Rickie Weeks so far this season

Posted
There are different ways to skin a cat. The approach Weeks has employed earned him a contract that averages over $10 million a year, made him an all-star, the second pick of the draft, and placed him among the top five offensive position players in the NL according to WAR in 2010. There is zero good reason that he should just scrap the way he hits naturally because of a rough patch to start the season.

I'd argue that it was his talent that got him those things. He's enormously talented. He's able to generate tremendous bat speed with a flick of the wrist. Its reminiscent of Aaron and Banks for us old timers. But that's the point. While he's been an All Star once, his talent suggests a perennial All Star. Yes 10 million is nice, but great players get twice that and more these days.

Weeks' struggles continue. Same exact ab's night after night. He works himself into a nice count against Marmol in the 7th, a guy he's had no success against whatsoever. 3-1. Takes a fastball right down the middle for strike 2. Eventually k's looking. (On a ball). He's clearly going up there to walk.

At what point do we question what effect Svuem had on Weeks? He was a mediocre at best hitter before Svuem took over and now after, he's been straight up awful.

wOBA first 4 years...

2005: .328

2006: .344

2007: .365

2008: .334

This year: .275

It took a BABIP of .350 his second year to produce just a meh .344. Walked at a abnormally high rate in Aug and Sep of 07 against a bunch of callups when rosters expanded in Sep. I sure hope we don't have that kinda production for 4 yr 40 mil.

It hurts me inside when I have the same reaction to Rickie coming to the plate as Izturis right now. He looks like Cory Hart in a slump- crappy control of his swing and just flailing at pitches hoping that magic will happen.

I don't think it's a swing/mechanics problem as much as he looks like any hitter does when they're being fooled.

well, he had an MRI last night, so we can look forward to a middle infield of izturis and maysonet and a 100 loss season

Both Green and Conrad's natural position is 2B. We'd see them there before Maysonet.

yeah, but green at 2b means ishikawa or conrad at 1b and then we are basically the nashville lineup + braun, hart, and lucroy

When is the last time even for a day our SS and 2B in the starting lineup was this weak hitting/lack of power?

Thank goodness Rickie isn't out longer. I know it's early, but a long-term injury may have made the Brewers 'sellers' in a month or two.

I'm glad Rickie's ok. Also, missing a game or two is probably the best thing for him right now. Long-term it would've been horrible, but maybe this will help him snap out of his funk. Also, I don't understand why Maysonet is starting at 2B over Conrad or Green. If Roenicke wanted to get Maysonet in there he should've started at SS.

In 1990, Jim Gantner was still recovering from the shredded knee thanks to Marcus Lawton, Billy Spiers was hurt and Sheffield was at 3rd. I remember an opening day Keystone Combo of Kiki Diaz/Billy Bates. That one would be tough to top. A little before my time, but I know that in the early days of the franchise, the 'Little General' Ron Theobald was a regular at 2b and Rick Auerbach was the starter at SS. That was a brutal offensive combo as well.

I turned tonight's game off in the 7th and just went back to check out the box score. Golden Sombrero for Rickie. It's starting to sadden me.

What sucks is he drove a ball about 450 ft but it was foul by perhaps 10 ft. Not suggesting he got unlucky but... damn.

it is crazy how lost he looks at the plate. Bizarre even. I've seen slumps before but this is something else.

Weeks needs an extended hot streak to get to the level McGehee was at last year. Just speculating, but Weeks and Fielder were pretty close. It could be Fielder's presence was a factor in keeping him in the right frame of mind to perform.

This is definitely the downside to long term contracts even if they seem fairly reasonable at the time. It's Bill Hall all over again.

Weeks has a grand total of 20 hits and 23 walks so far this season.

And 48 K's. To repeat, he's fanned more times than he's reached via hit or walk combined. Awful.
