I would guess the Red are looking at the Brewers' pitching and offered up Griffey in conversation. With Hall out, maybe there was a talk about how much salary Cincy would pick up to move Junior.

Well, it's certainly exciting to think about. On one hand, Griffey is a 37 year old with a lengthy injury history. On the other, he still has a great bat, is solid defensively, and has huge marquee value.

 

It was previously thought Griffey didn't like Milwaukee and wouldn't want to come to such a small market. However, he is very close with Prince Fielder, and you have to imagine that the prospect of going to a first place team with a bunch of exciting youngsters on the roster has to be appealing to him.

Cappy and Gwynn for Junior would work for me, provided Cincy picked up some of his salary.

 

Griffey is the perfect type of player to add. We lose some young players but we're not exactly getting a rental. No doubt we would have to pick up his 09 option, but we could develop some young guys like LaPorta or Cain then in a small-time platoon, which would also keep Junior rested.

 

I don't see that adding a big-$ player necessarily means Sheets is gone since we'll have Jenkins and Mench off the books.

Exactly. I get so sick of the "Well, if we pick up this guy, then we won't be able to afford this guy" type of arguments. There are a lot more variables than that, and a lot can change between seasons.

AJAY, all I did was take Griffey and Ben Sheets' headshot and cut the Brewer hat off Sheets and dragged it onto Griffey's head. Then I added some Brewers' coloring to anything that was red on his pic. TCSM, try the link again.

Cincinnati will be receiving outfielder Geoff Jenkins and prospect Tony Gwynn Jr., along with recently acquired minor leaguer Chris Cody in exchange for the 19-year-veteran.

?I am in the state of shock right now,? Jenkins said on the Brewers flagship radio station in Milwaukee. ?This organization has been so good to me. I have been through a lot of losing seasons and have stuck by them.?

Gwynn Jr, 24, has bounced back and forth between Milwaukee and its Triple A affiliate in Nashville most of the season and has shown promise as being a catalyst with a .301 batting average, but has fallen out of favor with fans for low power numbers.

Cody was recently acquired from Detroit in exchange for right-handed pitcher Jose Capellan two weeks ago and was set to begin his stint with Double A Huntsville.

Melvin plans to use Griffey in left field when Hall returns from the 15-day disabled list with an ankle sprain.

Rumor denied: As the summer and pennant races heat up, the Brewers, for the first time in many years, will be in a buyer's mode.

 

General manager Doug Melvin was asked about that but also took some time to deny a report out of Cincinnati that the Brewers were in talks to acquire Reds outfielder Ken Griffey Jr.

 

"I was talking to (Reds general manager) Wayne Krivsky today and then this afternoon I came to the office and went on the Internet and there was something about us getting Ken Griffey," Melvin said. "I just got off the phone a half-hour ago with the Reds' GM and (Griffey's) name was never even mentioned."

Please, people. Everytime GM's talk, it's not about the biggest names on their rosters. The talk show host is a moron.

 

The Brewers have 124 home runs in 88 games. They don't have $20 million to throw around on an area that is not a need.

 

Melvin was in all likelihood inquiring about David Weathers to bolster the bullpen not Griffey.

As I had commented in another thread when only Krivisky was denying the rumor it was meaningless but know that Melvin has weighed in with a cryptic comment like "his name never came up" we can read the tea leaves better. There's nobody quite as sly when it comes to trade talk misdirection as DM. What "his name never came up" means could be is Adam Dunn talk or my favorite interpretation. His name never came up because we were just discussing all the other players to be involved. Doug's a good guy, but taking him at face value during trading season is pretty much like expecting to vote for a clean politician in Chicago.

The Reds were in Arizona just before the All-Star break. That would mean Daron Sutton might be the one who had a chat with Ken Griffey.

 

Daron Sutton also mentioned on ESPN Radio that he was going to be here in Milwaukee during the All-Star break to help his wife pack their stuff to move to Arizona. So it's possible that the blogger's friend might have ran into Daron Sutton while he was in town.

 

I don't know if Griffey is coming or not, but the details of the story seem to fit together and make it somewhat interesting.

My guess is Melvin was talking to the Reds about a deal that would actually address our needs. Aaron Harang fits that bill. The discusions were likely what it would take to upgrade from Vargas to Harang and from Capuano to Harang.

Harang is a good call, though the Reds just signed him through 2011 in the offseason. He's due to make a ton of money in 2009, 2010, and if traded, 14.5 million in 2011.

 

I'm guessing the conversation was probably about David Weathers.

Maybe Ryan Freel... He just came off the DL and with their own ROY manning center, they could conceivably trade their Jack-of-all-trades to us, deepening our bench. Throw in Weathers and the Brewz might even give up Parra.
