario at 2B is a big internal improvement from Villar. I just don't really see it. I know he's carrying a really nice batting average but everything else stinks. He's pretty much devolved into just a slap hitter with almost no power. That would be fine if he could get on base but he's drawing walks at Hernan Perez levels while still striking out 30% of the time, all the while carrying a very unsustainably high BABIP. Speed is still good but the 60+ SBs was definitely an abberation. I really hope he can have a nice season because that's our best case scenario at 2B like I said. I will say in his defense the defense has seemed plenty passable and I haven't really noticed any baserunning mistakes.
  8. By the way, FWIW, I'm paraphrasing some, but after the game last night, Counsell was asked why he took Chacin out with such a low pitch count, and Counsell said Chacin got him 17 outs, and that's what he is looking at, not the pitch count. So that completely does sound like it's intent and strategy on most nights to get 15-18 outs from our starters and then around 10 from the pen. I would expect that to continue the vast majority of the time unless a starter is absolutely dealing, which wasn't the case last night.
  9. His power isn't an outlier. His rookie season he had 1 HR every 30 PAs and since it has been around 1 per 25 or better.
  10. Hader on pace for 201 strikeouts. NL reliever record is 157 by Brad Lidge in 2004, Brewer record is 126 by Knebel last year.
  11. Pen ERAs: Jeffress: 0.68 Hader: 1.17 Barnes: 1.26 Albers: 1.42 Jennings: 1.50 Williams: 2.45 Drake: 5.91 One of these things is not like the others....:P
  12. Corbin Burnes got completely rocked tonight. I absolutely hate that all our top pitching prospects have to go through Colorado Springs, there's hardly a pitcher alive that can survive it with good numbers. Even Hader couldn't.
  13. Yost bringing back memories with this pen management. He always did like to put his seat belt on after crashing.
  14. Can you imagine if we had just dumped Aguilar for nothing?
  15. Good decision by Villar to get that lead runner. I know Bill S. would have gushed that he made the right decision if he had gone to 1st but you want to preserve the double play chance and keep this game at 4-2.
  16. Get ahead 0-2 to Soler and then not even close on the next 4. C'mon Jacob.
  17. I also think they utilize their pen in a way that should theoretically allow them to eat up more innings than traditional pens over the course of a season. More multi inning outings with more planned days off. Less occasions of unnecessarily getting up and down in the pen. Not that I have anything scientific to back this up with but I would assume that 70 outings of 1 inning is more stressful on the arm than 25 outings of 2 innings and 30 outings of 1 inning.
  18. I'm confident they'll manage the innings just fine. It isn't going to be 7 guys shouldering all those pen innings, they'll also rotate in Lopez, Houser, and whoever of Woodruff and Suter isn't starting. Maybe even Peralta. The 10 day DL may be used to give guys a break at times.
  19. I honestly don't think Counsell cares about a low pitch count, I think it's honestly just team strategy to let the pen take the last 3-4 innings under all but rare circumstances.
  20. Because that's the design of our team. We have an awesome bullpen that is designed to take the last few innings of every game. Whether it works out or not, that is the strategy and has been all year. These early hooks aren't coincidence. We are going to lean heavily on the strength of this team. 7-8 outings by our starters will be very rare just by intent. And Chacin wasn't exactly rolling or nearly as good as his line indicated. Lot of hard contact and got away with some pitches.
  21. What a petty, immature post. I have been wrong about many things and have no problem admitting when I'm wrong. Because I've among many others pointed out that the 2016 deal for Braun would have been a good deal for us, in Braun related threads, that's the same? I said in the first line that the depth was a fantastic thing to have, just that it was mostly circumstantial that we've needed it so much because the injury bug has been especially bad. Nothing more. I wasn't calling out anyone specifically at all as you just did to me. And please don't tell me what to 'ignore' anymore, I am not a child. Guess I should've put one of these ( ) in there because I really wasn't intending it to be a jerk to you, more so having fun with you since you constantly bring it up and it is "see, see" comment. It really isn't a big deal, at all, since we all do it when we think we are right about something. No need for the ruffled feathers fella... cheers. You're right, it's not that big of a deal, I probably overreacted. My bad. I suck at interpreting intent online. Anyway, whether planned or not, I agree the depth is definitely paying off Hopefully we'll be healthier in the 2nd half and won't need as much of it.
