If you're inclined to believe Bob Nightengale, a Randy Wolf signing may be "imminent". No word on with which team this imminency is.

You really have to wonder why the Dodgers didn't offer Wolf arbitration. The odds on him accepting after that type of year must have been quite low. Perhaps they were concerned his arb-hearing could give him a 12-15 million dollar paycheck, based on that ERA?

Their owner is going through a divorce. They may not have the money to pay him.

Coupled with the earlier report about Wolf's signing being close, you'd think we'd see some movement on Wolf tonight or tomorrow.

TH's latest, thinks that it would take that 3rd year for the Brewers to get Wolf.

I'm not a fan of going more than 2 years on a pitcher like Wolf, but if it's in the range of 3 years for $25mil, it's certainly a manageable risk for the Brewers. I thought he would get more since teams don't have to give up picks.

The Brewers could backload the deal - $5/10/10 million or something like that - in order to soften this year's blow before we are rid of Suppan's contract. Then, if Wolf bombs, we can continue to have an albatross contract for a couple of more years.

Yeah, it's hard to swallow the price. But what are the options? You can get a Looper-type guy for $5 million. Or maybe a Jon Garland type for $7 million or so. None of these guys are particularly appealing - especially at the price. You can take some flyers on injured or older guys - Smoltz, etc. But that's a big risk. Or go with some young guys - but what young guys? Perhaps we could make a trade or two, but people don't tend to give up young pitching easily. And we'd have to offer something back.

 

Wolf had a very good 2009. Certainly expect some regression, but hopefully, he could keep his ERA sub-4.00 and be a solid #3 type guy.

I'm officially torn on this, it's all going to depend on the contract duration/money. I think that he can be solid, but I'm not sure if he is #2 starter material. He is a better option than Washburn or Davis, but his age and the fact that he is coming off of arguably his career season make me a little nervous.

I agree, but the team can't stand pat. We just don't have the luxury of doing that without throwing in the towel on 2010. And if it is 3/25, you have to figure that 8m per year doesn't get much on the FA pitching market.

Wolf has always had talent not a nibbler by any means. When he has been healthy he has been pretty good. Hopefully he'll be like Al Lieter & not Jeff Suppan. Now if they can land a decent high reward guy Smoltz/Bedard/Duchscherer

Yep, I'm no fan of giving Randy Wolf ~3/25. I'd hate to have Suppan come off the books next year just to be saddled with another bad contract for two more years. If Randy Wolf is our only option, I almost think we're better off standing pat.

I was never overwhelmed by Randy Wolf but he is probably the best we are going to do free agent wise. I hope this isn't where Melvin stops, though, as I would love to see one more option, preferably on a one year deal. Money wise, this isn't the killer the Suppan is. We dumped a lot in salary this offseason and will do so again next offseason with Riske, Hall, Suppan, and possibly Hoffman and Fielder coming off the books as well. Overall, I won't be standing in line to get my playoff tickets quite yet but its certianly a good start.
